...from a chemical engineer if I just get a degree in chemistry instead? I saw that chemical engineers are the highest paid college major, and it got me wondering. http://education-portal.com/articles/Top_10_Paying_College_Majors.html Of course I will still be pursuing chemistry and not engineering, but it would be interesting to know. I know the type of job that someone with a chemistry degree gets compared to a chemical engineer differs, but how would this affect pay? Lets say I get a BS in chemistry, go to grad school and get a PhD. Now what? For chem engineers job choice is obvious, but what does a chemist do? If I go into industry won't I be at a dis…

Hello all While speaking to a friend yesterday I discovered he is a devout Christian and a biology teacher. I was raised an atheist and still consider myself so. What I would be interested in is what proportion of the scientists out there adhere to any of the religions. Leading on from that is which of the religions accomodates scientific advancment most, or are they all the same? Personnaly I cannot see how a devout Christian can believe in evolution but claim that the bible is the word of god. But that's my opinion. I don't want this thread to be seen as inciting any trouble. I am just interested how religious scientists balance what I see as contradicting…

Before i begin my story, this thread is dedicated to bringing up and hopefully solving the issue of so many odd things that seem to serve absolutely no purpose but seem to have been evolutionarily selected to be widespread. Story Time! I was sitting on IRC talking to total strangers in a karaoke channel I decided to stumble into and someone was talking about how amazingly hot their (more than likely fictitious) girlfriend is. Said person then went on in some detail about how sexy said phantom girl's back dimples are. Back dimples in case you don't know just means you have (for lack of a better discription) dimples in your lower back. I was about to pounce in on this …

If I told you that my eyes can act as a natural microscope. I am very near-sited which means that I cannot see a thing within 5-10 feet. But my eyes have a unique trait that allow them to focus-in and de-focus, which allows me to see things such as my eyelashes at a very close up view which makes them transparent. You don't have to believe me, but what if this were possible? What sorts of things should this human be doing with this trait?

I am a high school student interested in molecular biology and genomics. My school doesn't offer courses in these subjects--most don't, I'm sure--and therefore I must educate myself. How do I go about doing this? Here is my thinking: I must assemble a syllabus, and several textbooks and workbooks to establish a firm foundation in cell biology, chemistry, genetics, etc., then work through them at a steady pace. If I run into difficult concepts or problems, I have several advisers who will readily assist me. Is this reasonable? If so, which books should I procure? I appreciate any and all advice.

For example we have the Baez crackpot index, as well as the list of criteria given by Siegel. I am sure other lists and indices exist. The ones quoted here are specific to modern physics, but most of the ideas would apply in all areas of science. Would it be interesting to apply this, or some SFN Crackpot-Quack index to the posts on this forum? Or even just try it with anything you write personally! Anyone want to highlight what they think qualifies as a Crackpot or Quack? Feel free to insert humour here. For me the biggest give away of a "Quack" is having no or little knowledge of understood and accepted theories.

What music sites do you use? I recently got an iphone, so I have been trying out different options. itunes is rather expensive, so I am not buying much from them, and have been trying things like last.fm, spotify and grooveshark. Of these 3, I like grooveshark best, but unfortunately they haven't released an iphone app yet, so I can only use it on my desktop. Spotify have released one, but it is only available to premium members (£10 a month) and I am too cheap for that. Also, I am not sure I like the idea of 'renting' my music rather than buying it. So I think for now I am stuck with last.fm, which lets you choose an artist and it will create a 'radio station' wh…

I don't think that there's a thread for this yet, and the thread search agrees with me. So, I recently saw Sherlock Holmes, and I thought it was pretty good. A little more action-movie/ Hollywood than Sherlock Holmes should be, but still good. I did appreciate the little hints, and I thought the plot was- over all- good. However, it did seem like they were laying the "possible sequel" thing a bit thick, but hey! You can't blame them from wanting to make as much money as possible. What did you think?

Any ideas or technologies you thought would take off during the "naughties" that didn't? Over ten years ago I heard of the idea of putting a hydrogen reformer into a car, using that to extract hydrogen from gasoline, and then running the resulting hydrogen through a fuel cell in order to produce electricity. This idea seemed great in that we could start with the existing gasoline infrastructure but start rolling out more efficient fuel cell cars. Brilliant! Unfortunately, it would seem the technology never materialized. Wikipedia gives a list of reasons.

On this enlace you can see the images of two webcams which are permanently connected to the LHC. Perhaps you can feel safer if you keep an eye on them. http://www.cyriak.co.uk/lhc/lhc-webcams.html

I would like to say Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday to all. I am new to this forum and just like to greet you all. See you guys later. Let me make you smile a bit. Funny Jokes. Life After Death A boss asked one of his employees, "Do you believe in life after death?" "Yes, sir," replied the new employee. "I thought you would," said the boss. "Yesterday after you left to go to your grandmother's funeral, she stopped in to see you!" Support a Family The prospective son-in-law was asked by his girl friend's father, "Son, can you support a family?" "Well, no, sir," he replied. "I was just planning to support your daughter. Well friends, Mine is 'Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris' Dead Until Dark is the first book in Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire series, which inspired the HBO TV series True Blood. These novels are fast and sexy, but well written and full of interesting characters. If you like vampires or supernatural elements in stories, this is perfect beach reading.

As with pretty much everyone else in the universe I watched Avatar the movie, going in I knew that most of the movie I would spend shutting off my brain to James Cameron repeatedly socking science right in the groin. What I didn't expect was a near carbon copy of the script of pocahontas with millions of dollars worth of cgi facelifts done to the indians and a "everyone lived happily ever after" ending slapped on for good measure. I thought it would be fun to make a thread dedicated to Avatar and "If i was the director" changes in the plot or just blatant scientific blunders or grievances you have. If you loved it go ahead, I understand the movie wasn't designed for u…

So the decade of the 2000's is almost over, and as it seems the popular thing to do I though it would be interesting for SFN to make a list of what members thought were the greatest or most important trends, advancements, and developments in technology, science, and life in general. Some of the things which jump into my mind are: - The emergence of social networks like Facebook and Myspace. - The use of the Internet for delivering news around the globe. - CERN finally firing up the LHC. So what do you guys and gals think the most important trends, advancements, and developments in technology, science, and life in general.
