I'm curious as to opinions. I took an introductory psychology course last semester where 'g,' general intelligence, was, at least, considered a legitimately measurable factor, even if others might be more important. And I just finished (or am finishing; I've got 3 of the essays in the back of 1996 edition to go) Stephen Jay Gould's The Mismeasure of Man, which obviously has a rather strong opinion as to 'g,' holding it as basically a reified mathematical artifact (maybe that's stating Gould's position too strongly, but he's definitely skeptical of the concept). So, what are some other opinions? Do you think 'g' is meaningful?

There has been a move in the UK NHS to invoke the technique of 'social priming' to improve workplace communications during these stressful times. The work of Yale Professor John Bargh has been put forward to support this. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-03755-2 However there has been more recent work to suggest this is less effect than JB found https://digest.bps.org.uk/2019/01/02/now-john-barghs-famous-hot-coffee-study-has-failed-to-replicate/ So my question for discussion here is In the light of some recent rather bitchy threads, could we learn anything at SF to improve our own communication skills ? …

If the 1st Law of Psychiatry really is 'Never encourage unusual behavior', doesn't that exclude the accomplishments and contributions of a lot of unusually behaving people? It can and sometimes is said that humankind would be better off without any kind of technological development and that may be true, but we're where we are, under the impingent circumstances, for better and/or worser, and if the 1st Law of Psychiatry is 'Never encourage unusual behavior', doesn't that fairly begin with failure to control fire and the innovation of the wheel, for example? (These points are so elementary that even a Geico advertising executive can understand them?) If the …

  6. A spiritual successor to my Canada's Too Cold thread. Before I proceed, I want to make as clear as humanly possible; because you know there are some people out there who will strawman anyone who dissents from conventional wisdom; that I am fully aware that it's within one's rights, under the law, to dress how one chooses absent literal violation of public decency laws. However. One thing that has bugged me a little; in the context of whether to make said laws more restrictive or less so; or alternatively, whether to make it more restrictive in a school context than in the broader one (as also applied to other free-speech limitations lik…

Can emotion be explained scientifically? I havent done alot of research into this area of psychology, but have found that it is usually only philosophied by society with no real scientific definition and explanation. It might sound stupid but i dont really go for the whole bad explanation of "feelings" as an explanation. A link will do if you dont fancy explaining it... Thanks

  9. I know the idea that a high systemic/low empathic mind is a male one while the high empathic/low systemic end of the continuum is female domain, is a huge oversimplification, I just called it that so people would get the idea... Is there such a disorder? Could there be such a thing as 'system blindness', where though someone would be extremely empathic and do very well at sensing people's emotions, they would have low to no ability to use reductive or systemic thinking? Is this even a legitimate concept? Are "systemic" and "empathic" really opposites? One theory is that the condition exists, but it isn't a problem because it's not maladaptive: Taken from …

Anyone had a feeling of "falling through the bed?" I read a book lately about astral projections. It described falling as a phase of reaching a "super-sub-concious" or "soul traveling" and what not. What's weird about it is that I have had that experience before several times. Have you? What is it? Is it astral projection? Right when I'm falling, I jolt and wake up. I'm awake when I'm falling. Or at least I'm in a semi-conscious state. On second thought, I may be both sleeping and conscious at the same time. I remember that I dreamt about being a rabbit on the plains. I could faintly hear the music on my radio. Then my rabit self fell into a hole. I jolted and woke up.

  11. Hi: I've known for a long time that I'm not part of any gender. I'm *not* part of any of the following groups: 1. Male 2. Female 3. Intersex 4. Hermaphrodite However, I'm trapped in a body that society defines as "male". Despite my genderlessness, I do NOT at all want to go through any gender-related surgery. I have the following strong beliefs: 1. There is more to gender than simply "male" or "female" -- [for example I don't feel like I'm male or female]. There are hermaphrodites, non-gendered persons [like me], intersexed, etc. 2. Genitalia does not determine gender [i maybe male "down there", but my gender is anything other than male, female…

The French saying "L'appel du vide" or in the literal English translation "The Call of the Void" presents the inexplicable desire to kill yourself or to think of killing someone at a particular moment. "It is however, a feeling common enough that studies have been dedicated it" - Kara Goldfarb, assuming that almost every person has felt these thoughts at least once in their life, and they last very briefly, only a few seconds. Once the thought passes, the man becomes aware of and expels himself from danger. However, the "call of the void" should differ from suicidal tendencies and aspirations because they do not have emotional stress, but come spontaneously and are …

