Can anyone verify if the following statements are scientifically accurate? I'm writing an article and would like to verify before I begin spreading the word. Is it true that the various regions of the brain are interconnected by three networks (default network, task network, control network)? To oversimplify for the average reader, could these networks be compared to a light switch (the task being our "on" mode, the default being our "off" mode, and the control acting as the switch itself, moderating between the two)? The default network is associated with sense of self, often referred to as the selfing network The default network and the task network are anti-correlat…

  4. Dr Luther “The effect of songs and music in anesthetizing the nerves is stronger than the effect of drugs.” Moreover, Professor of Columbia University, Dr. Wolf Adler says: “The best and most fascinating tunes of music leave the worst kind of effects on the nervous system of humans and on their blood pressure, and especially when the climate is hot; then the unpleasant effects are too much. Indeed, music exhausts the nervous system in the human body because of being electrified by it.” "The two major divisions of the automatic nervous system are called the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems." Sympathetic nerves leave the middle regions of the spinal cord…

  5. As it's known, the brain is a biological electric device. It operates using weak electrical signals... which is how it stores information, makes connections and sense out of things, activates certain muscles, and everything else involved. The more a part of the brain is solicited, the more neural activity can be seen there, making it clear how relevant electric signals are in any conscious process. With this understanding, I've been wondering about a less common possibility; Can strong electromagnetic fields disrupt the brain, as they disrupt any electrical device? For example, could an EMP weapon knock someone unconscious, cause loss of memory, unwilling / uncontroll…

  7. Hello, I am asking this question in reference to a traditional 3-lead ECG/EKG setup, where the leads are located at the RA, LA, and LL positions. How much can you vary the placement of the RA, LA, and/or LL leads and still get an accurate Lead I/II/III signal? For example, I know that many systems will place the "LL" lead in the left abdominal region instead of actually on the "left leg" and still produce a reliable signal. But what if the LL lead is placed more to the left, or more to the right? What tolerance is there for these variations in placement?

  9. Hi: I'm looking for a parasympathetic-stimulant -- in the form of a pill -- that: 1. Has minimal side effects 2. Has minimal withdrawal effects 3. Has minimal rebound effects 4. Not addictive -- physically or psychologically 5. Does not lose effect over time 6. Immediate-release 7. Fast-acting yet with persistent intended effects [i.e. treating hypertension] 8. Most potent 9. Highest concentration of the active ingredient in the pill This active ingredient in this pill should have ultimate effect of treating hypertension by directly stimulating the neurons in parasympathetic nervous system. This will, in turn, signal the heart to slow down and result i…

In a prior discussion on the theory of everything, Genecks questioned whether or not consciousness is reducible. Although Genecks resolved it was not, it was a fascinating question that garnered few responses, which I though we might engage further here. If I understand correctly, Genecks views existence as a manifestation of consciousness and posits the non-existence of gravity without consciousness as an example. Rather than in the Theoretical Physics Forum where this discussion originated, I believe a thread here in neuroscience might yield more substantive discussion of this question. As the only testable example of a true consciousness producing structure, the h…

I am currently writing a book on neurophysiology. I have completed a first chapter (which is not chapter 1) which is entitled "Action Potentials, Voltage-gated Ion Channels and Concentration Gradients in Nerve Cells". The chapter was peer reviewed for grammar and continuity, however; I am having difficulty knowing where to submit the chapter for a technical review. I am not sure if this is the proper place, but it seemed like a good start. Can anyone here help? I have attached a zip of the pdf in case anyone can help. The target audience are those that have completed a semester or two of physiology and chemistry. If this is not the correct place then please excuse m…

So for Nerve Gear i was looking into brain mapping but couldn't get a definitive answer so have we fully mapped the brain i mean 100% i did saw a article where he was stating that the brain was mapped almost but there were some errors because he was tearing the brain.

