  1. Started by INBIOSA,

Dear all, I wouldlike to present to you INBIOSA Project. The INBIOSA initiative is based on a profoundly newunderstanding of the role of biology in natural and engineering sciences. Ourdriving argument is that living systems have fundamentally different notions ofself-organization from those in engineering sciences today. Therefore, INBIOSAprepares a new research program to investigate the biological imperatives ofcomputation in a profoundly new way. This will be based on understanding thepremises for and the fundamental characteristics of emergence, organization, development and evolution in biology. Our goal isto develop a set of nov…

What are some good youtube channels that deal with science? I'm looking for either science news or explanations of things in science or discussions. I don't want sort of trivia type explanations like "why does a pan show rainbow colors after washing."

As you know, a large paper clip weighs approximately one gram, give or take a few milligrams to accommodate the fact that each paper clip is different. Is there a similar common, around-the-house object that I can hold in my hand to get an idea of how much a single ounce weighs?

  5. With the exceptions of occasional crackpots, the selfish, the unkind, and the uncouth; and on rare occasions, the sheer lunatics that come and go, most of the members of this community are giving me an enormously valuable environment to exchange ideas. Teaching has been a great pleasure for me for many years. Now, for the first time, I'm tutoring a boy that suffers from Asperger's syndrome. After a month now, I must say that it's been one of the most gratifying teaching experiences I've had so far. Things are going pretty well, good results keep coming, and everyone involved seems to be happy. We've started with maths. Every time he shouts “now I understand it!” is pr…

  7. I do not refer to dual programs in which we end up with an engineering degree followed by a post graduate degree. Can we do them separately, like B.E. Mechanical Engineering followed by MS in Physics ? Do Universities like MIT, Caltech accept people with a degree in engineering into their Postgraduate Pure Science programs?

Hey guys, I'm trying to decide between getting my PhD or my MS/MBA cause I really don't wanna try to get both (or I guess this is always an option). I'm going to tell you everything about me and what are my life goals. I have a 3.9 (I had straight A's but then get one D, do you think they'll forgive the D?) GPA in mechanical engineering with a minor in applied math and I'm graduating in 3 years with this being my last year. My plan was either to get my PhD (through a BS-PhD program) straight from here at my school NJIT, or get my masters and MBA. Preferably an MBA at a very good school, such as an Ivy League school. I have a lot of goals in my life and interests w…

OK, I feel confident I know the answer to this, but my colleague refuses to accept my explanation. It's silly since the answer to this is not all that relevant, but as a teacher, I want to be sure I am not teaching concepts that are technically incorrect... That being said, I believe water vapor & steam (steam is a common type of vapor, right?) are totally invisible. The argument/common misconception is that you can see steam in the form of the little white cloud rising above a tea kettle or steam vacuum. It is my understanding though, that the little white cloud is just that... a cloud. And a cloud is water in liquid form that is coming together & condensing,…

  10. I originally wanted to be a full-scale doctor, but eventually, other life plans began to creep in (that, and I loathe the thought of being up to my shoulders in debt). Additionally, as someone who's spent most of his life hovering precariously above the poverty line, with terrifying dips deep into the realm of Being Really Really Poor, I am disgusted with the high cost of medicine these days. Despite that, I still want to join the medical field. A year or two ago, in reading up on the topic, I hit upon this wonderful idea called 'becoming a physician's assistant'. People like them. They can ask a PA questions they'd be afraid to ask a full doctor. The demand for physi…

  13. I'm graduation highschool, got into the University of Washington, and I want to study Mechanical Engineering. Everyone told me it's hella hard, and I'm afraid I would not make it and drop out (because a lot of people are). I'm taking a hardcore physics class (called AP Physics C). It's physics with Calculus, and I'm beasting that class with an easy "A" and no studying/doing the homework at all (because I don't feel like it, I'm a senior you know, just want to chill). I'm pro at thinking and problem solving, but I suck at math. I'm not even in a legit Calculus class, I'm doing some bullcrap Intro to Calc class, so I'm just studying math on my own/in the class. If anyo…

I am looking around for graduate programs to plan my Master's / PhD. My interest is space research, and I'm still getting my bearings in it. I'm thinking exoplanetary research is really interesting, but so is radio astronomy and/or instrument design. What I noticed, however, is that schools offer two types of degrees in general: Astronomy and Astrophysics. It seems to me that astrophysics is "categorized" under "Physics" while astronomy is its own category. When I asked some professors about the difference, it struck me that the answer depends on their orientation. Physicists tended to lower the value of the astronomy degree(s) and astronomers told me the differe…

