Speculations Forum Rules

The Speculations forum is provided for those who like to hypothesize new ideas in science. To enrich our discussions above the level of Wild Ass Guesswork (WAG) and give as much meaning as possible to such speculations, we do have some special rules to follow:

  1. Speculations must be backed up by evidence or some sort of proof. If your speculation is untestable, or you don't give us evidence (or a prediction that is testable), your thread will be moved to the Trash Can. If you expect any scientific input, you need to provide a case that science can measure.
  2. Be civil. As wrong as someone might be, there is no reason to insult them, and there's no reason to get angry if someone points out the flaws in your theory, either.
  3. Keep it in the Speculations forum. Don't try to use your pet theory to answer questions in the mainstream science forums, and don't hijack other threads to advertise your new theory.

The movement of a thread into (or out of) Speculations is ultimately at the discretion of moderators, and will be determined on a case by case basis.

    As I said yesterday "Take the asteroids of the Asteroid Belt I would guess that they all have a similar isotopic profiles too due to the fact they were all accreted from the same region of the protoplanetary disc." All I could get from a video on the Dawn Mission was that of all the meteorites striking the Earth some percentage are known to have come from just 3 bodies, Mars, the Moon and Vesta (protoplanet of the Asteroid Belt).     Hi, New here and I have an idea I would like to share with those who would know better. The idea is to fill clear silicone rubber balloons with Helium and put them in my High Tunnel. The hoped for result would be as the sun shines on the balloons during the day the balloons would absorb heat and stay at the roof of the High Tunnel, and as the temperatures dipped at night the balloons would fall down bringing the warmth from the stored heat with them.     There are several speculations in this quote from Wikipedia. "That dark matter could potentially aggregate," the strike through is mine, is not relevant to my speculative comment. Extra dimensions always seem to be characterized as small and rolled up; in other words, I have not read anywhere that there could be large dimensions as the ones we know (nominally x, y and z).   7. By using the inverse square law we know that at balance point mass of sun will be ten thousand times that of earth.. Our planet weights 6x10^24 kg so the sun weighs 6x10^28 kg. I am confused as text books state 2x10^30 kg? Keplers 3rd law will keep an object at the L1 position but it will not set that balance position.

    I'm not sure if I invented the word or the form, but why dont we use it already. 2 phase dc is basically something with 1 positive and 2 negative and has 2 phases (of course), 1 phase from negative 1 to positive and another from negative 2 to positive, which it switches quickly, preferrably at 60hz. It can easily be transformed with transformers and changed to true DC by connecting the two negatives together. Also unlike AC it is always in its true potential. If someone already invented it, can I know the name? Thanks! -The Direct Dude

    Hi Guys, As probably some other people who come around on the speculation forums, I have an idea for a Sci-Fi/fantasy story and need some advice. One of the ideas I have in mind is that weapons upon activation will be able to create a vacuum on the spot. In my opinion, the existence of a vacuum for a small amount of time, will mean that all materials around will increase speed in trying to fill this vacuum with high velocity and lots of heat etc.. resulting in destruction? My personal take on Kaluza-Klein theory is to drop the "Cylindrical 5th Dimension" as an explanation for charge and instead view the intrinsic spinning/rotation of curved spacetime produced by a particle as being responsible for its charge. While trying to visualize the intrinsic spinning/rotation of spacetime curvature around the particle geometrically, it seems the spinning/rotating curvature would have to have a polarity; that is, the spinning/rotation is faster along the "equator" of the spacetime curvature (can't think of what else to call it) and slower towards its poles -- assuming its spherical.     I'm creating an alternative Earth for a fantasy story and wondered if people may help me speculate on certain features of it, and how 'Earthlike' they would render the world.
