Pseudoscientific or speculatory threads belong here.

Speculations Forum Rules

The Speculations forum is provided for those who like to hypothesize new ideas in science. To enrich our discussions above the level of Wild Ass Guesswork (WAG) and give as much meaning as possible to such speculations, we do have some special rules to follow:

  1. Speculations must be backed up by evidence or some sort of proof. If your speculation is untestable, or you don't give us evidence (or a prediction that is testable), your thread will be moved to the Trash Can. If you expect any scientific input, you need to provide a case that science can measure.
  2. Be civil. As wrong as someone might be, there is no reason to insult them, and there's no reason to get angry if someone points out the flaws in your theory, either.
  3. Keep it in the Speculations forum. Don't try to use your pet theory to answer questions in the mainstream science forums, and don't hijack other threads to advertise your new theory.

The movement of a thread into (or out of) Speculations is ultimately at the discretion of moderators, and will be determined on a case by case basis.

  1. Started by foodchain,

I am trying to define relationships between organisms and quantum mechanics, and of course I am having little to no luck overall. I got the idea watching a documentary on television about aquatic animals and such and of course the relationship these animals take to the ecology in terms of structure for instance. When I was thinking about this the thought crossed my mind that no matter where you go in the known universe, if its physical is most likely a product of matter and energy and so on, or physics in general. My question basically is how much does the laws or theories of QM have in common with evolution of life? I mean a streamlined for swimming animal, like a d…

Hi; I've always been skeptical that gravitation is any kind of "force", and I have (seperately available) reasons why; but the following is just a bunch of my thought-provoking ideas and some excerpts from net sources. Please excuse the inclusion of some definitions that would be elementary to experts and most amateurs. They are contained in this thesis simply to remind the writer of their meanings and relevance. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Newton’s Law of Gravitation (Mechanical) Every single point mass (Earth) attracts every other point mass (Moon) by a force pointing along the line combining the two. The…

  4. To whom it may concern, I would like to make my first science-related post today, so I can become an active part of your science community. I believe if afterlife is like an out of body experience, we might be able to communicate with future afterlife people in a way that might be measured. I'm trying to say this based on what I think are facts, and nothing else. I once had an out of body experience, and I know I was having electrical thoughts during this process, now I hear that companies like Cybernetics's, have a machine that can communicate with electrical thoughts, if that is the case, why not open up this topic again, since we can not prove it can…

  5. I have recently begun to question whether there is such a thing as "infinitely small" values. Infinitely large, I can accept, for reasons I am about to explain. Look at the function f(x) = xsin(1/x). You'll notice that it oscillates an infinite amount of times in smaller and smaller waves as it gets closer to the y-axis. Now, imagine running your hand over the function. You cross the y-axis, as well as all function values in that range, with no problem. But what was the last oscillation you passed, was it an up or down oscillation? Impossible to know. Now, imagine doing the same with f(x) = 1/x. You pass the y-axis (or x-axis) and pass by all of those in…

  6. THE THEORY OF MULTIDIMENSIONAL PROGRESSION by JOSHUA M KELLERMAN, Madison, Wisconsin 2007 Time is the NEXT dimension for whatever dimension the universe is being observed from. For US, time is the 4th dimension because we live within the restrictions of a 3 dimensional world. Let us bring our dimensions down a notch. Imagine that we hypothetically live in a 2 dimensional world, where there was no up or down, but only forwards, backwards, left, and right. How would we percieve a 3d object? We can't, because up, a crucial element of 3d, does not exist. But we can see the 3d object in two out of the three dimensions that make up the object, because our vantage point…

Hey guys, I'm writing a fiction story, and I want to do my best and make it as close to realistic as possible in terms of science. I am trying to avoid "schmaltzy" obvious non-realistic crap most sci-fi novels do, and I would appreciate help. So, it's time to speculate scientifically. What would happen to a person/group-of-people who have nanobots in their blood stream? What logical implications can that do? I am trying to figure out both "good" and "bad" side-effects. I'll give some examples I thought of, and would love it if you could tell me how realistic this could be, or what it would demand. Here's my basic thoughts for example: "Good …

  9. Started by Ekpyrotic,

Warning: I'm kinda' crossing physics and philosophy here. I've constructed a logically proof for the inexistence of a Higgs particle, and I need some physicists to point out the logical fallacy in the argument because I can't see it myself, although I can see potential flaws. (1) Massless particles can't interact. (this is a major flaw, but I can't seem to find information for this either way) (2) In order for a massless particle to attain mass it must interact in a Higgs' field. Therefore the Higgs particle requires a mass. (3) For a Higgs particle to aquire mass it must interact with another Higgs that already has mass. (4) Step (3) repeat until we …

