  1. The origin of species, the classic book that creates the true modern biology, was nerver introduced to us when we had been studying biology in college (well, in China, at least). Is it too outdated? Or, the so-called modern biologists don't need the old idea any longer? I feel so confused. Could someone here talk about the topic? I think I need more opinions.

I have a question about the occurence of meiosis. I was told meiosis occurs during gametogenesis (formation of gametes such as sperm/ova). And during meiosis 1 - prophase 1 there is crossing over occuring to create more diversity. My question is crossing over of whose chromosomes because we have 2 pairs of every chomorome (not chromatid)??? Each individual has its own set of chromosomes, I can't see how crossing over can occur during the formation of 4 sperm or 1 egg because fertilization has not occured yet. And does meiosis occur during fertilization, if yes the result would be 4 genetically distinct cells in one human being??? If no, then how can there be a genet…

(I'm putting this topic in the Biology forum since I don't have a direct link to a news story and in case the conversation turns general.) There was a news report on ABC tonight that researchers in Japan have created a mouse with two mothers. The report didn't go into detail about how this was done, but it did say that the DNA from one mother was treated to make it look like a male's. (They'd have to do this because genes are expressed differently depending on which parent they come from.) The mouse is now a healthy adult and has had babies "the old-fashioned" way. Reasearchers say this technique can be used to create stem cells for research. So, what do people…

Hey I was curious as to why your throat hurt when you drink ice water while chewing gum? I am looking into doing an experiment on this and would love some information as I cant seem to find any on the internet. Thank you soooo much!

  8. Recently, I have cultured bacterium in a gel medium. I have seen many colonies grow, nearly 1/4 of an inch in diameter. They are of many colors, and in many varieties. I plan to clone two of my "favorite" colonies (the ones that look most interesting), and grow them, and see how they interact. My question to all of you, is, will it be safe to grow these microbes, and open my petri dish, and swab a few colonies. The colonies were collected from outside, on the surfaces of plants, wood, and grass. You opinions and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Do you want to Live Forever? Yes, it's a joke webpage, you've probably heard of it a long time ago, and it's a far fetched Idea, but is it possible? Has anyone read much or know much about the theories of cells dying? The "celular clock" theory has been around, but I dont think it's highly regarded. Is it all about the heart weakening or other things malfunctioning? Why does this happen? just because of cellular breakdown, clogged aurteries, and sudden weakness of the heart muscle? Are there many studies being done, and if so what are the theories? I don't mean is it just possible for this guy's idea to work, but is it actually theoretically possible to live forev…

  10. A few questions: Does anyone know of some good sites for identifying common microbes and bacterium, in their colonies??? Most anything will help:) And, yes, I am aware that there are billions of microbes and bacterium out there. Also, if i were to clone an interesting colony (by swabing the colony, and putting it on a new petri dish,) are there any interesting, and relatively easy experiments that I could do with it (the cloned colony(s)). Yes, I know it is very open ended, but I will be glad to hear all of your ideas, and get data for all of you (for eample, maybe i could clone two colonies. I could introduce one colony to a dish, and wait for it to establi…

Plant cells have rigid cell walls to hold the cells together, how do animal cells hold themselves together. Does it have something to do with the chemical properties (dipoles) of the phospholipid bilayer?

  14. I just found a blond hair about 2 inches long sticking out of my stomach. This is weird. I saw it before and pulled it out. Now it's back. It is like 4 times as long as any other body hair. My hair is naturally black. So this odd, 2 inch blond hair sticking out from my 1 cm black body hair from the stomach is odd. And there's only one of it.

I was wondering what experiments could be potentially harmful to myself: Injecting myself with tap water Injecting lime water into myself Injecting home made Penicillin into myself Drinking a SMALL quantitie of bleach and analysing any burp gas Eating Iron fillings and later taking a blood sample and burp sample. (is FeCl posionous). Injesting small quanties of other bases and testing the burp gas. Performing an exothermic reaction in my stomach Injecting pyruvic/ citric acid or even ATP into myself? (any body know how to make those)?? Injecting Vit C into my self (Know how to make that??)

  20. Okay, this is a bit theoretical but it seemed like the best way to put it. Theoretically, if we could have shielded ourselves COMPLETELY against outside menaces like viruses and deseases, do you think we would be healthy "forever", or would we develop some other sorts of medical problems to "compensate" ? Aren't deseases also a way that natural selection (bad word but... err.. you know what I mean) operates? The question comes because on the "Live Forever?" thread in the forum Cap'n Refsmmat mentioned that we don't live forever MAINLY because of deseases. But maybe it also has to do with evolution and nature? We all know about the "natural selection" of e…

Enzyme kinetics often follow both zero and first order kinetics. Zero order kinetics are followed when the substrate S has saturated the enzyme. First order kinetics are followed when the enzyme is not saturated. Why is this?

Hello there. I have just finished a biological experiment on "effect of trypsin concentration on rate of casein hydrolysis" I have already obtained a graph, and I used a program called "Graphpad Prism" to analyse the data usin nonlinear regression (3rd degree polynomial). I have got all the parameters like sy.x, degrees of freedom... But how do I use these parameters to analyse whether my results are reliable, and by varying enzyme concentration results in an increase in rate? I have also considered Spearman's rank coefficient but this is only for linear relationships. What else can I do to determine whether my results show regression?
