A short time ago someone posted about writing stories about science issues, I am no where near a writer but it made me think about what i would write about if I was, I thought how interesting the elements are and the stories you could if elements where living entities. This is a very basic idea at moment, But thought it would make a good idea for childrens book, I thought about creating a world where all the elements live, With their own day to day problems, With stories that can come as the result of elements living in a world similar to "mister men", Perhaps with issues where two different elements who are attracted to each other but are not allowed to be together"s…

Ive graduated a bachelor degree in chemistry from an ordinary university in Turkey in 2012. So i live in a city which has low chemical company portfolio. But I can go another big cities which are higher chemical company profiles and job opportunities and so on. And I did some job interviews on chemical companies that they are in polymer, water treatment station, pharmaceutical, mining and also painting. But nowhere called me after that. I did as best as I can in these interviews. Only i couldnt answer to questions about chemical structure and some chemical equipments.I think that doesnt matter. So , whats the wrong about me? Why they wont call me again? and to say "yes, …

Hello So this is my first post here. I'm not the most scientifically literate person, (I've only done IB Physics HL, and that too I scored a 4). I have an idea that I'm trying to write a book around. THIS WILL CLEARLY BE PRESENTED AS A WORK OF FICTION, AND WILL NO WAY MAKE PSEUDOSCIENTIFIC CLAIMS TO BACK UP ANY RELIGIONS ETC. Basically, I'm considering writing a work of fiction basically inspired by Hairy Ball theorem and the Hairy Doughnut theorem. Essentially, they will be used as "symbols" in the artwork to represent daoism-inspired concepts of balance, flow and resistance. AND I will also explore the concepts of "chakras" with them. (and possibl…

This video is not about the music although I do like it, I have found it to be one of the most visually stunning film I have ever seen. I think many will agree this is a masterpiece of filming There is a "What are you listenning to" thread in the Lounge, but I think it would be nice if anyone sees nice film, editing, special Effects, or just about any cute visuals they could follow here. A Thread for beauty in films or videos, or even recommendations for it in case it is in theaters.

It seems to me that conversion to green energy and cleaner engines have a chance to limit climate change to 3C. The linear alternator engine might be put to use in new cars within a couple of years, and that the potential efficiency increase for automobiles should be a huge; about like taking 15% of cars off the road if all cars were converted. Moreover, with 3D printers, a good small business in the near future might be to replace engines in old cars with linear alternator engines and electric motors. Cars with thin kind of engine also made from light weight materials should make 100+ mpg automobiles common. Texas recently decided that wind+solar and 3 coal plants wo…

Just thought I would share this picture of mammatus clouds I just came across, I have never seen these clouds, and thought how strange and beautiful, Reminds me of cell division, Mammatus, also known as mammatocumulus, is a meteorological term applied to a cellular pattern of pouches hanging underneath the base of a cloud. The name mammatus is derived from the Latin mamma. wikipedia More of these amazing clouds https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Mammatus+clouds&safe=off&es_sm=93&tbm=isch&img…

Hi guys Those who know me a bit, also know that tuesday (previous week), I had to take my entrance exam in order to be allowed to follow medicine in a Flemish university. Today, I got the result. Knowledge and Insight in Sciences (KIS) (10 questions of each science) (a correction for guessing is implied; also, some of the questions were deleted because they wouldn't have been 100% correct; otherwise my result would've been a bit better): -Mathematics: 2,04/5 -Chemistry: 2,41/5 -Biology: 2,71/5 -Physics: 4,26/5 ----------------------- TOTAL: 11,4/20 Acquiring and Processing Information (API) (exists out of 30 questions on communication between phys…

Well first of all let me say that what I'm about to ask you might be ridiculous and if you feel to bash me go ahead and do it ... So I'm not a scientist or anything close to it, I've just signed to this forum to ask simple question hopefully to get your guys opinion. So since I can remember one of my biggest dreams was to somehow live in the universe where my "super-heroes" from TV showed lived, like living in a TV show universe. Well why would you want it ? Well I don't know, it's a dream and I'm allowed to dream so I dream big, and yea I know it's sounds insane and like a fairy tail but I wanted to ask you guys if you think one day something like this would be i…

Belated holiday greetings to all our American cousins. (Why do I get strange looks when I mention that July 4th marks British Thanksgiving?) What is the next big holiday celebration where you live?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-27926348 Harley-Davidson invites public to test electric motorbike Seeing the speed that electric bikes can get round the mountain course (link below) - and how drop dead gorgeous that one above looks; maybe there is a new age dawning for bikers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TT_Zero#2014_TT_Zero_Race Still 14-15 mph lower than a Superbike - but averaging 117mph around such a hairy circuit is pretty damn fast

I know you was used when addressing social superiors and thou to inferiors (generally speaking), but I'm wondering if anyone knows when this social distinction appeared? I know the actual forms you and thou existed by the Middle English period, but I'm wondering whether this social distinction applied then or whether it only came up in Early Modern English.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to let you all know that next tuesday, I'm going to take my entrance exam for med school. On the next few lines, there's a bit of explanation about the exam. Be smart and skip this boring part. --- In the morning (9.30 a.m.), the scientifical part begins and lasts until 1.00 p.m. It consists of 4 sciences: physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics, with 10 questions each. Then we have one and a half hour lunch break, and then the somewhat more useless (but quite difficult) part begins: first of all a communication test (we get a casus and have to pick a 'right' answer (empathy is the key here)) and then we get 6 texts of about 2 pages e…

I've been looking over the job descriptions and eligibility requirements for Medical Laboratory Technicians and Medical Laboratory Scientists: http://www.ascp.org/certification One of the things I've been questioning is if these jobs are for the students who did not do too well in their college and university programs. There does not appear to be a GPA requirement. There may be GPA requirements to get into various programs, such as a 2.0/4.0 GPA. This website discusses people who get a 3.0/4.0 GPA having their GPA heavily weight for admission to the program. It looks like the Medical Laboratory Technicians get paid around $35,000 USD and that Medical Laboratory Scient…

The Football World Cup in Brasil is about to start. Are you gonna watch it, or can't you wait for it to be over so we can all resume normal life again? Are you gonna dress up in your own (or someone else's) national colours to support the team? Watch at home or in the pub? And who's gonna win it? I will definitely see the Dutch play, and I will go to the pub to see it. I have some old orange shirt which I will wear. I do go see the match in the pub only when the Dutch play at a major tournament (European or World Cup). I don't think the Dutch will get very far, since we meet the reigning World champions in the 1st match. The most sensible guess is that Brasil will wi…

I've been applying to jobs that require a bachelor's degree. I had an interview yesterday with a chemical company. The interview left me thinking that it was a bench monkey job that would become quite boring after a while. However, I don't have a problem with a boring job that would pay well: $30,000 to $35,000 USD / year. Seeing as I only have my B.S. in Neuroscience. Of the things that I have been wondering after the interview are questions like this: 1) If I get into industry with my degree, after a few years (perhaps 3+ years), would I increasingly become stuck in industry jobs? 2) If I take the industry route, would someone eventually extend an offer to me to ge…

I've finished watching one of the most beautiful science documentaries I've seen so far, Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey. Its author and host, Neil deGrasse Tyson, who I read is an astrophysicist himself, discussed about a lot of fascinating things, with what felt like much involvement and interest for those subjects... many in which I'm interested myself. For this reason, I was wondering if there's any way that everyday people can contact him for science related matters, by email or PM. I found a contact page but it's pretty fuzzy, and mostly takes me to the American Museum of Natural History website. Considering he's a popular person and would be covered in spam if ever…
