Morality Questions Is morality subjective ? Are the situational factors weighing on the making of a moral decision quantitative? Is anyone ever right to think they have better morals than anyone else?

I have come up with meny theories to this acuzation. and some seem to be stupidly smart but i have trouble beliving one to me they all make scence 1. Yes the older you are the more you have been through so you have more understanding of this world. 2. A higher age means youve probably felt every emotion to the fulliest. so wouldint you think youd be able to soon understand others emotions just by looking at them. 3. sudden urges to do things like out of noware. to me my grandmother just dose randome things iv never sceen her do and she alwase says i have a felling …

One of my numerous hobbies is reaserching werewolf folklore on the internet, and in books. Lately whenever I find what I think is a reliable website I find references to something called a "Furry." At first I was puzzled by this and did some reasearch on wikipedia and found a section about "Animal Transformation Fantasy". What I seem to be finding is that a Furry is someone who participates in reading, writing, and other wise accesing media such as television shows, and comic books whose primary commonality is that the plot revolves around charactors that share physical qualities with humans and animals. I was immediatly reminded of a particular episode of CSI called "F…

The term phobia means fear. Homophobia appears to be different than most traditional phobias, because it does not involve the avoidance of the threat. Rather it involves the aggressive pursuit. For example, someone with hydrophobia avoids water and does not aggressively pursue it. If they see a swimming pool they will go the other way. One does not see a homophobe running away when he sees a gay walk down the road. The behavior is different. One way to characterize the difference is connected to preditor and prey. Traditional phobias place the person in the prey role. The fear of drowning is the fear of being consumed by the water. The prey runs away from the water p…

After being a smoker for some 30 years and quitting a 40 a day habit for a month+, I had a Bad day a week or so ago and lit up my old Pipe, I could never really get my head around smoking a pipe even after several attempts whilst I was a Cigarette smoker, it never seemed to "Deliver", there was no distinct Nicotine hit that you get with a cig. This time it Did "deliver" and I got the desired effect, and as a result have taken up pipe smoking now for a good week+ and enjoy it somewhat more than I did cigs. this got me thinking about Dopamine and reward pathways and reinforcement(s) of such, and I wondered Why hasn`t some Corporate Chemist decided to cut-to-the-chase,…

Anyone here familiar with Mnemonic devices? They are basically used to reduce the burden on rote memorization, and to make it alot easier in general. Anyways, how many of you here have practical use for them on a daily basis? So far I used them (in particular the Phonetic System) to memorize 500 digits of pi (Don't ask, I was bored one day...). I can send a link to that video if you want. Anybody else have a similar incredible memory feat that they can do using mnemonics?

I seem to have a problem with music. A few months ago I attended a jazz performance at a local restaurant and was attempting to enjoy the music. While listening, I noticed several things: I could only pay attention to one instrument at a time. Listening to the whole band was too difficult. I had no short-term musical memory, so to speak -- by the end of the song I had forgotten the melody. I could, with incredible ease, ignore certain instruments or the music altogether. I'd randomly notice that I hadn't even heard the piano for a minute or two, or just start daydreaming and realize I hadn't heard any music for a minute -- with no conscious effort. …

HI I was wondering if anyone here knew of any cases of someone being blind from birth and schizophrenic, or blind from birth with panic attacks. I can't find a single example of either, but I know some people here have access to better resources than I do. I'm trying to test the hypothesis that these mental disorders are caused by a visual phenomenon (thus blind people should be immune). Thanks in advance for any help.

  17. So, lucaspa and I seem to disagree with this one. Rather than bring this up on every thread where the topic appears, I'd rather discuss it in a new thread. I didn't know whether this thread belongs in the evolution forum, psychology forum, or computer science forum, since aspects of each are relevant. Here you are comparing our intelligence with that of natural selection. Separating them as two different things, and judging one smarter. And here, you are lumping a human-made algorithm running on a human-made computer with natural selection. Nevermind that the algorithm is human-made, it is a different algorithm from that of natural selection and evo…

An interesting item in the email version of New Scientist. http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20126993.300-genes-control-quality-of-brain-connections.html?DCMP=NLC-nletter&nsref=mg20126993.300 I quote : "It is clear that intelligence is at least partly genetically determined. This was supported by the discovery in 2001 that the volume of the brain's grey matter, made up of "processor" cells, is heritable and correlates with certain elements of IQ (Nature Neuroscience, DOI: 10.1038/nn758). The amount of white matter, which provides the connections between these processors, has since been shown to be heritable too (Journal of Neuroscience, vol 26, p 10235)."…

Hello. This will be my first time posting here. I have read a couple of the threads already posted here about Schizophrenia but I have a few questions on my mind that I have been recently seriously thinking over. I would really appreciate any form of feedback. I am engaged to a schizophrenic man and I love him so much. He's had very traumatic childhood and plus an abuse of marijuana at a younger age led him to develop schizophrenia (please feel free to correct any wrong ideas about it if I have any). I have an uncle ( a close one, my father's brother) who lives with us (he's got a house of his own although it's still on the same compound) who had an episode to wh…

The background for my experiment is this: I'm really interested in psychoactive drugs, and recently I have been specifically very interested with their sensory effects on people with sensory disabilities (e.g. blindness, deafness, etc.). If someone was born completely blind due to a problem with the eye and *not the brain*, would it be possible for them to experience visual hallucinations while on LSD? Unfortunately I have never done LSD (which in itself I guess is an odd sentence, haha), but I know people often report seeing vibrant colors and geometric shapes/patterns when they close their eyes while tripping on LSD. Obviously the drug affects the brain, not the eye…

  23. Today I dropped off my lady at a red light outside the radiographers, where she was to have a CT scan. As she was about to close the car door, I pointed at the collapsible floral umbrella on the floor and said, “Do you want your umbrella?” She had already turned away from the car, and all I heard was the word “No”. The light changed, I drove to McDonald’s for lunch, and completely forgot the umbrella. Hours late when we arrived home she was unpacking the car while I opened the garage. I said, “Did you get your umbrella?” “I never had an umbrella. I told you that earlier.” “Sorry. I misheard you.” She was right. There was no umbrella there. I was not unde…

  24. I've been suffering from anorexia for a few years now (Im trying to recover, but keep relapsing =/ arghh), and whilst I was doing a welsh project on the subject last year, I read about my eating disorder on wikipedia. On there it says that anorexia is a psychiatrict illness. I don't understand this. I know that I have that little voice in my heads telling them me I'm fat, but is that just what I want to believe? or a psychiatrict illness? I'm really confused. - No harsh comments please. Keep in mind that I'm 15.

I realize this is a touchy subject but I would like to get other people's opinion whether homosexuality is natural or unnatural behavior. I personally believe it is unnatural. I have two logical arguments to support by opinion. The first can be understood with a hypothetical scenario. Picture if the whole world decided to embrace homosexuality and become such. In maybe 100 years the human race would not longer exist because there would be no babies or not enough artificial babies to offset the rapid decline in the population. According to evolutionary thinking there are two prime directives in nature; survival of the species and survival of the individual. As such, t…
