  1. We can start with good sheep brain dissection for basic neuroanatomy http://academic.scranton.edu/department/psych/sheep/newsheep/practice/ And a nice compilation of lectures http://www.utdallas.edu/~kilgard/lectures.htm More to come If there is interest for discussion

Whenever I drink water I get a stomach ache, sometimes it makes me nauseous or I feel like throwing up. My family swears up and down that it's probably all the milk I drink and that I'm probably some form of lactose-intolerant, but milk never makes me sick or hurts my stomach it does nothing but make me feel better when I drink it. I felt dehydrated last night and nor pop or milk or gatorade was quenching this feeling, I felt like I was missing something you know and it was making me not feel very good. So I figured I needed water and I got a bottle from the fridge and started taking some drinks. I don't like the taste of water so it wasn't a grand experience. Within minu…

  3. Hi, I started lucid dreaming a few months ago. I got my first 3 lucid dreams on 1 night without using reality checks, but then I started to do it. The first time I tried it I tried to push my finger through my palm in my dream, which DIDN'T work, right after that I pinched my nose and tried to breathe, which DID work so I became lucid. This month I have done 5 reality checks in total in my dreams and it didn't work anytime :(. When I'm awake and do my reality checks I do it in this order: Looking around and see if I can see anything unusual. Looking at the time 3 times and see if it changes. Try to do telekinesis. Pinch my nose and try to breathe 3 times.…

  4. Since about 8 years ago I have been occasionally experiencing the sudden appearance of a bright blue dot in my vision. The frequency with wich it occurs also varies: sometimes I see them a few times a day, sometimes not for weeks. It is not longer present than 2 seconds and is not moving, even if my visionfield changes (= even if I look at something else). Also, they appear in different surroundings: regardless of lightintensity and coloursetting. They can appear with a background of a white wall in daylight, as well as in dark with different coloured background. I've never experienced a pressure on my eyes or head when it happens. In other words, I haven't discovered a c…

I have spoke to a few people about the color of peoples eyes after death. It has been said by a few people that the eye color changes. One person said why is this. The best half theorys I can come up with is the loss of Pigments and the draining of the small amount of blood in the eye. anther was that maybe if the eye had two tones the domenent color would remain? I am guessing of course. I would like it if anyone else has any information on this subject

  6. I've looked on sites the internet, but haven't been able to find out about these little darting specks of light that I see when I look up towards the sky. They don't appear to be in the sky, but are more like somehow produced in the actual eye, as I believe they move with the movement of my eyes. They're not "floaters", as they look very different to them (much brighter, for starters). I've never noticed them when I've been indoors, so I think that bright natural light is a factor. So, kind friends, can I ask a few questions of anyone willing to answer any of them, and maybe help me out? : -Firstly, and most crucially, does anyone know what they are? -Do you see t…

I am a 40 yr old female with a sudden craving for chemical smells. I don't know where this came from, but for some reason I'm severely craving smells. I can watch a commercial on household cleaners and my mouth just waters! I don't get high from the smells. I am not pregnant and I do not do drugs. I just can't get over this sudden urge to sniff everything that has harsh chemicals in it. I went to a tire store the other day to smell the tire showcase. I would drink Pine Sol, but I know it would hurt me. I want to eat dirt and love to get behind old trucks leaking black exhausts!! What is this all about?! I'm really concerned about this. I haven't resorted to eating any of …

Are you able to blur your vision whenever you like and for as long as you want, to switch from sharp to blur in a second at your own command? this involves the conscious control of the ciliary muscles which are in charge of the auto focus of your vision. The talent involves neurosensory and neuromuscular pathways and controls. I would like to know your opinion as I have been asking to several research institutes and it seems the ability is not really known, only few people can do it naturally did you know about this?

Half genuine curiosity and half WTF?!ness, does anyone know if there is any physiological effect to rubbing Vicks VapoRub into the testicles/scrotum? For instance, does it have any effect of sperm and general semen fluid production, either by decreasing or increasing the rate of production? Anyone have any other thoughts/feelings or insight into the idea, either from a physiological or even a purely sexual point of view?

