Hello everyone, randomly thought of this question when I got one of these- a mind blank. What causes them? I asked my biology teacher and he said that "it is caused by hormones made when you are stressed eg adrenaline, epinephrine and cortisol that affect your ability to remember things properly. These chemicals muddle up the brain." He also suggested that I put the question on here as a final discussion. Before I got this answer I thought that it is something related to chemicals blocking memories or chemicals blocking cognitive function which is essentially the same as the answer. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Live long and prosper.

During hallucinations and near death experiences, you can experience certain experiences and mental states you had in the past. These experiences and mental states can be brought back to you during a hallucination. But can this also include the altered and strange mental states we experienced in our dreams and nightmares? In nightmares, for example, you are able to experience these completely altered mental states which are horrible. There is no way to describe what they are like. They are entirely new experiences unlike any other. So I am wondering if these mental states can also be brought back during a hallucination/nde. I am wondering if these mental stat…

I'm reviewing for an exam and ran across a question that has me rather stumped. I tried simply applying the Nernst equation but it seems I'm still missing something importantn "An electrically excitable cell with a resting potential of -70mV the following conditions are present (temperature is 37°C): Intracellulär Extracellular K+ 160nM 5mM Na+ 20nM 140mM Cl- 10nM 120mM Ca2+ 100mM 1mM 1. When the cell depolarisering [Ca2+] rises to 15uM, while the membrane potential reaches +61mV. Under these conditions , would Ca2+ move Into or out of the cell? 2. Which way would Na+ move? 3. Which way would K+ move if Na+ were …

Is it worse to experience an intense negative emotion in a nightmare or to experience that same emotion at the same intensity while awake? Does being fully conscious somehow make the emotional experience worse? Or would both emotional experiences be just as bad?

Hi everyone, i am studying in the field of neuroscience and my goal is to do research with fMRI. However, I am also going to need surgery soon and a piece of metal will be implanted in my jaw. Is there anyone who knows whether this could be a disadvantage working with fMRI? I am aware that I would not be able to be a subject in the scanner. But what about entering the fMRI room, setting up and these things? Sorry for the silly question. But maybe someone can tell me whether it would really be a disadvantage. Thank you in advance!

I want to buy an EEG device (used one, but in a good order). And need an advise. I'm looking for a something under $1000 price range, but they are more expensive, commonly. I just need a device which could make a difference between a common sleep stages such as REM, NREM (stage 1, 2, 3, etc) etc. I don't need some complicated analysis. I will be satisfied if it could be connected to a computer. Also, I would be glad with EEG device which could be connected only to those parts of head with no hair (brow, temples). Could you explain why EEG devices are so expensive? By idea they should cost no more than a portable FM radio. They just convert electric impulses to a readab…

This question may sound a bit irrational. But, I need to clear the air first. I suffer from a severe case of Obsessive compulsive Disorder. and I worry about the most simple things, however, benign they may be. And, I also Smoke. And I shouldn't be smoking, its bad for health..blah..blah..I know that...but I need Answers to this Question from an anatomical point of view. I don't need any personal suggestions. So, the question is that, I probably got a lighter flame inside my external nares, while lighting a cigarette, my friend was holding the lighter, and he tilted it a bit, and the flame was set to high length..So, it got into my nose. Now, I feel perfectly fine…

  15. People who have had ndes are said to have life reviews in which they see and feel every moment of their lives. Now I am going to ask a question here. If, for example, someone has struggled with depression in his/her life, but has completely gotten over it in which he/she can no longer experience it anymore no matter how hard he/she tries to, then how can it be experienced again during a life review? If he/she has completely gotten over his/her depression and can't ever experience it again, then how can those depressive feelings be experienced all over again in a life review?

Hello. Is there a way to make the spinal column longer, based on current level of scientific knowledge? There is a way to make legs longer but it involves breaking the bones and then separate the gap by 1mm each day. It is expensive, painful, lengly and skews body proportions a lot. There is some talk of joint loading as a method of stimulating bone growth but I know nothing of spine.

Has anyone here ever truly thought about how we exist, how we are self aware. When i think about this deeply, i realize something thats very strange, atoms. we are all made up of atoms, tiny ball like atoms.hypothetically speaking, if you were to separate and isolate a single atom, would you have the reason to believe that this atom is conscience and is aware of its self? Probaly not. how ever, if enough of these atoms come together, in just the right way, they create a being that is intelligent and self aware, humans.when i think of it like this, it all seems to insane to be reality. But yet, here we are. so essentially, we are all just trillions upon trillions of these…

  21. I get a feeling somewhere in my brain that this person I've known in the past is at a location that is more than a couple hundred meters away and they end up being there when I go check right away. I also have never spent time with them at this location. Anything in neuroscience that would indicate this being possible?