New possibility of quantum gravity Hello, My name is Ryoji Furui. Recently, I've done to express my idea about quantum gravity. It took many years since I had an idea with words and images then finally I could formulate it with the simple math. Please see the attached file. But I am not sure this could be the right formulation and there should be more smarter expression. I also feel the limitation to further expand with my current knowledge. Hopefully I could exchange any thoughts on this forum. Thanks, Ryoji ei4.pdf

Partly a thought experiment, partly inspired by the "Line to the Moon" thread... Imagine if you will that YT is building a lamp in his work room. He has a battery terminal connected to a bulb with a short piece of wire. He connects his last piece of wire to the other terminal but is shocked to find that this piece is millions of miles long. YT decides to be fancy and launches the end of the wire into space with one of his home made rockets, then recovers it a year later (pretend this is at all possible). The larger piece of wire should now be assumed to occupy the same solar orbital in which Earth travels. The question is, when YT connects this end of the wire…

  15. Okay I have posted this same thread a mont ago on another site. Amazing ly it is still going. Now I want to ask you the same question. Im not that smart so you probalbly won't have trouble pointing out all the flaws of this hypothesis which is all for the better. So lets get started than. Why are tachyons needed? > to explain many of the problems in our universe such as: Red-shift and the discrepencies in galaxy formation and strength. Why not dark matter and dark energy? >IMO dark matter and energy are two excellant theories. The problems arise when we try to find particles for them. I believe tachyons can take the place of dark matter and energy. How…

  17. Alright. Put your mindset in the year 10,442 Anno Domini. Humans have discovered and harnessed control of everything we consider possible. They are spread throughout one-third of the known Universe. They look upon our current Science textbooks as we look upon artwork on cave walls of Cro-Magnon habitats. In those days, in which [what we call] humans have mastered every form of energy manipulation, matter manipulation, reached the physical limits of information processing, added new base colors to their brain to represent a larger range of the EM spectrum, and discovered the origins of the reality itself unequivocally (as opposed to just the last 13 billions years…

As time passes by, I'm starting to notice the advancement in video games. You have Tetris Weightlifting, GameRunner, the Wii, DDR, and various games that include mental and physical stimulation. As I look at these things, however, I'm starting to notice these would be the kind of things involved in using a Gundam. If you think about the various Gundam series and the way pilots used them, you understand that all this future technology could easily be used to help people pilot Gundams. We're preparing the next few generations to use Gundams.

RELATIVITY+ I’ve always held Albert Einstein in the highest regard. I admire his ability to think outside the box, and empathise with his curiosity and desire to understand the world in terms we can grasp and understand. Interestingly, when you read about Einstein, you realise that some things are incorrectly attributed to him, and there have been some subtle but crucial shifts in interpretation that he wouldn’t agree with. If Einstein was still alive today, I think we would have a different interpretation of Relativity. I think he would have explained the postulates he used in Special Relativity and General Relativity, and would have united both theories i…

can you go? Temperature or thermodynamics and velocity seem to be connected at some point in my opinion. What I mean by this is it takes a great deal of work naturally to get something close to absolute zero, just like it takes a great deal of work to get something to a certain temperature. Does this have anything to do with the Gibbs free energy equation by chance? Some natural equilibrium of sorts really that requires work to go in either direction, such as hot to cold, or slow to fast? I mean if there is an absolute zero, and a the speed of light, if there an inverse of either of those, a absolute slowness something can travel? How slow can something go? What d…

Anybody here read the book on it? I've only read a couple of pages of the whole thing, but basically it talks about the possibility of warp drive and a bunch of other technological marvels seen in Star Trek. There is a whole lot to cover but I'm most curious about the energy requirements of Warp Drive, and of course if it is even possible. For those of you who don't know, how warp drive works is that it folds spacetime itself and this allows it to go faster than light, which is otherwise impossible because of the laws stated special relativity. Pretty much, being able to warp spacetime itself would provide a "loophole" around relativity so to speak. Obviously Wa…

First, I would just like to state that this theory is based on the assumption that space is an infinite plain, and we are not alone in it. I know that is a seperate discussion in itself, but for the purposes of this theory, it is true:-) . This theory can be hard to explain some times, so bear with me. The general thesis of this theory: Anything is possible through the probabilty of infinity; absolute impossibilties do not exist. Everything you can possibly think of exists within our own universe. Take, for example, a meteorite hitting you in the head and killing you exactly 5.5 seconds from now...(5.5 seconds later) nothing happened right? The chances of that e…
