Recently, I've been very interested in autoimmune diseases. I don't pretend to be an expert in autoimmune diseases, but I would like to know more of them. Currently I understand that what the bacteria does is prompt the body's immune system to attack itself. I have my own theory, but I can't compare it to convention science's theory, mainly because I don't know what conventional science's theory on autoimmune diseases is. If anyone knows much about autoimmune diseases, I would greatly appreciate the knowledge. I intend to do much work on multiple sclerosis this summer, but I need to do some research in terms of autoimmune diseases in general. Based upon my b…

The question is will I burn more calories by running three miles at my top speed or slowing it down to a light jog assuming that I have to run the three miles. The reason being is I have been told that to gain weight with my body type I should be doing very little cardio at all. Especially considering I won't have any problem passing the run on the PT test anyway. But some people have neglected to do individual PT so we are being forced to run as a squad twice a week rather than go to the gym on our own.

Did animal life begin as herbivorous? And if so, does this mean animal classes generally begin as herbivorous before they can have carnivores and omnivores branching off them? I was thinking about the T-rex nibbling on similar shaped, to itself, herbivores.

Could someone explain to me the nature of bioelectricity? Based on my experience (a goof while repairing a lamp), electricity does not seem “body friendly”. Since organic material is not usually considered a good conductor of electricity, how does bioelectricity conduct itself within the body?

Just wondering, what are people's thoughts on genetic engineering? Do you approve, or disapprove? Do you think it is dangerous, or unhealthy? Vote, and give your opinion on it.

I have an essay question asking me why consumption of lots of coffee, tea, or water while a patient is taking a drug could cause the drug to lose its effectiveness more quickly. Does anyone know? I know it has to do with drugs being excreted in the urine, but I don't understand why increasing the volume of urine would make the drug go through someone's system more quickly. Do the kidneys flush out someone's bloodstream more quickly when there is a higher volume of urine? I'm confused, and I'm not sure if I'm wording my questionn very well.

In-breeding and closely related species, like lions and tigers interbreeding, both these breeding scenarios produce some infertile offspring. What do both have in common that makes infertile offspring more likely? Or what are the things that are likely to be in-common for sterile offspring to be the result? (I’ve transferred this question here from another thread. Was a wee bit awff topic )

After having an education in Zoology, and with my general interest in the natural sciences, I am an ex-creationist. I have a question about evolution. I have heard it said that chimpanzees and humans are closer related to each other than horses and zebras, and to lions and tigers. If this is true, than why is it that the latter two pairs of creatures can interbreed, but humans and chimps can't? Thanks.

I am a college student coming toward the end of my course. My final project I have compared the efficiency of handwash, soap and alcohol gels. Using nutrient agar plates to count the bacteria before, 5 minutes after and an hour after (using each of the products). I have my results, but wondered if anyone else has any useful information for me?

a few questions regarding spiders in general; first of all, how long can they survive without any food? i know they can eat their own protein that they usually use to build webs... more on this would be helpful. secondly, what are some of the insects that spiders in general will tend to avoid eating? also, do they require water and in what amounts?

Apparently the two should be around 99% the same, with reconstituted juice just being dried once and then hydrated again, and yet I find the two have very different tastes. Apart from the taste one other, more important, thing is bothering me; when the bottle states "reconstituted juice 99%" I'm curious what exactly, of the other 1%, could cause an allergic reaction in my mouth which I get from drinking these reconstituted orange juices? Freshly made juice from fruit is by far a better choice for me and I can't seem to find anything similar on the market to buy, as all of the juices I've seen are pretty much 'reconstituted'. I've tasted some trully great juices when I was…

I am curious to know how scientists/organizations go about organizing a research expedition in order to collect environmental samples. ex: samples for natural compound libraries or metagenomics. Specifically, I am interested to know if it is done in house, outsourced, and how difficult it is.

Following an overnight freeze, some plants often die. Some people water the plants thoroughly before and after the freeze. Explain how providing a plant with extra water before and after an overnight freeze could help it survive a freeze.
