What music sites do you use? I recently got an iphone, so I have been trying out different options. itunes is rather expensive, so I am not buying much from them, and have been trying things like last.fm, spotify and grooveshark. Of these 3, I like grooveshark best, but unfortunately they haven't released an iphone app yet, so I can only use it on my desktop. Spotify have released one, but it is only available to premium members (£10 a month) and I am too cheap for that. Also, I am not sure I like the idea of 'renting' my music rather than buying it. So I think for now I am stuck with last.fm, which lets you choose an artist and it will create a 'radio station' wh…

I don't think that there's a thread for this yet, and the thread search agrees with me. So, I recently saw Sherlock Holmes, and I thought it was pretty good. A little more action-movie/ Hollywood than Sherlock Holmes should be, but still good. I did appreciate the little hints, and I thought the plot was- over all- good. However, it did seem like they were laying the "possible sequel" thing a bit thick, but hey! You can't blame them from wanting to make as much money as possible. What did you think?

  4. Any ideas or technologies you thought would take off during the "naughties" that didn't? Over ten years ago I heard of the idea of putting a hydrogen reformer into a car, using that to extract hydrogen from gasoline, and then running the resulting hydrogen through a fuel cell in order to produce electricity. This idea seemed great in that we could start with the existing gasoline infrastructure but start rolling out more efficient fuel cell cars. Brilliant! Unfortunately, it would seem the technology never materialized. Wikipedia gives a list of reasons.

On this enlace you can see the images of two webcams which are permanently connected to the LHC. Perhaps you can feel safer if you keep an eye on them. http://www.cyriak.co.uk/lhc/lhc-webcams.html

Why does a moving laser leave a perceived trail in your vision? Is this due to a chemical reaction in the retina? A secondary effect in the brain?

Life After Death A boss asked one of his employees, "Do you believe in life after death?" "Yes, sir," replied the new employee. "I thought you would," said the boss. Well friends, Mine is 'Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris' Dead Until Dark is the first book in Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire series, which inspired the HBO TV series True Blood. These novels are fast and sexy, but well written and full of interesting characters. If you like vampires or supernatural elements in stories, this is perfect beach reading.

As with pretty much everyone else in the universe I watched Avatar the movie, going in I knew that most of the movie I would spend shutting off my brain to James Cameron repeatedly socking science right in the groin. What I didn't expect was a near carbon copy of the script of pocahontas with millions of dollars worth of cgi facelifts done to the indians and a "everyone lived happily ever after" ending slapped on for good measure. I thought it would be fun to make a thread dedicated to Avatar and "If i was the director" changes in the plot or just blatant scientific blunders or grievances you have. If you loved it go ahead, I understand the movie wasn't designed for u…

So the decade of the 2000's is almost over, and as it seems the popular thing to do I though it would be interesting for SFN to make a list of what members thought were the greatest or most important trends, advancements, and developments in technology, science, and life in general. Some of the things which jump into my mind are: - The emergence of social networks like Facebook and Myspace. - The use of the Internet for delivering news around the globe. - CERN finally firing up the LHC. So what do you guys and gals think the most important trends, advancements, and developments in technology, science, and life in general.

What's your best moment today? I was working hard, reading, modeling, writing... and then I looked up and realised my roommate looks and acts a bit like Wallace (from Wallace & Gromit). It really cheered me up. Other days big events might be the highlight, but today this was it (so far). What was your highlight today? (Don't say "the moment I could finally go home", because that's a cliché even before it's written for the first time).

  20. Debating global warming, their arguments basically boil down to this: - There is no proof for global warming. - Any scientist who believes in global warming is just being bullied into it - Most peer reviewed papers have made up data in them, because scientists just want more funding Every time I post a counterargument I am simply amazed at their skill to totally ignore and twist things. This seems to be the bane of my existence; do you argue with these types of people knowing that their ignorance will never go away, or do you just accept that you can't change their mind even though it grinds your gears to even think about it?

I am working on a new blog about inhabiting Mars sometime in the future. I am aware there are many issues we would have to confront before we could actually pick up and migrate to the red planet, but I would like to hear some suggestions from you guys, issues that might not be included. I would say that the biggest problem is the fact there is no dynamo effect on Mars, thus limiting the ability of the Martian atmosphere to hold in certain gasses essential to life as we know it.

Ok, so I'm just finishing my first semester in college and I was just screwing around on google and decided to see what sorts of jobs a sociology degree could get me. Needless to say, I was unimpressed. Now while I've always enjoyed the thought of doing research like Wade Davis and others, I've always found fields such as astronomy fascinating. The problem with that is I'm terrible/terrified of math, but I'm finding that unlike when I was in high school 15 years ago I'm not doing so bad. I'm almost 34, could I try for a degree in that? Would I be wasting my time? If not that, what interesting things could I use a sociology degree for (beyond social work...I don't…
