How many (English) words can you (without AIs or SEs) think of that have no vowels ?

  2. I believe it would be the human race disappearing What would it be in your opinion? I imagine someday, someone, or a group of people, wiping us, it would be kinda sad, but i guess we can't deny that it would be for the good of our host and its other guests I guess that achieving that would be wisdom, and not doing it would be egoism One could say that achieving this would be like giving up*, betraying the others *But giving up on what? On more discoveries? entertainment? enjoyment? I guess by posting this thread, i kinda hope someone would change my mind, but i guess this is just how it is I will always prefer to be sad and afraid than lying to myself, i hope

Write the most pseudoscientific thing you have ever heard, I'll start: questionable link removed by moderator In case you can't see the text due to my crappy screenshot quality it says "There is a good reason that dinosaurs and space rockets are always in the kids section." This is under an Eric Dubay video explaining how dinosaurs don't exist and how the "Nephilim" are true fossils that have been destroyed by the government too make everyone doubt god. Pretty sure everyone could guess my response.

  4. Greetings. Has anyone here already; or what would it take to put together a rustic, magnetocaloric refrigerator using gadolinium, even if by manual cranking ? Gadolinium exposed to a magnetic field warms up; while In that state; does reversing the magnetic polarity changes anything, or removal of the field is needed ? Moving Gd into a magnetic field takes kinetic energy ? Removing it from a magnetic field also uses kinetic energy ?

I notice that several discussion forums have very recently been enjoying the 'benefit' of new members that are sowing cleverly worded misconception as answers to simple questions including some older threads. Has anyone else noticed this or noticed it here ?

Pop star Katy Perry recently went into space for about ten minutes or so in a Blue Origin space flight. When she got back, she acted just like this guy Howard shown in the clip below.

Greetings. Has anyone seen, had, known about a wind-up toy car of the sixties like the one I gave away in the seventies to a deserving kid and now as an old fart would like to have again ? Was a German Schuco brand, Mercedes Benz, convertible, green, wind-up, with a 2cm working stick shift between the seats, 2 or 3 gears, reverse, steerable, ~16cm, metal but cannot remember if diecast or tin, never seen an equal one for sale. The nearest looks image borrowed from the web (in other color) is: It is not these 'gullwings' :

Although I would guess that fewer than 1% of North Americans speak with a lisp, after living for 13 years in England I would have to say that about 10% of the people there speak with a lisp, often in such an extreme form that they are nearly incompwehensiboo. I wonder why a lisp is so common there but so rare elsewhere? One possible answer is that the English are psychologically fixated on the security and comfort they experienced as young children, and for this reason they subconsciously seek to reassure themselves by speaking baby talk all the time, the chief characteristic of which is a lisp. This is consistent with a documentary I once saw in England on differen…

It is not unusual, lately, to log on and the new Topics list is totally populated by Religious topics with the odd gender/sexuality related topic. Used to be Science related topics with the odd Political topic. I long for the 'good old days' when a science discussion would go on for many pages. Have 'our' interests changed drastically, or are we encouraging people who get tossed from other forums to come post their unwanted topics here ? I find myself posting less and less, as a lot of the topics don't interest me, and I don't think ( opinion ) they belong in a science forum. And I've noticed a lot of the more senior members doing the same. have ot…

Hello. Does it correspond to darkening degradation of pigments; is it related to lack of illuminated interiors of the times, or to focus attention to the intended image, or was it the background trend of paintings ? Seems once I read about 'cleaning/brigthtening' those centuries old artpieces with surprising differences revealing original colors. [Random dark images borrowed from the web]

Saw it somewhere and did not pay enough attention. Decided to try... Dissolved the gelatin packet, I did not heat too much as thought the alcohol would evaporate, so to the refrigerator went and did not 'set'. Gelatine cubes of gin and a piece of fruit (mandarin) suspended inside, but poor result . What went wrong ? Does it need boil hot activation ?

I have just joined Sam's Club in America recently to try to save money on things like gasoline, dog food, eggs and meats. I have found some good savings, but I don't like the notion that I must be forced to use my mobile telephone in order to transact business at Sam's or anywhere else. My phone is OK to summon an Uber ride, I guess. Sam's Club will no longer issue physical membership card to its members forcing them to be a prisoner of their phone. I had to have a gas station attendant show me how to use my phone to pump gas into my automobile. The Sam's Club app is about as difficult and slow to load into my Android 9 Moto E6 phone as the Walmart app. …

Is anyone else following the "drone" problem in New Jersey? I don't understand what all the hubbub is about. Nearly every video I've seen are obviously light aircraft, they even sound like light aircraft. Aircraft with landing lights! I have lived near an airport for many years and yes aircraft at night can look odd but I honestly do not see anything to this, it's all or at least mostly hype. It's concerning that many of these aircraft, whatever they are, have been sighted over restricted airspace like Langley air force base and so far I've not seen any videos of those "drones" but all the ones I've seen, in NJ, have aircraft running lights in standard configurations and …

It seems to me the new year should have started about 10 days ago, at the point when the days are the shortest. How did this day become the start of a new year? Also what is the point of having 12 months - why not just have four "seasons" each about 91 days long. Just random thoughts I guess.

  21. For American new-car market. No thrifty little Scout truck as promised. Tacoma truck prices ever soaring. Still no plug-in battery electric trucks. Of course, I don't want plug-in battery trucks until they can compete with fossil-fuels-burning trucks with similar load capacity, trailer-pulling capacity, highway speeds and range. The promised solid state batteries were supposed to make this a reality. We asked for it, Toyota, when shall we get it? Gladly, base-model gasoline Corollas have not jumped up in price for 2025.

  22. Wednesday it will be 25 years since the whole world was going to implode. Things haven't got all that much better. Did your school/job/family etc. have you jumping through hoops over what turned out to be a lead balloon? I got paid $200 over and above my regular pay for coming in and watching nothing happen for eight hours.

  24. I have a fairly high stress, high pressure, cortisol and adrenaline stimulating job with big clients and big money and big expectations. Working out and exercise help, as does awesome craft beer, but I’ve recently begun to get into woodworking. There’s a certain zen about it. I’ve got zero experience and even fewer coaches / mentors available to me. Like me, my pops was a corp software guy who grew up in NYC, so I’ve been watching YouTube for a couple of weeks and doing a bunch of trial and error this past month or so. One of my goals is to avoid using screws and power tools when possible (except the table saw, but no routers, pocket hole jigs, etc.), so I’m s…

  25. For while now, I've been slowly trying to learn Finnish, since it was the natural tongue of all my grandparents. However this isn't going to be strictly about that but abut learning languages in general. They often start by teaching you a few simple phrases, that may come in useful, (hello, my name is... etc.) One of those phrases is often along the lines of "Do you speak English(or whatever language you normally speak)? For example, in Finnish, this would be "Puhetko* englanitia?" After some thought, I realized that there is no real reason you need to know how to say this. If you were in Finland and wanted to ask someone if they spoke English, y…
