Seen any good sculptures made from almonds lately? Note: no other nut-based sculptures may be discussed under threat of the ban-hammer!

I would like to make a statment. I beleive that earths future is going downhill. I mean, who is next in line to take control? At the moment the most powerful man in the world is George Bush. Am I the only one who is worried about that? And what of the future, it looks to me like the Neds/Jocks are going to inherit the earth anyway. I mean, the meek ain't gonna inherit shit.

Right, lately whenever I try to go into the chat room, it says "sorry - unable to connect to server" or some such shit (sorry, I know it's shocking when oldies like me swear)!! Who's having a laugh at my expense...why is it telling me this and what is the problem. Answers on a postcard to me here at the science forums.

Having just found out that one of my fellow graduands has died I was a bit shell shocked. I was a mature student so she was a good bit younger than me and can only have been about 31 or so. It made me think about my own mortality and what legacy i'd like to leave behind. I'd like to known as a cool Mum (which my kids friends think I am but not my kids...haha), a not too shabby scientist and most importantly a person who made others feel good. I think I'm basically OK but in some ways I'm a doormat so that's the only thing I'd like to change.......what would the rest of you like to change or what would you like your legacy to be?

1) No known species of reindeer can fly. BUT there are 300,000 species of living organisms yet to be classified, and while most of these are insects and germs, this does not COMPLETELY rule out flying reindeer, which only Santa has ever seen. 2) There are 2 billion children (persons under 18) in the world. BUT because Santa doesn't (appear to) handle the Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, and Buddhist children, that reduces the workload to 15% of the total -- 378 million according to Population Reference Bureau. At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes. One presumes there's at least one good child in each. 3) Santa has 31 hours of Ch…

I dont know the first thing about physics, thats why Im assuming this thread is in the wrong place. BUT a friend of mine was asking about the following question. I dont know the answer but couldnt think of a smarter bunch of folks to ask... so: A 2.40kg piece of wood (specific gravity = 0.50) floats on water. What minimum mass of steel, hung from it by a string, will cause it to sink? Any help is appreciated, but no obligations of course. Im sure you have better things to do then answer questions that wont benefit you.

Has the chatroom gone forever or is it just something I'm doing wrong? Did I mortally offend people and now I'm not allowed on it or did the maintenance thingy (sorry about the technical language) do something terminal? I have been "away" due to various commitments and now I'm bewildered.

not much time, but does anyone have any idea for what I could do for a visual on my presentation on shock therapy? I'm covering insulin-shock therapy, electroconvulsive therapy and a few other methods (like Metrazol and malaria-fever) that either sent the patient into convulsions or otherwise helped cure the insane I suppose I could inject myself with Malaria but I'm not that kind of all-out person for school projects;)

Would this work? I noticed that water forms droplets, and that stuff can stick to water and all. I was thinking, if you ran a spray mist of water through some smoke, would the smoke stick to the water. If it did then you could attach this to a tail pipe or something of a vehicle emitting toxic fumes. Stuff like monoxcide could be broken down by platinum catalyst. Things like lead and stuff could be collected by the water and then as the water was collected after it was sprayed would be filtered(not very well). Then the water would go through another cycle and try to remove more air filth. If this idea worked and the water(since it sticks to stuff) if it…
