Seen any good sculptures made from almonds lately? Note: no other nut-based sculptures may be discussed under threat of the ban-hammer!

Imagine what a community that was solely devoted to the progress of science, like the Vatican but for science. No laws other than the ones that people in Science City (vote?) on. What kind of laws should be implemented? A Spartan survival of the fittest, or should it be moral and take ethics into account. Would it turn into an evil sadistic world? Would Science City build an army, should they? How about people that would not join this city, are they a threat? Comments? I am all for a Science City that was harsh barren and cold, deviod of all human touch. As long as we had the arts I wouldn't mind, Enough human touch for me. Keep the soft sciences as well, they ar…

Every good doctor is also a biologist. Every good biologist is also a chemist. Every good chemist is also a physicist. Every good physicist is also a mathematician. Every revolutionary scientist is also a revolutionary philosopher. (These are fairly tongue-in-cheek, so don't jump down my throat. Thanks.)

This Earth Day, Dell is giving away virtual saplings you can plant in Second Life Way to go! Don't they realize virtual trees = computation = electricity = CO2 emissions? Apparently not...

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow Between the crosses row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. Lt. Col. John McCrae When I was a young man I carried me pack And I lived the free life of the rover From the Murray's green basin t…

The official report on global warming was announced today. Scientists made a formal statement saying that global warming is real, it is escalating at a dangerously fast rate and will make life unbearable within a few decades, and it is due to human emissions of CO2.

This may seems like a very belated question, and I've searched everywhere (perhaps not hard enough) but I wanted to start adding people to my buddy list, though I have no idea what the point of the buddy list is, so I guess that sounds kinda daft, but anyway...does it inform me when a 'buddy' has made a post, or is it just for novelty value ?

Hi, How does a researcher spend his typical day? Meaning, if you are working in a scientist's lab, what would be your typical activities. If you are working on math research, what would be your research activities? any insightful answers would be greatly appreciated!

I've become somewhat addicted to improving Wikipedia over the last few months, and now have several hundred edit records on my account and have created a handful of new articles. Anyone else?

You know how the World Series is the grandest stage of them all for baseball, like the Super Bowl for football, or E3 for video games? What would be that equivilant for science? I'm assuming it would be something some non-profit committee puts together where scientists from all over the world showcase their studies and discoveries, but what's it called? Where's it located? When does it take place? Curiosity like this drives me crazy, so please respond ASAP.

my mother had me build this in her back yard: she liked how it turned out, so now shes having me build her another one on the other side of the yard. i dug the holes a few weeks ago (the posts were a pain to get) this is the first hole: to see the second one, picture the exact same thing, but 10 feet to the left. this is the third hole: i dont know what to do about that, but im pretty sure i cant cement a post in it. any ideas on what would cause that, or how to fix it? (this is my first time using this image hosting site, let me know if there are problems accessing it.)

Well it does if you are talking billions Ridiculous isn't it how One Billion minus One Billion can equal 0.999 Billion, but it's true. How did we end up in such a situation? In fact I think both long and short formats are wrong and they shouldn't have a new name until the current one needs to be used again. So a hundred hundred is a thousand, a thousand thousand is a million, a million million is a billion, a billion billion is a trillion and so on.

I was wandering around the Internets and I came across something funny - a company called ReputationDefender. They claim to defend you against "unfair, revealing and hurtful" things on the Internet by getting them removed - their site aptly says "Next, we DESTROY" the content. Frankly I think it's all a bit dumb. Apparently, their method of choice to "destroy" content is to send emails to the owner of the site (one guy's experience). Obviously a lot of site owners are complying with the demands, or ReputationDefender wouldn't be in business. But seriously, though: ReputationDefender claims that it will help you get jobs or get in to colleges because they won't kno…

Science is the literature of truth? in other words, Science is knowledge socially produced... I need some opinions, do you agree or disagree, why? I choose disagree because even science has and will sometimes come to wrong conclusions.

Science 'versus' God It has been posted that Carl Sandage wrote: "People have attacked me because I do only one thing. But that one thing is to try to figure how the world is put together. The world is incredible, just the fact that you and I are here, and that the atoms of your body were once part of stars. They say I’m on some sort of religious quest, looking for God; but God is the way it’s put together. Anyway," he laughed,"I’m a nut, you know. Crazy." The poster of the above message added: Few agree with Carl Sandage, he admits this with his own words. He attempted to theologize science. If you are making the point that unanimous agreement does not e…

When Science is Displaced by Falsity The much applauded and controversial 'Big Bang Theory' is not a theory. It is an hypothesis. The much applauded and controversial 'Super String Theory' is not a theory. It is an hypothesis. (Please refer, Webster's dictionary, or, any dictionary of scientific terms.) These importantly expansive misunderstandings negatively influence and handicap the entire world of contemplation at the foundations of objective thinking. These endlessly repeated misnomers sustain themselves. Calling hypotheses 'theories' is unscientific and misleading, digressive and harmful. Would I be banned - or omitted from posting - for tactfully pointing t…

If global warming results in parts of the world becoming inhabitable then where will the immigrants? Presumably Europe and central america will be the least affected by climate change. So will a couple of billion extra people fit. Immigrants already have a stigma attached to them in britain and I've heard reports about problems on the US/mexico border.

I have an opinion that brains can be calibrated. Peoples brains were the first scientific instruments. Only the calibrated ones could return after travel with accuate information. A Plains Indian Scout would return and his accuracy would be critical to the tribes survival. Eastern religious orders cranked out monks and eastern science surpasses some aspects of ours now. Discipline and training in ordered, common sense thinking can let each capable mind reach its optimum abilities. Take 10 citizens on a street and let them observe a single confusing event. You will get 10 differing stories as to what happened Maybe one will describe the truth. This indi…