  14. Hi I know you know the anatomical terminology well and use it well. I have a little confusion regarding the term flexion. I have read https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anatomical_terms_of_motion#Flexion_and_extension It says "Flexion ... decreases the angle...Extension is the opposite of flexion, describing a straightening movement that increases the angle between body parts" I am clear on the directions of the arm in shoulder flexion and shoulder extension as they're mentioned in this pic http://i.stack.imgur.com/bOrtx.png So the most shoulder flexion would be arm raised high, based on that picture. So all agree on direction, but if I look up degrees of sho…

I have read a couple of articles (for example http://www.kean.edu/~jfasick/docs/Spring_09_AP-1/Chapter%2014.pdf and others that I cannot remember the URL) that state that the autonomic nervous system is composed of motor neurons while alluding that the ANS does not contain sensory neurons. Then there are other articles that state that the ANS is composed of both motor and sensory neurons (http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/BiologyPages/P/PNS.html. Also this wikipedi page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomic_nervous_system#Sensory_neurons) describes sensor nerves in the ANS. Which is correct? John Springer Also the first paragraph of this article http…

I don't know if this is the place to ask this, but seems as good as any. I had trigeminal neuralgia, 4 years ago. it didn't disappear, but got an operation to kill the right lower part nerve of my face killed. I took that option because I heard that there was no cure but just to control it. my question is, has there been any advance in neuroscience or nerve knowledge that have found what causes the neuralgia and how to fix it? because, investigating about the medicines I used to take (carbamazepine, etc) they know it can be used for neuralgia pain, but it said they didn't know exactly how.

I had a heart attack about eight weeks ago. There was an occlusion (blockage) in one of the arteries of the heart which supplied oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle and I crumbled. After an operation which was apparently successful, I have been told by doctors, colleagues, relatives and friends to reduce stress. However, as a Science teacher in 21st century England, life is stressful. As a parent, it is stressful. My complicated personal life is stressful. How on earth can I relieve the stress using a natural method? I have heard about breathing techniques etc... but how would logical, rational beings on the Forum cope in a natural, pill-free way to re…

I have read that the brain, in some regions of the brain, like the hippocampus can repair itself and grow new neurons there. But does neurogenesis happen in the cerebrum? I have been beaten up and bullied my entire life, as a result, I fear I have lost many neurons due to repeated head traumas.

A thought occurred to me the other day, is it somehow possible for an individual to suffer a minor stroke that doesn't manifest any noticeable symptoms? If so, would there be any actual indication that this person had a stroke at all? (Please note that this isn't intended as a request for medical advice, merely an academic curiosity. However if the moderation staff would prefer not to have this topic due to the risk of unsolicited medical advice, then I understand.)

I've been thinking about pursuing an education in neuroscience for some time now, whether this be purely self-education via the internet, books, and seminars, or a formal education. I was wondering if there are any good books on neuroscience out there for the layperson? I'm mainly talking about popular science books written for the general, lay reader, and not technical textbooks, etc. I was wondering if there may perhaps be some comprehensive books that skim over the broad history of the field and are written to be interesting or entertaining to the reader? These are the types of books I try to start with before really delving into the topic. I'm sorry if this is asking …

  23. Are there computer games or games for the ipad that improves short term memory? Or are these gimmicks by game makers to make money. What I mean by term memory? Is when you work at call center and some one calls in telling you names and phone numbers and you not alway just one minute, allow me to wtite it down or saying can you repeat or low down. You can just take in that information or write it down later. Or is short term memory and attention processing speed cannot be inproved it base on genetics or how your brain was born? Some people can take in lot of information and other people have to write every thing down and the information has to come in slower b…

I am investigating whether or not “excessive alcohol consumption can be damaging to the liver”, and need you guys to email me some ‘answers’ to this ‘question’. My email is: stevensaeedi@gmail.com My name is Steven, I am a first year biomedical sciences student. I am currently doing a project on the human liver. I am investigating the notion that “excessive alcohol consumption can be damaging to the liver”. It’s fairly simple, nothing too complicated. I thought a good place to start would be to ask …
