What's going on in the world and how it relates to science.

  3. Last month, the US prez claimed China would be the first to buckle when it came to his trade war gambit: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-04-08/trump-vows-that-china-will-take-down-its-trade-barriers Now he's lifting the trade ban on ZTE so he can help fasttrack this Chinese company's recovery: http://www.businessinsider.com/ap-trump-tells-commerce-department-to-help-chinese-company-2018-5. Is this the great negotiator in action? ZTE buys a lot of US parts but they broke the law and were only a month into a multi-year ban. Is this commercial diplomacy, or weasel ethics, or investment opportunism, or what?

According to some info that flashed through some non-western media (please don't ask to specify) China destroyed two US interceptors somewhere over Pacific in the last few weeks. It happened right after Huawei director arrest in Canada. If this is true, strange that US media keeps silence on that.

When I was young, at home I was faced with the attitude “ You do as I say or get the hell out!” Not every job was like that, but a lot were. My favorite job was serious about work, but worked with problems without a lot of regard to the problem and how ridiculous it sounded. Basically it was you wanna keep your job show up tomorrow on time if the problem was an argument borne of frustration. Then the company was bought by a corporation. Everything changed... we weren’t in Kansas anymore. Then came the crash, the burst bubble, whatever you want to call it, then the lay-offs... So, when the last job ( literally ) was, after seemingly forever, landed I was not over…

My question that I want to see based on simple observation to see how many besides I thought this. But is North Korea and South Korea actually separated by reality in a psychological standard rather than one of physicality, or are they working as one with a barrier for play? My reasoning for this question is because through simple observation I’ve noticed oddities between the two that don’t add up. They say they hate each other right? Then why is it when the defector OH was running. One. Koreans are better marksman, two. If you watch the footage alone and look closely. They are missing purposely. It’s like those movies where setups take place. They had to hit the guy to m…

  11. The ongoing case with Huawei''s chief financial officer allegedly subverting sanctions to Iran is what prompted this question. This also spins off to the EU finding ways to keep Iran supplying oil outside the US financial system and contravening its sanctions. My own opinion on the matter is that I hope the present US administration utterly fails with this policy towards Iran. What's your thoughts on the wider question in my title?

Neil DeGrasse Tyson has been accused of sex misconduct by 3 women . Tyson denies any wrong doing. I personally find Tyson's response troubling. In a social media post captioned with a photo of 2 faceless figures pointing at each other Tyson wrote of the damage which can be done to a reputation when one is accused, referenced the need for evidence, and questioned why anyone would believe him. Tyson is a very intelligent person. I think the image he used purposely invokes the spirit of he said vs she said to imply the whole situation is a nonstarter of sorts. Tyson further diminished his accusers voices by talking about the need for evidence. Then ends the post with wh…

Since 2015 their have been 10,000- 50,000 killed and over 3 million people displace as a result of the war in Yemen. The war isn't getting much news here in the U.S. yet the U.S. has been involved providing Saudi Arabia with munitions and intelligence. 1 - Why isn't Yemen receiving more attention? 2 - Does the U.S. have an obligation to take in more Yemen refugees since we are participating in the war which is displacing them? 3 - What needs to happen to end the war?

  14. Problem The state has a need for regular replenishment of its own budget. And this is the only reason why there is a tax system. Only the maintenance of which costs the state huge sums, despite the fact that it does not fulfill its function even by half. And with the arrival of digital anonymous currencies, the collapse of the tax system is inevitable. No one will pay taxes voluntarily. (Already today, tax control does not occur through income as it was mortgaged, but through expenses. And what will happen next?) The outdated tax system has many problems that cannot be solved even theoretically. Decision Today, when the process of issuing money can be…

Instead of voter fraud, which is pretty much an allegation without evidence, there is now growing suspicion that in North Carolina, district 9 there may have been incidences of electoral fraud. That is an allegation that has to be taken more seriously as the damage to the voting process is much higher than individual cases of fraud.

I found the "Pulling off a Nixon" comment interesting-- in how our minds rewrite history based on our conceived notions. Nixon did not extend the war-- see below (from history). Nixon was sworn in as President in January 1969 for his first term-- He immediately started reducing US involvement in the war. I was in the military at the time and was very happy to know I was unlikely to be sent to Vietnam. During Nixon's term as Vice President he spent time on missions to China. He understood that the Vietnam war was a bad idea. He lost his office for good reasons-- the the war was not one of them. The withdrawal was almost complete by the time of the 1972 election. …

Even as a liberal I was impressed by Steve Bannon's speech recently at the Oxford Union (published November 16th, 2018). He clearly has a formidable analytical mind and a deep and comprehensive knowledge of history, economics, and geopolitics. Really interesting to listen to and ponder. This was Trump's lynchpin, the man who won him the election. The man who we were all told is a racist monster, and yet he clearly seems to be looking at the world through an objective, logical lens. If you saw the talk, what were your thoughts on it?

  19. We’ve now weaponized more than just xenophobic rhetoric. Migrants were tear gassed yesterday for approaching the US to request asylum (one threw a rock). The canisters were shot into the crowd and landing beside (sometimes even striking) kids less than 5, even those with no intention of crossing illegally Disappointing, saddening, and infuriating, yet unsurprising. Long term effects? Is US/Mexico border the new Israel/Palestine? Will we ever get passed the damage this is doing to our reputation and credibility?

Does anyone know how anyone can vote twice? I have always voted by mail, here in California. No way I could vote twice. BTW, why do many people need to stand in line for hours to vote? Something is wrong with their state. Anyhow, what is it like to vote at the poll? Do you prove your identity, then they look up your name on a list and check you off the list when you vote? Then how can you vote twice, if your name is already checked? Trump claims that people vote then go out to their car and change their appearance and then go into the poll and vote again. Then the dems just say that is ridiculous, but don't explain how it is not possible to vote more than on…

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will run a test next week for a Presidential Alert which gives POTUS the ability to directly send messages to nearly all cell phones nationally via the Emergency Alert System. Under current law the wireless emergency alert system can only be used for natural disasters, acts of terrorism, or other man-made disasters or threats to public safety. Is this a good idea? Should the President have the ability to send emergency alerts out directly? I personally do not see the use. This is what we have emergency response agencies for. I do not understand how a Presidential Alert is an improvement. I also am concerned about the po…

Please help me advocate for this cause by signing the petition on We the People at https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/most-underrepresented-group-white-house-youth. 25. So, if a woman rapes an underage male and she becomes pregnant, she legally has the right to sue the kid for child support. Same as raping a male, but that's basically unheard of, more often it being a young boy. What is the reasoning for this? Do you guys agree with this? Maybe I'm a bigot but that seems stupid to me. So someone justify this to me. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermesmann_v._Seyer I know it's wikipedia, but the sources do match up and this basically sums it up. The court legally ruled that a woman can sue the father for child support regardless of whether it was due to illegal crime. Also, might I point out they can sue sperm donors, even…