Ok next year I hope to be attending college, it seems as though alot of people on this forum are already in college, so i was hoping for some advice. I am pretty limited on my college options considering im poor, and my class rank is embarassing low:-( I'm probably gonna end up going to Columbus State University in Georgia, then hopefully get enough money to transfer to the University of Georgia. I have always wanted to be a scientist, and science and math are by far my best subjects. I am looking for a good program in Neuroscience, I noticed a few people in here going that route, and would be interested in hearing about that. Is it as fun as you thought it was go…

  16. I think my earliest dabblings in science came from my fascination with space and flight. My parents bought me a book on the solar system when I was quite young, and this sparked my interest in astronomy. I was big into astronomy for years, but during my highschool years I started reading about the physics of the universe. My junior year(4 years ago) I picked up a copy of "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene, and this really interested me. In college my interests turned to biology and medicine, my future career (anyone know how to properly clean telescope mirrors without damaging them? I'd like to use the scope again, but the mirror is horrendously dusty) Pictur…

Hello! I'm a 14 year old with a huge interest in physics. At my current age we aren't really learning much about physics at school, but I really want to get into it. I'm pretty beginner with physics as I've never really learnt it, but as I said, I want to change this. I want to learn physics in a way that I could approach astrophysics later on as primarily, space is my big interest. I am prepared to buy books as at school, I have long lunchtimes and break times which I could use as an opportunity to read, learn more and at the same time, makes things more fun for myself. I consider myself fairly literate so I'm not too fussed about the level of English knowledge involv…

I am an 11th class student from India . I want to get some information about getting into MIT (Massachusetts institute of technology). Are admission criteria for international students different (Is it tougher, than for the US students) ? Presently, I am preparing for Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE) which is the toughest exam in India, and one of the toughest in the World. What I am doubtful about is that being an international student applicant, are my chances to get into MIT less (also I can't get there without being offered at least 85% scholarship) ? As compared to SAT, the IIT-JEE questions level are very, very tough. Even a st…

Hello, I am a new poster. Like several other posts I have seen on here, I am a current social science major that is in the process of switching to a "hard" science. Unfortunately, I am a senior and just figured out what my passion is. I am new to the sciences so please forgive me for not knowing the exact specifics of what I want to study. I do know what I am interested in and want to study. That leads me to my question. I am interested in genetic engineering. I would like to learn about manipulating DNA and engineering existing DNA. Cloning is also interesting. What degree would best suit me to pursue? I have read a lot online but get general answers. I have narrowed…

  20. Hello everyone, I'm heading to college this upcoming fall and I desire to do research. However, I don't know how to go about getting a position. If any of you have done freshman research, I have a few questions: 1. Did you find a professor to research with before or after you started classes? Or were you offered an opportunity to research on your own? 2. Did you have prior lab work experience (I've taken AP/IB Biology and AP Chemistry, I'm just assuming that isn't considered experience)? If you did, how did you receive it? 3. Are there any books about lab work that I should read before school starts? Any books on scientific thought I should read? I …

  21. This has been bothering me for quite somtime I suffered brain damage as a result of blunt force trauma. I have an old school doctor who say's don't worry about it it's permanent etc. But still it bothers me significantly. Mostly memory is impaired, for awhile I woke up everyday not remembering the last, that part has corrected itself. I would just like to know where I stand now compared to the average. An unusual part of the MRI showed that I have an abnormally large (insert medical term here) "bridge" that connects the 2 halves of the brain. So maybe that'll help me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  23. I think many of the students are not passionate about the real joy of learning science, they more want to learn science just for the sake of completing the homework or just for the sake of getting good grades in exams and are not interested in the research process of science. If you were part of an advisory committee to advice your government or the education minister how would you make students to get more attracted to science?

If I'm not mistaken, the seasons of the year exist due to Earth's translation around the Sun, and how close our planet is from it during this oval-shaped route the Earth "draws" during It's course. (therefore causing temperature and weather variations) Now, I'm curious. Day and Night happen due to Earth's rotations around It's own axis, therefore causing certain locations of our planet to be "shadowed", while others receive the Sun's light. In certain seasons it becomes dark faster than in others, while the time at which the sun rises and the environment becomes bright again, seems to remain the same despite season. I wake up more less about the time the sky beco…

  25. I'm getting older, and an opportunity to return to school has presented itself. But I'm worried that my math and science skills aren't up to par. I did very well in high school, but it's been a long time. I've forgotten basic things—very basic things; so basic it's embarrassing. After briefly researching these things online, I began picking them up again fairly quickly and it's like I never forgot them at all. But I still need some help. Can you guys recommend any websites or books that offer a crash course refresher in mathematics? Science? I just need to get to freshman level - I'll have to take precalculus/calculus, as well as biology and chemistry, and I don't wa…
