Discussion of science topics that don't fit under any other category.

  1. Any two or three scholarly articles will do. I can't find any for the life of me via google searches. I need articles that measure the results of the test and if it is really effective or not.

  2. is it possible to learn to accept someone the way they are or even like them? I'm struggling to try to learn to accept myself. I want to accept myself but i have to then accept that I'm a horrible person.

  3. Hello everyone, I'm quite close to finish my bachelor in biotechnologies and I'm thinking to do the same master, but the farther I go, the more I understand that I love it, but don't want to spend my whole life working on the bench with chemicals and getting not that exciting salary. I want to relate my life with biotech/science, are there any alternatives for people with science background? Maybe you felt the same way? Please share your experience and thoughts. Thanks in advance

Many scientists believe that et's are likely to exist. Some would say almost certainly exist. Empirically speaking: Either et's exist or they don't so the a priori probability is 0.5 = 50% This just means "we dont know one way or the other". The only empirical evidence that et's exist that I have ever heard anyone claim is that we observe life here on earth therefore et's are likely to exist. By Bayes Theorem: Probability that ets exist given that we observe life on earth = 0.5*probability that we observe life on earth given that et's exist/probability that we observe life on earth 0.5*1/1 = 0.5 The probability is completely unchanged by the…

!!: NOTE: this text might be reformed in 24 hours repeatedly. Dear Scientists; I had sent a letter to NASA far before. and I remember it had been responded very quickly in comparison other associations.(they responded in 20 hours.) I will share their reply as same as reached. (only one difference : my name will be changed with my nickname.) and I see it contains a probability of getting a job there (but of course there will be responsibilty to search, it is clear to understand.) I have not responded this letter yet. but I do not know the real probabilities and when I looked to the links given in their e-mail ,unfortunately it was too wide. I am too busy wi…

  6. Virtually anything any other species does is considered to be natural, part of nature. But for some reason, many humans consider some of the things we're capable of to be unnatural, or "not as nature intended" (we've had some discussion in other threads about this, but not in a thread primarily about it). They claim that by extending our lives through medicine, we're doing something nature didn't intend us to do. Childbirth through C-section is considered unnatural, even though it accounts for almost one birth out of three in the US. We can modify the plants we grow for greater yields, disease resistance, and other benefits, but this practice is now being considered u…

  7. dear estimable scientists ; as expressed at my profile I would publish one of my interdisciplinary article which is an example of new generation of interdisciplines. I am expert of basic analysis and my MSc subject is funtional analysis ,I need references which is generally / mainly relevant to key words : “nationalism” and "racism" I request you to give/write references (articles , please write links) for help ,and you may use the questions below through answer them. -->> if you are historigrapher or chronickler : “could you explain and give your ideas please (especially if you feel expert at this area, what the nationality means , what are the g…

  8. All you need are some balls, some string and a few screw in hooks Grab a ball and put a hole on opposite sides thread a long piece of string through the holes and hold it horizontally. You now have a model of 4D space. The ball represents the entire universe, the string represents time. Add a hook to the 'top' of the ball. Tie a piece of string to the hook and hold it vertically. Slide a few more balls onto this new string. This is a model of 5D. The extra balls represent other universes along the 5th dimensional line Grab 2 more hooks and put them on the 'left' and 'right' side of the first ball Tie some string to the new hooks and extend them horiz…

  9. I have some glass that act as sliding doors that go on my bedroom wood cabinet that I have cleaned to streak free perfection. But I noticed when you breathe on them with your breath causing the surface to fog up while holding the glass in the light, that there are patterns on the surface that seem to always be there & are the same. Like as if there was chemical residue left on the glass. But after a proper clean I can't see why these patterns are there? Is it some kind of static effect from rubbing of microfiber cloth or residue left by my cleaner which is 100% isopropyl alcohol & demineralised water? Or maybe some permanent residue left that needs to be polished…

  10. What is the most likely way for the inheritance feature? (from google translate) In other words what is the type/kind of inheritance that the below image shows? Is it autosomal? Is it X linked? Is it Y linked? Is it cytoplasmic? Is it dominance? Is it recessive? Also what is the probability/chance that the son of couple 1 and 2 will be mutant if (in case that) they are going to be married? I am newbie/novice in genetics and my lecturer/teacher didn't upload solution and/or answer to these two questions on the moodle, so I can't check and know if I solved and answered these two questions correctly or not, and I want to be prepared to pass my test in the next few days.…