I've long been curious about what pain actually is. Yea, I know physical pain is caused by nerves sending pain signals to the brain in response to tissue damage, etc. But once it gets to the brain, what is it? In other words, how does animate matter manage to torture itself such that the being that is the emergent phenomenon created by the magic loom feel agony (for a good purpose)? Maybe I should take this to the philosophy section. Any ideas?

Okay, I need to preface this post by stating that yes, what I did was stupid and I probably deserve the consequences. A bunch of buddies bet me $50 that I couldn't jump over a two-foot high recycling bin. (They were a bit intoxicated at the time). Seeing an easy opportunity to win $50, I took them up on the bet. As I was approaching the jump, a bottle fell out of the bin and landed right where I was going to plant for my jump. When my foot landed on the bottle, my body gave way and I fell forward. My face made an impact on the side of the bin and the concrete pavement. As a result, I have some pretty nasty bruises and abrasions over my right eye, on the bridge…

  13. It all began 20 years ago when I decided it might be fun to understand how Consciousness occurs in the Brain. I decided that Conscious sensory perception, specifically Light and Sound, were the things I would study. I can see Light and I can hear Sound. I eventually narrowed my studies to the Visual Experience. The thinking was that if I could understand more and more how the physical Brain, Eye and Ear actually worked then the Conscious perception of Light and Sound would become obvious. That was naïve. The Brain Physiologists have become pretty good at finding the Neural Correlates of Consciousness but they have hit a brick wall beyond that. Unfortunately, that was my c…

  14. Ok, so I was wondering what makes a coma different from being brain dead. I always thought brain death was just a poetic way to describe the condition of no brain activity - although I'm sure something is going on. And I thought a coma was the same thing, neurologically, except for the implication that the individual will eventually come out of it. So what is exactly going on? How come we don't consider a coma to be temporary brain death?

And what would be the simpliest possible diet that would sustain a human indefinately? Also, what if anything am I missing from my last weeks diet? I'm thinking theres not much iron and maybe vit A in there. Guess its steak and carrots tomorrow lol.

Hey all, People often tell me that drinking lowers your IQ. And that if you drink regularly, it will be a permanent effect. I even remember a biology teacher once telling a class this. Do you think that alcohol consumption has any permanent effect on intelligence? Can you drink heavily for say, 5 years, and still have the same IQ once you stop? I wonder if there's any research to shed some light on this issue.

  20. Can eating hot food (by this I mean high temperature, NOT spicy) cause upset stomach? I'm asking this because I've been told after eating a "hot" meal to drink lots of water because the hot food may upset my stomach... I've never had an upset stomach from eating hot food so I'm not sure why or how it could even cause any problems with my stomach (the food isn't too hot to begin with as I'm able to chew it and swallow it without pain).

I recently heard someone giving a speech on the brain and they said 'there are more connections in the brain than atoms in the universe'. I started to think about it and i can't get my head around it becasue surely for a connection at the very least 2 atoms are needed, therefore there can't be more connections than half the number of atoms in the brain. Anyone know if what he said was true or is he speaking crap??

  22. Hi, Well. This is for a story I'm writing. Sorry to be so "scientifically-shallow" in my motives If a person gets stabbed, concidering the fact most abdomen stab dangers are internal bleeding, how long can he survive without someone taking him to a hospital? What can that person do in order to prolong that survival time? I'd appreciate responses, even if it does sound a bit weird of a question.. Thanks guys ~moo

So today we were having a little debate about a rather gruesome subject: Is it really possible to kill someone by twisting their neck until it snaps? (Twisting in the same axis as you'd turn your head left to right. Presumably this would be done by grabbing the victim's head and turning. It's very popular in movies.) One person claimed she had asked her chiropractor and was told it was impossible. (I find this funny, as studies have shown the neck manipulations and twists chiropractors do can cause strokes.) I'm on the other side, as I seriously doubt such a twist would be very good for the spine. I just don't know if you can actually sever the spinal cord by twisting…

At the moment I've got a really horrible cold and have been in bed for most of the day, however there is a plus side as I seem to be sneezing every minute which I enjoy far too much. Assuming that i'm not the only one that finds it enjoyable, do any of you know why sneezing is so good. I have often heard people say that sneezing is connected to an orgasm but I can't find anything to back it up. I'm assuming that there must be some neurological reason i.e. release of neurotransmitters but can't find any info. Anyway, any of you know why?