  13. This is sort of vague, but what I'm looking for is examples of types of "cognitive behavior" where people are trying to accomplish something in a way that, on the face of it, appears to have some logic to it and make sense, but in practice is not the correct way to "cognitively behave." I know that sounds vague, but a perfect example of it is the pleasure paradox. This is a well known one that many people have commented on. The pleasure paradox is, of course, the idea that if you want to be happy (or have pleasure) you should do things that give you pleasure or you should aim to do things that are fun or that should make you happy, so this makes sense on a certain lev…

  16. What does consciousness consist of? Sensations, thoughts, memories, ideas and emotions. The defining characteristic of any ‘thought’, whether it be an evaluation, intention, fancy or whatever, seems to be its mode of representation. What is common to all thoughts is that they are represented either as (i) imagined sensations, or (ii) silent words. Yet silent words are actually imagined sounds. Thoughts, therefore, are imagined sensations. Yet delcarative memory actually consists of imagined sensations as well. The same can be said for ideas, which are represented as pictures, sounds or words in our minds. As pointed out already, these are all imagined sensations. We h…

  17. Hi Yesterday I took a 350µg LSD tab obtained from a trusted source on Tor I didn't sleep since like 10 hours, then took the tab, after like an hour the effects started getting felt I'm used to stay laying on my bed in the darkness, listening to music using noise canceling headphones, the kind of music like Clozee does I didn't take some since like 6 month, I don't drink, neither smoke and such At some point I felt better than usual, I felt like I hear much more the music details I started thinking about what would be connecting everything, then I thought the last barrier to understand is to break the time/go beyond it. Then in my …

I have a problem. When my daughter was born there was NEVER (not an exaggeration) a time when she didn't need comfort/picked up. She spends 90% (not an exaggeration), of her time sreeching and wrything around like she is in pain. When I made her pediatrician aware of this he said it's a phase that she'll grow out of eventually, just make sure she is not hurt/wet/hungry/bored/lonely or psysically annoyed (tight clothing, hair wrapped around toes etc...), then if the sreeching continues to put her down and let her cry it out. She is now 15 months old and it has not stopped, in fact her behaviour has become more dangerous and alarming. Now she hits people including herself …

  20. Okay ive tried a couple drugs like acid once and a few other drugs. When your on these drugs, your perception of time is slowed down. and with other drugs it's sped up. Now this is what happens when your brain reacts to certain drugs. now what if that means, our brain controls our perception of time. if anyone here has ever been in a fight, or had an big accident or fell off a bike. sometimes, time just slows directly down.. like impossibly slow, if time was like that an hour would feel like weeks. that means time is merely a perception. Now our brain is amazingly advanced. what if time was constantly fluxuating, moving back in time forth. constantly moving minutes, …

---The following is a personal breakdown of how a choice occurs. I use it in discussions to prove points and wish to have it analyzed by as many individuals as possible to point out any possible errors. ---You will have to excuse my posting style, but I prefer to use the “---“ to show a tab/where the opening of a ‘paragraph’ has started (just following the teachings of basic English usage {and yes, I know that I will make obvious errors, so point them out if necessary}) and should anyone have knowledge of how to properly insert a blank space to replace the dashes, I would appreciate the information. My posting style also includes multiple and seemingly synonymous word…

  22. For some background knowledge, please read these: 1) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_period 2) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_Period_Hypothesis I've been considering something for a while. I have considered that if people are to lead a life focused on a specialty, a type of life-career (say biologist, computer scientist, etc..), then they should be trained to be such at a young age. A form of technical training. Why? Why should we ignore teaching them particular fields, such as history, art, and so forth? Because of the critical periods that come across in people's lives. So, let's say people are most prone to learning and becoming specialized …

  24. [see attached diagram picture to this post] I developed a diagram of human psychology and its fields in a big picture based on my perspective / perception of human psychology. It shows how each group and / or field relation / entail by or to each other. I personally do not know much about human psychology, tbh. Except the relation / relationship between fields was on my mind for a while now. I felt compelled to develop it in order to see what it looks like in a big picture manner. It is a part of my misc / hobby activity. I thought you guys might like to see it, if not then fine. I figured maybe the goal is to learn or gain a different perspective of human …

  25. I had some time this summer to work on my previous research on diet, stress and homosexuality, so I put a revised, extended paper "A diet-stress-diathesis model of homosexuality" on PsyArxiv: https://psyarxiv.com/bjxvs/ The paper analyses in detail how the attribution of sexual arousal to a cue, courtship, thrusting reflex and orgasm get affected in homosexuality. The mechanisms of how addiction, brain inflammation, testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, diet and stress affect the phases of the sexual response cycle are discussed.
