Just out of curiosity, if a CME was to occur. What would be the first the things to catch fire (if anything would)? Let's say in an average household, just to limit the possibilities. Also, why would they catch on fire? Thanks, LaGz

A paper from Jul 2013 'Stable Carbon isotopes of C3 plant resins and ambers record changes in atmospheric oxygen since the Triassic', available for free as a PDF, suggests that O2 levels were much lower than previously thought, and only about 10-15 % concentration in the atmosphere. This seems to go against the commonly held belief that higher O2 levels allowed Dinosaurs to grow to such large sizes. Volcanic activity was much higher in that era, the seas much shallower and CO2 concentration in the atmosphere 5 to 10 times higher than current levels; And, on the face of it, this seems an argument against RUNAWAY global warming, because global temps came down fro…

Hi guys, I'm writing a guide on Australian tourist destinations and have come across the claim that Mt. Warning on Australia's east coast is the first point to be hit by sunlight each morning. Google it and you will see that many websites, news articles etc have taken this as a given. I have heard a rumor that Point Lookout in the New England National Park could actually take this title, as it is higher, but not so close to the coast by about 70km due west. Mt. Warning (1,156 m or 3,793 ft) Point Lookout (1,564 m or 5,131 ft) I'm not educated enough to calculate the curvature of the earth to determine if this is correct or indeed false. Can anyone…

Hello, My question is why this is happening? There is a comment saying waters from Alaska's ices makes is density different and doesn't let water mix. But Alaska really far away to Mediterranean sea. And also is there a way that Muslims figured it out in 600? https://9gag.com/gag/azqrdLq (same video) https://img-9gag-fun.9cache.com/photo/azqrdLq_460sv.mp4

Say if Unicron (planet-sized evil transformer) came to Earth and lifted one of the tectonic plates. As in just ripped it off. Say, the smaller ones, Cocos, Caribbean or Scotia, gets lifted. Now, my question is what would happening to Earth, the the people watching a massive plate be lifted? Other than Earthquakes and death, what would happen? What about if one of the bigger plates gets lifted? Thank you!

I absolutely no nothing about science other than what I learn in my environment and man class in college. This people pn twitter keep sending me links to agreements again climate change. I believe climate change is real. I just want to know from real scientist or science enthusiast their actual take on it. I am over the paid people like Nye and Tyson or paid off scientists who goes against just because of their donors. I want honest feedback and studies from both sides of the agreement so I can be more informed. I want to understand both sides and real people real thoughts about it.

We have kind of a class debate tomorrow. There are two teams, one tasked to provide evidence supporting the protoplanetary hypothesis while our team was given the job of countering the said evidence. As far as I know, the protoplanetary hypothesis is, at present, the most widely accepted theory on the creation of our solar system. That, combined with the lack of substantial information about the topic online, makes our job incredible difficult. What parts of it lack concrete evidence to support the concept? If there is an explanation, what it is a highly debatable one? Thank you!

Hello, members. I've come across this science forum under a recommendation from some of my friends. I have still yet to see if your discussions contain viable content, regarding that I've only become a member recently. Moving on from that, I am an aspiring student who is interested in environmental problems that impact our world or countries socially, economically, etc. Right now, I'm focusing on the topic of weather modification (otherwise known as geoengineering physics) -- more specifically, cloudseeding. I have a google form with an article that summarizes my information, but I feel that it possibly needs more revision, or more areas to look into, like alterna…

Some or all of the seas and rivers we have on earth today , were once in another form, on, or around, previously existing Supercontinents. If I understand it correctly what is left of the Tethis sea is a band running down the Mediterranean sea across through the Persian gulf and across with India missing , ? But we need to go back further in time to the early Supercontinents. Mike

