I read on the internet the 10,000 hour rule to be expert on some thing normally they use examples of playing chess, baseball, basketball, swimming or martial arts so on the 10,000 hour rule. So I did the math of 10 year period is 1,000 hours per year and that is 2.7 hours a day. When you look at other areas of study it is normally to be medical doctor, phd in physics or phd in philosophy or phd in economics or phd in biology is normally 10 hours a day of studying that is 3,650 hours of studying in one year and in 10 years that is 36,500 hours. As it normally takes 10 years to get phd in physics, philosophy, sociology, psychology, economics, biology or medical doctor.…

The 2005 Ig Nobel prizes were awarded on th 6th of October in a ceremony at Harvard University. There were some pure gold winners, my favorite was for Literature. The Internet entrepreneurs of Nigeria, for creating and then using e-mail to distribute a bold series of short stories, thus introducing millions of readers to a cast of rich characters -- General Sani Abacha, Mrs. Mariam Sanni Abacha, Barrister Jon A Mbeki Esq., and others -- each of whom requires just a small amount of expense money so as to obtain access to the great wealth to which they are entitled and which they would like to share with the kind person who assists them. There were a few Australian …

Hiya! I'm writing a term paper on "Revolutionary Road", a novel by Richard Yates. It mainly deals with the American Spirit and the question whether it still exists or not. Now I'd really like to know what you think... I'm from Germany so I can't really tell if there is an American spirit today. Do you think there is? What I'm talking of is a unifying spirit, a spirit that makes you feel American. It may be about rebelling against the government (that's what it used to be like during the Revolutionary War) but it may have changed, of course... Please let me know what you think! I'd really like my final conclusion to be based on your opinions! Thanks a lot! =) …

I was just wondering if anybody could direct me to the best scientific websites? Like what are the best websites for microbiology, biology, physics, mathematics, and so no? Specifically I was wanting to view websites that actually teach a person about a subject.

This movie was made (1963) long before computers were involved in movie making. How did Hitchcock get the birds to do what they did in the movie?

I already knew about non verbal cues forming a greater part of communication amongst people than verbal communication. Body language for business However, I was surprised to find out that shoulder body language is also revealing. For example it can reveal mood, leadership potential, or even the extent to which someone may be telling the truth. This surprised me. Any thoughts? Link

As part of my work, I am looking into possible future discoveries/advancements which may prove pivotal in the near future of mankind. To this end I would appreciate any ( and I mean any) ideas or guesses, any of you have, about the changing face of science in the next 100 years. This could include the discoveries/advancements themselves, their political, economic or social influence or anything else which could be considered a landmark in human development. All responses, no matter how humble, would be gratefully received.

In part, corporations, rich and governments contribute to world poverty. Let's see how. The corporations need to achieve goals. For this, there are dismissals, low wages and high profits. The rich have no obligation, but they could help the poor. Governments are permissive in the name of tax. In Paris Macron appeals to governments and corporations for the climate. They should make a meeting to reduce poverty on the planet.

Free will is something people have believed in for thousands of years. Yet now in the modern day world with all of our physics I am starting to think if its even physically possible. Any thoughts? also i wont to bring this up. i know the answer i just want to see if anyone else picks up. there is a red ball and a blue ball on the table and a machine on the table. the machine can take the information of the gazillions of atoms around it to predict their movements. this includes your brain. the machine says you will pick the red ball. after seeing this you choose the blue ball. The machine is not wrong. How does this work?

Time and time again, people on here seem to completely ill define science, especially recently, and it's getting really boring and a waste of time for others trying to explain it. Is there any chance of a sticky or something that defines science precisely, no blurring with philisophical or religious arguments, no discrediting of science because a theory is incomplete (groan...I hate that one) just a concise, and solid definition, so for anybody that can't seem to understand what science actually is, can be given a link, and hopefully it will stop people rubbishing science because they can't define it correctly. If there already is one, apologies, I couldn't find…

Can anyone explain to me what the difference between these two is? Everything that I've read provides these vague differences that may or may not be true for all idioms or phrasal lexemes, I've not been able to find a clear answer.

Hi all. Television is bombarding advertisements for the sale of Viagra pills at $0.87 each. If it is to be believed; how sales of something that was ~$40 each is now paying for expensive commercials and still making a profit in the era of inflation ? If production of the chemical was $0.01 each pill, and the chain of sales takes the typical ten times every stage of handling it; how can be advertised at more intensity than the sales of automobiles with a $50k sticker each ?

Member Danny6777 made a post in general discussion asking why Jews were making acheivements in science. The thread was rapidly closed (I believe this was because there were anti-semetic insinuations). Despite this, he said something interesting that prompted me to think about the relationship between the social, political and economic power of various nations or groups and their scientific acheivements. Even though that thread was closed, I thought I'd start a discussion about that here. This is an excellent example of how social political factors play a role in science. Scientific acheivement often coincides with political or economic strength o…

The number of tropical cyclones in categories 4 and 5 (the highest two categories) has steadily increased over the last thirty years, the number per five year period doubling in that time. The number of storms and their duration also increased, but I personally didn't find these data as convincing. Whether this is linked to increasing global temperatures is a matter of speculation, and it may be part of a longer term oscillation. In any event, it looks the like the End Is Nigh placard business is set for some solid growth. Number of cats owned owned by crazy old ladies as compared to windspeed, plotted over a thirty year period. Note that while windspeed has remained f…

I just did a bit of thinking, and came up with something: with today's technology, you could theoretically create a (less capable) version of the Enterprise. Here is how it would work: Propulsion: I know that with today's technology, you really can't make warp drive or whatever. But part of it is possible. You have several fission reactors powering the ship. These also power giant electromagnets which suck up all the atoms floating around in space. These are heated up and blasted out the back, like a rocket. Some of the gases could be used for maneuvering, also. You could get to maybe half light speed in a year or so, but you really wouldn't have the ability to do…
