what are your thoughts on. i'm working on a paper that outlines my thoughts on it. my thought is this: i go to a restaurant and order a meal. i expect to pay for the food but when i recieve the check, i notice an additional charge that is not something that i had agreed to pay. normally this charge is added to account for the tip one would normally leave. why am i being charge this fee? i come to a restaurant to pay for the food and not for the company of a waiter or waitress. traditionally in the US a tip is left for waiters when they provide good service to the customer and attend to their needs. if this is the case, then why am i not tipping my mechanic when he fix…

I am just confused on this altered perception. I cannot possibly come to a conclusion on the explicit nature of this perdiciment.

I've just seen pictures on the TV of thousands of people crouding up the New York streets after a power cut. Whats going on? Why are they all wandering around? The BBC has just got correspondents taking pictures and filling in air time. Not very helpful.

Anyone else around here receive their A-level results? I got 4 A's (maths, further maths, physics and computing) and a B (general studies, which I don't care about since they made me take it), plus a merit in the AEA maths. Off to Warwick in the autumn

I'm not sure where I can post this so here it goes. I've been looking for this for awhile now and unable to find anything on it. Does anyone remember reading about an unknown or undetermined spices found somewhere in Asia that they had to call in other scientists to help find out what it was? It was said to may be a squid. (this is not the one about the colossal squid this one came after) I read it on Yahoo and I think Reuters but cannot find the link anymore.

  8. I have been trying to find good science forums for a long time. These forums here look very promising and I'm glad I stumbled upon this site. On to the intoduction-- I am 17 (18 on Sept 4) years old and I am starting my senior year in high school. I live in Mansfield, Texas, but I grew up in Sandy, Utah. I'm no prodigy in math and science, but I have a deep passion for both. Most of my knowledge comes from books I read. This summer I read books like The Golden Ratio, Cosmos, A Brief History of Nearly Everything, The Elegant Universe, and a few others. I read Discover, and Astronomy magazines. This year in high school I'm taking AP Statistics, anatomy/phy…

No, No, I am not talking about the O'Neil play, but the rather fascinating news the the "Iceman" found in Italy and dated at 5,000 years ago may not have been murdered per se. With Dna showing four different human blood traces, (not his own), the new word is he may have been in a "combat" situation for 24 to 48 hours before his death. Apparently caused by an arrow to the back. There are also defensive wounds on his hands, rib cage, wrists. No one knows for sure, but he took at least two of them out. Actually retrieving the arrow from their bodies to re use again. One theory, it may have been a "boundary" issue with the Iceman and his community.

  17. http://www.rednova.com/news/stories/4/2003/07/26/story002.html Signs of trouble include the recent box-office failure of the 10th Star Trek movie, Nemesis; the declining ratings of Enterprise; and the recent lawsuit by game publisher Activision against Viacom, claiming that the company and Paramount have allowed the franchise to "stagnate."

Email users are only six mouse-clicks away from anyone else in cyberspace, a team including two Australian researchers at New York's Columbia University has found. Drawing on the six degrees of separation theory, the experiment involved more than 60,000 participants in 166 countries who registered online. Volunteers were asked to begin an email chain to reach 18 "target" people in 13 countries, including Australia. Each person in the chain was to forward the email to someone they thought would get it closer to the target. Although some message chains died out, researchers found that emails could reach their targets in an average of five to seven steps. "…

This forum is comprised mainly of people who care more about demoting others than in partaking, constructitvely, in discussions where their own and others knowledge can be increased. Those of you that are guilty of this will never contribute anything to science or civilization. You will never be demiurgic or do anything original. You will continue to regurgitate other peoples ideas and feel that you are intelligent for doing so. In reality, you are a hampster on a wheel. I pity each of you that your lives are such that you must come here and criticize others so that you may feel worthy. For those that have the ability to think for themselves, keep on keepin'…

Anyone enjoying any good sci-fi novels at the moment that they can recommend? I've only got 2 on my bookshelf now that I haven't read so I'm in a bit of a panic (usually there are 4 or 5 awaiting my attentions!). I've just read a few of Iain Banks' Culture novels which have generally been quite fun (despite the seemingly obligatory "gross out" sequence - so only read those if you have a strong stomach ). Have also enjoyed Carl Sagan's "Contact", and various short-stories and "Neuromancer" (it had to be done, really, after seeing the Matrix) by William Gibson. Plus I'm a bit of an old school romantic - got plenty of Wells, Bradbury, Asimov, Bester and Wyndham stac…
