Last time I checked, sodium azide was the "active" ingredient in car airbags. Synthesis is dangerous, and uses hard to obtain ingredients (sodium metal, hydrazoic acid). Shouldn't we be able to go down to the car junkyard, cut open a few airbags, and get ourselves a nice pile of sodium azide? Controlled thermal decomposition could yield quite a bit of powdered sodium, and some nitrogen gas. I think anyone reading this knows what they would do with a pile of powdered sodium My questions for you: How would I go about doing this "safely"? What tools would I need to get at the good stuff? How…

Just started to read my "old" chemistry textbook and it said the following:- "Both protons and neutrons are particles with unit mass, but a proton has one positive charge and a neutron is electrically neutral." Can I just ask what's the meaning of 'Unit Mass' in this context? Thanks.

Hi There, I was wondering if anyone out there can help me. I have just started a business making and selling French macarons. We are having some problems with the consistency of our egg white. Is there an instrument or device that can measure the water content of our egg white? Or perhaps something that can measure the protein content! Also is there an instrument that can measure the viscosity of a liquid? Many Thanks in advance for your help! Frank

I need to do an EEI (Extended experimental investigation) on food chemistry involving either proteins, fats or carbohydrates. Does anyone have any ideas on something I can test? Eg. Is margarine or butter more unsatturated? Does potato chips contain more energy than corn chips? What happens to the pH of milk during different stages of lactation? Does cholesterol-free foods contain cholesterol? We did several small experiments to inspire this, but I got nothing. We did extraction of fats, crystalisation, casein glue, energy in foods, etc I can't think of anything. Just say random stuff, I might get an idea from it! THANKS!

  6. I am looking for a standalone metal container, about 1 foot tall and 1/2 foot at the base for the purpose of melting LiNO3 and KNO3. It should have a heating element and should be able to reach 600°C. Does anyone know where I can find one online?

  9. I have a business opportunity which requires the results of a GC/MS to be successful. It is basically testing medications for their active compound and the potency of the compound. This is legal in the place/country in which I am looking for the type of substance I am planning on testing. All in all there will probably be about 40 different types of substance derivitaves which I will be testing for, most either in a carrier oil with a small amount of solvent or in a powder form with some form of binder. So that is what I would like to do, test the samples customers send in and publish the findings online. I have no experience with GC/MS and I need to know where …

For a project, I am comparing different acidic fruits/drinks to see which one generates the most voltage. I have really no experience in chemistry, at all. I need to create a conceptual framework, and decided that I'd just make it about the factors in batteries that affect how much voltage will be generated. Any help is appreciated. :/ Also, help on the conceptual framework would be nice.

Basically I have a bottle of high concentration 20nm gold nanosphere solution. I want to put the nanospheres on microscope coverslides (fixed), each gold nanosphere has to be spaced out by some distance. After that I have to look at the scattering of the nanospheres in a microscope. Has anyone got any experience in this? All I have found online are staining techniques. And how would you tell a gold nanosphere from much larger dust particles?

This is my old leather boot. It's been sitting undisturbed for at least 5 years in the garden shed, that's how long I've been looking for it, now I've found it. It looks like it's all there, there is no major wearing away of it. But, it has a white substance on it that powders easily when it's scraped off. There isn't very much of it, it's light and floats away in the wind quite quickly. Any ideas what it might be?

I'm going to start out by saying that if you are a terrorist, you probably already know where to get it, and if you don't, a little effort should yield many ideas. Also, terrorists, I agree it was wrong to steal your land, but it wasn't me who did it, it was the American government. It probably won't stop you, but don't kill people who have done nothing to you in their lifetime... Would Allah really want that? Anyways, I'm going to see how many links I can get on this page. Mods THIS IS NOT FOR BOMB MAKING!!! I just want to make some copper nitrate, and test some silver, mkay? Anyways, if you know where to get it, post your link here! I'll start out with mine, it's pretty…

There was just a storm here, and I have access to hundreds, more likely thousands of kilos of wood. Is there any way I could use it to make electricity? No, I don't have a sterling engine. Anyways, should I sell it as firewood and use the money to buy petrol for my car, from which I will get electricity? Or could I make some epic carbon-air fuel cell, if such a thing is possible? Doesn't seem too likely that it is, but you have to assume an idea could potentially work, if not, we wouldn't have a chance of inventing anything new... The wood would probably need pyrolysis for purification if it was... Any ideas people?

I'm brand new to this site, though have lurked somewhat within some interesting existing posts - it's apparent that there's an abundance of knowledge and expertise here, therefore I'm wondering whether any of you guys would be willing to give up a little time to lend me your veritable intellectual clout? I'm in the process of writing a novel with a pivotal character discovering a sustainable energy source, essentially the genre is more thriller/mystery taking other plot developments into consideration but what I do not want to do is (Dan Brown style) create an absolutely ridiculous, infuriating implausible scientific situation - in truth, I'm not much of a …