Hey everybody, newbie here. I am going on 38 and have a degree in IT back in 2009, I just lost my only job in the IT field and cant find anything else. I am having my mid-life crisis and I am totally lost and don't know what to do. I am going to get my CDL and drive a big rig. I leave this weekend for a CDL training which. I always liked geology and enjoy watching TV shows/documentary about it. I am a nerd, geek and movie enthusiast. I am thinking about going back to college for geology but just scared too because of money and not having a full time job for 4 years. I have some money saved up but really don't what to use it like that. Now if I would do trucking for a …

Our current usage of coal, oil , uranium and other resources , has given concern that we may be ' or rather are' in danger of stripping our store of energy reserves dry. With our current technology , and a lot of advanced thinking , It may now be , technologically possible to tap into the SUN's supply of energy directly , other than by earth bound solar panels. A project of this nature, is both beneficial for earths resources as well as employment in research & development and the ensuing, industrial engineering projects on an enormous scale , that would be , of necessity , involved. All this in addition to the new ' User' facilities whose need will ari…

Ok so im probably a huge idiot for even thinking this is probable and might just be too stupid to understand why this wouldn't work but theoretically couldn't we create a huge, wide crater in the ocean to decrease worldwide water levels?

I know how this sounds but listen to this... We have a full moon here tonight, was smoking a cigarette with my neighbor outside and during a 10 minute time span we saw a guy slap his girlfriend and her call the police and a bunch of kids get into fights between each other. Theres ambulances and police cars going back and forth for the last 3 hours outside. I would correlate these events to spring coming and getting a nice weather, people drinking, etc but...about a year ago I had two morons trying to climb onto my appartment window (I live on the 1st floor) so I treated them with my 15 thousand lumen HiD flashlight - they imediately decided not to climb anymore (the lig…

Anyone fancy some "light" reading? I have just finished this research paper and would love any, honest feedback. The theory is new although based on established research: the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs did not just hit the Earth like a nuclear bomb but was more like a bullet to the head: "The Earth Assassination Theory". Had some excellent pointers from a Nobel Prize winner but what is that compared to the forum. Earth Assassination Theory: Abstract The Cretaceous-Tertiary, or K-T, extinction event is the most widely known mass extinction event in Earth’s history due to its nom de plume “the death of the dinosaurs”. Occurring approximately 66 million ye…

I believe solar geoengineering activity is a source of air pollution/fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Long-term PM2.5 exposure is a public health issue. Is the public just poorly (dis)informed about the harmful effects of air pollution?

Gravity Simulator Although making some models may be hard and require a lot of work and time, this model will only require a little time but give amazing results. You will only need a few materials and this project can be easily put together to explain to others how gravity works. This simulator demonstrates how gravity from an object in space can affect other objects and the space-time continuum. Materials - A sheet of lycra or spandex (it can be bought at any fabric or craft store; large squares of this material work best) http://www.joann.com/sew-classics-spandex-knits/xprd892872.html#q=lycra&start=1 - A few marbles - One or more heavy round ob…

The depressing statistics of fires tells us that it is necessary to improve the fire extinguishing means and training of the population with elementary rules of the safe handling of fire. Especially dangerous and economically expensive, in today's time, are wildfires. They arise as a result of natural phenomenon, human carelessness and disorder. The suppression of such fires, as a rule, is a very difficult thing to do, especially in remote places far from concentration of fire-prevention equipment. In the path of such deadly fires are not only forests, but villages, settlements and cities. In the world there are today more than 220 countries in which …

If you didn't know already Yellowstone is a huge super volcano and if it explodes it could send the earth into another ice-age! But how??? Yellowstone will release A LOT of very harmful gasses. And why is this a problem? This is bad because the gasses are enough to block the sun and will turn the earth significantly colder and therefore an ice-age will occur SOLUTION: (We need to find out a way to "suck up" all the harmful gasses). I thought of an idea to make a HUGE VACCUM CLEANER type contraption but higher in the sky and on a very large scale ( >1km x 1km) and place these around the "borders of destruction" note: >1,000 OF THESE …