(To me) A hidden motive seems very apparent in certain leagues of modern science, propagating dependence on digital things, and ultimately total dependence on science; rather than relying on tried and true, guts of solid, organic stuff, like clocks and watches with physical hands. Why? Because watches with hands suggest such things as raw trades, and the notion that people can tell time with total independence, by the heavens and by our own stature. Your shadow, for example, tells perfect time, to the wise, more perfect than any digital device. Mind you, my minor in college was computer science, and I'm still very active developing web-apps, so I'm not at all a tec…

  12. The basis of learning everything mathematical and scientific being the number one, always learned by trusting someone (faith), the next being the number two, learned again by faith, at what point should a person discard faith? The best answer, that I think I can fairly project, is that a source should be discarded, as far as being trustworthy, when it fails "to work." I would ask then, are there ever any instances (and I think this can be fairly tested either by informal, or by formal observations) of Biblical faith, specifically, being both practical, and enriching in ways similar to or exceeding music, for example, for a person or for a group of persons? If the…

  13. How did humans discover the use of metals? I don't know but let's see if we can make sense out the clues discovered so far. Stone knives and spears gradually turned into metal knives and metal spear heads. I look around our lives and metals seem to be the thing that has made the biggest difference between us and the rest of the animal kingdom. How did this start?

  15. Hi, everyone! From time to time I wish to have the following program: I upload the pdf of the article into it, it automatically parses the references and builds the graph of citations. In addition to that, it allows to make notes and comments inside the article. Does someone know systems of that kind? I know that google scholar gives you your personal library, but it's just the system of saving links. Mendeley does everything what I need but without showing references between articles (and without building graph of references). I would be very happy, if you will suggest something. Thanks, Marat.

So this crazy idea just popped in my mind. What if we could record anything that we think of in the moment we think about it. For example you come up with an idea for a song and this draft of a song is recorded for you in some storage unit. I'd like to know how possible could this be.

Science uses one basis of judgment--information deemed as evidence by a single method, science (self). This proposition is quite dangerous. Science essentially puts all of your eggs in one basket.

  18. Sorry, I just could not get the Quick Question Thread to work. Anyway, my point is, I know they can tell when the pressure is different because thats how they know about storms coming early. But if one spot has an abnormally high or low area, can they tell? I also wouldn't mind the science behind how they know. Thanks!

I'm asking for a measure, in your subjective opinion: on a scale from 1 to 10, 1 being "steely cold but strongly unified", 10 being "warm with plenty of room for dissent," how would you describe the scientific community?

  20. I'm a Fashion Design student at Liberty University whose also on the speech team at my university. Last year, I gave an informative speech for competitions about using Kombucha SCOBY along with various ingredients such as tea, sugar, and water (Symbiotic Colonies of Bacteria & Yeast) to create a leather-like material that can revolutionize the fashion industry. Not much research has been done about this process and I was hoping to learn more about it. Throughout the project, I would experiment with the process. For instance, I'd switch the medium (black tea, white tea, green tea, coffee, etc.) to see how the process would be different. This project would give me …

  21. Started by ajb,

I was made aware of a project in pure mathematics that is asking the public for money via 'crowdfunding'. As the people involved are not looking '... to cure cancer' or '...build new IT equipment' or '... to contribute significanlty to the local economy', their funding options are rather limited. The fact they are asking for money in this way shows how difficult getting funding for pure mathematics and fundamental science can be. There seems to be a drive for short term economic gains from research, and this short sighted and not good for science. Asking openly for money is somthing I have considered, but not that seriously...yet. Personally, I am not sure …

  22. Hello everyone. New to the board here, and I was hoping someone would be able to give me a hand in developing some of the background information for a science fiction property I am developing. While the information I need isn't strictly relevant to the plot of the story, I want to lay as realistic of a backdrop as possible. This is the basic information: It is 100-200 years into the future. We have developed faster than light travel to the degree that it's possible to travel ~100 light years in 6 months' time. The major space agencies of the Earth have been combined into a single central agency. This agency has spent decades building and proving a line of 15 …

  23. I'm new to microbiology and am wondering how I can start to test the lifespan of yeast in as crude a way as possible. Any help would be appreciated. I don't know where to begin. I basically just have a microscope. It appears a lot of people talk about testing, but it is very difficult finding information on how to test without expensive equipment, a micro manipulator or some device to check light diffraction.

  24. Although not always the case , I am sure it could be shown that many of the foundation scientific theories , certainly , by the known names, Originated with an Observation. Perhaps blowing water into the sunlight and seeing a spectrum of colours. Perhaps seeing lamps in a vaulted roof swinging all with the same regularity. Many scientists went on to develop these Observations with postulations , experiments, tests, mathamatical models , conclusions ,Theories and Hypothesis and their publication resulted in much of the science we have today . The observations often seemed , meaningless to many at the time , but individuals often braved harsh criticism , only to d…
