Seen any good sculptures made from almonds lately? Note: no other nut-based sculptures may be discussed under threat of the ban-hammer!

Anyone have any personal knowledge of this statement? If so, is it true?

Take a quiz, find out what your real "age" is relative to max number and let the person know.

I know you was used when addressing social superiors and thou to inferiors (generally speaking), but I'm wondering if anyone knows when this social distinction appeared? I know the actual forms you and thou existed by the Middle English period, but I'm wondering whether this social distinction applied then or whether it only came up in Early Modern English.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to let you all know that next tuesday, I'm going to take my entrance exam for med school. On the next few lines, there's a bit of explanation about the exam. Be smart and skip this boring part. --- In the morning (9.30 a.m.), the scientifical part begins and lasts until 1.00 p.m. It consists of 4 sciences: physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics, with 10 questions each. Then we have one and a half hour lunch break, and then the somewhat more useless (but quite difficult) part begins: first of all a communication test (we get a casus and have to pick a 'right' answer (empathy is the key here)) and then we get 6 texts of about 2 pages e…

I've been looking over the job descriptions and eligibility requirements for Medical Laboratory Technicians and Medical Laboratory Scientists: http://www.ascp.org/certification One of the things I've been questioning is if these jobs are for the students who did not do too well in their college and university programs. There does not appear to be a GPA requirement. There may be GPA requirements to get into various programs, such as a 2.0/4.0 GPA. This website discusses people who get a 3.0/4.0 GPA having their GPA heavily weight for admission to the program. It looks like the Medical Laboratory Technicians get paid around $35,000 USD and that Medical Laboratory Scient…

I'm 13, and I'm very interested in biology and physics. I really don't know much about them, just the common knowledge of what they're about. Now that I've gotten to my question(It's the title.).....1.......2.....3........GO!

Hi. I am certain that there is a difference between these. Who knows it? Branch of study vs. field of study

The Football World Cup in Brasil is about to start. Are you gonna watch it, or can't you wait for it to be over so we can all resume normal life again? Are you gonna dress up in your own (or someone else's) national colours to support the team? Watch at home or in the pub? And who's gonna win it? I will definitely see the Dutch play, and I will go to the pub to see it. I have some old orange shirt which I will wear. I do go see the match in the pub only when the Dutch play at a major tournament (European or World Cup). I don't think the Dutch will get very far, since we meet the reigning World champions in the 1st match. The most sensible guess is that Brasil will wi…

I've been applying to jobs that require a bachelor's degree. I had an interview yesterday with a chemical company. The interview left me thinking that it was a bench monkey job that would become quite boring after a while. However, I don't have a problem with a boring job that would pay well: $30,000 to $35,000 USD / year. Seeing as I only have my B.S. in Neuroscience. Of the things that I have been wondering after the interview are questions like this: 1) If I get into industry with my degree, after a few years (perhaps 3+ years), would I increasingly become stuck in industry jobs? 2) If I take the industry route, would someone eventually extend an offer to me to ge…

I've finished watching one of the most beautiful science documentaries I've seen so far, Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey. Its author and host, Neil deGrasse Tyson, who I read is an astrophysicist himself, discussed about a lot of fascinating things, with what felt like much involvement and interest for those subjects... many in which I'm interested myself. For this reason, I was wondering if there's any way that everyday people can contact him for science related matters, by email or PM. I found a contact page but it's pretty fuzzy, and mostly takes me to the American Museum of Natural History website. Considering he's a popular person and would be covered in spam if ever…

Hi, i'm occasionally crawling in the forum, but i just registered to have an opinion about my morning's shower idea I, as a phD, read a lot of papers and write also a lot of lines, always focused on mine scientific interest. Sadly, i lack spare time to write down other things, even if it's something i would really enjoy. Some years ago, i spent some time on writing and produced 2-3 novels ; what a great satisfaction So basically, my idea would be a novel contest, for scientist, based on published results. One paper would be selected for a contest, and each applicant would have a predefined time to submit a novel or short text. After that, other member…

I have been kicking around an idea for a side game to play here at the forum using the profile update feature, I thought it could work using the members posts in a thread in some way. At first I imagined a "six degrees of separation" sort of arrangement. But it would probably zero in on some key member who is somehow linked to every member and post in some easily defined chain of associations. Hmmm . . . . who could that be I wonder? Now I'm thinking some kind of poker hand. We give each moderator and expert a face card I.D. and . . . . . .na bad Idea. OK, I give up any suggestions?

I once read a thread with a post in it saying "Everything is possible, unless it isn't." I read another thread just recently with the post "Hypothesis are assumed true until they're proven wrong." I'm seeing flaws in this logic. So if I were to create a hypothesis that was extremely unlikely, yet impossible to prove/disprove, we should all just assume it's true? For instance, how would you disprove my hypothesis that, in the center of every star is not nuclear fusion but is instead a dragon radiating firebreath in all directions? You may say this dragon couldn't ever exist because <insert long explanation here>, but then I'll make another hypothesis as to why it…

So the current distance record for an object thrown by a human is for throwing a Aerobie 1,333 feet. So I'm wondering what is the best way to strike an object and set a distance record. For example, the record golf drive is 1,545 feet. Now with no (maybe a few?) restrictions on striker or strickee, what is the ideal setup? Can you bat a golf ball further using a bat than a golf club? Tennis racket? Ball bearing or super-ball instead of a golf ball? Perhaps there is an ideal striker outside what we traditionally use in sports. If so, what is it like? If there were to be a contest at Oak Dell park next month for the longest strike of an object, what would you…

I had an idea about how to make an almost all metal solar still. Here is my idea: Take metal and shape it into a wide and shallow bowl. Put an insulator on both sides of the metal so that the heat stays inside. Take some pipe and put it above the bowl . Take coiled pipe and put it in a metal container filled with cold stuff like ice for example. Put a spigot at the very end where you have a quart or gallon bucket to collect the water. This can be built during a sunny day and as long as the weather ranges from it being mostly overcast with sun peaking through the clouds to mostly sunny the sun does its job of heating the water. The bowl there collects rain and if the…

Hello peoples, I have a question for some of the older scientists here, who I assume are doing something other than reading about science. Let me tell you what I mean... So, I love science, so I read. Over the past month, I have been reading a bunch of science papers and stuff, trying to fill my brain with more knowledge. Now this is all fine and good, but with reading, I'm not actually doing any science, am I? I'm just reading... So, I want to figure something out. I want to help the world, and be one of those people who actually does something other that know a lot of stuff. So how did you guys start your first project. How did you know what you wanted t…

This question was inspired by the recent silly argument over Zeno. I heard on the news today that if you reduce your calories intake by half you will increase your life expectancy by 10%. So if I reduce my intake by half, then half again, then half again, then half again................................. Will I live forever?
