Are gender differences in personality traits mostly due to culture or biological differences? (Split from “choose gender option”)
Any physical or mental trait associated with a certain group will follow a Gaussian distribution ( bell shape ), with the 'normal' being the section between 5% and 95%. If you compare any specific trait between genders ( or even between what some call races ), you will find large and variable amounts of overlap between the two distributions. Say we are considering the trait of physical strength. There is a large overlap between the two distributions for males and females; some wimpy men are much weaker than a typical female, while some Russian female shot-putters are stronger than even football players, as examples. The 'normal' may almost completely overlap, but the extremes ( the 0-5% and 95 -100% ) will not. The two bell shapes are slightly ( or more, depending on trait under consideration ) offset. IE the differences between gender ( or the trait we call race ) are only manifest in the extremes.

Gun control, which side wins?
If I was a mailman in that area I'd be asking for danger pay. Shouldn't matter where the jury comes from, or where the trial is held. This kind of behaviour should offend/disgust anyone.

Why does Gorilla have small penis compared to humans?
My gorilla friend says... "Its not the size; Its how you use it." What, I'm gonna disagree with a gorilla ?

Voluntary Blurry Vision?
I can keep my vision 'blurry' far longer than any of you. So long, in fact, that it never goes clear. But I have damage to my optic nerves, artificial lenses, and astigmatism due to eye surgeries.

The more advanced missiles, such as the MBDA Meteor, a beyond visual range air to air missile with a range of 100km, and used by the customer nations of the Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale, SAAB Gripen and F-35 of the Italian Air Force/Navy ( demonstrably more advanced than the Raytheon AMRAAM ), uses a solid propellant inside of a ramjet duct. When the solid propellant used for acceleration is used up, the ramjet kicks in for sustaining and terminal maneuvering. Older designs lacked this ability and could be defeated by hard maneuvering during the terminal approach to the target.

Interesting Koti. We have an electrical room in one of our buildings with a Halon fire suppression system. We ( JHSC ) had it taken off-line because of asphyxiation risks.

Gun control, which side wins?
I'm making the argument that culture is also a factor in how we express our aggressive tendencies. And since America has a gun culture, AND plenty of guns, that is the usual way aggression is expressed.

Gun control, which side wins?
the assertion made by OldChemE that 'entertainment' violence leads to more aggressive behavior is certainly true. America has a gun culture, and this aggressive behavior is manifested through the use of guns for violent actions, simply because of the numbers of available guns. The argument put forth by iNow concerning Japan is not a valid one as they do not have a gun culture, or vast numbers of available guns. However if you Google 'Deaths by Samurai Sword in Japan', you will get multiple hits of attacks, murder, suicide and even mass stabbings/murders. The 'fault' for America seems to lie with that old, wild, wild west, cowboy culture.

Gun control, which side wins?
Yes, I would have a problem with four guns. But that's me. I had to wait a year and a half for the police to come and get a prohibited ( very short barrel/concealable, 22 semi-auto, Mauser,, probably last fired in the 50s ), that I found after my dad passed. Have no idea how he got it through customs when we came to Canada. But I do know some very responsible gun owners. Biggest problem I have with multiple gun ownership; If some of these guns go missing/stolen and are not registered in any way, are they not resold on the streets to criminals/gang bangers and used to commit crimes/murders ? Just the spill-over of American unregistered guns being re-sold in Canada is enough to cause gun related problems in cities like Toronto.

Gun control, which side wins?
I don't know, Stringy... Does that make the problem appear bigger than it actually is ? Or does it make it appear smaller ? ( why does any one need so many guns ??? )

Polyurethane foam - are they safe?
Yeah, you're right. We just shortened MDI to Methylene di-isocyanate, since TDI is Toluene di-isocyanate. ( cut me some slack, the last chemistry class I took was last year of high school, 40 yrs ago ) And, yes, we did use organic cartridge respirators for MDI, and supplied air in the rare use of TDI. I know of one person who became slightly sensitized and wasn't allowed to work with isocyanates anymore. I still work with him at my current place of employment where we make Phosphine ( much less dangerous ). His only symptoms were the allergic type, skin reaction. I did not know you could get respiratory problems from skin contact.

Polyurethane foam - are they safe?
My use of Methyl Di-Isocyanate was limited to liquids John. There was no aerosols or blowing involved, and MDI is not particularly volatile. Routes of entry were by skin exposure, not vapor inhalation. I assure you no joking was meant. ( although my jokes are usually poor )

Polyurethane foam - are they safe?
Haven't worked with Isocyanates for over 25 yrs. And it was MDI, not TDI which is more dangerous. All I remember from the MSDS is that it has a built in warning mechanism. In the case of low exposures, it is a sensitizer; so if you start breaking out in reddish splotches, get rid of any PU foam mattresses and avoid them in the future. If you don't break out in splotches, there is no appreciable exposure.

Is it ethical to view men and women as different?
Depends on the problem... Like, if you're trying to pee into a toilet/urinal that's 6 ft away. ( I am being sooo facetious )

Is it ethical to view men and women as different?
What is this thread about ? A bunch of guys bitchin' and whining like the women in the video ? Yes, men and women are different ( duuh ). Both have various degrees of strengths and weaknesses ( evolution helped with that ). The only problem is when one sex is considered better than the other

What is Space made of?
All depends on what you mean by 'quantum' Black Holes. A quantum sized BH, could have a huge amount of energy/mass. Assuming GR works to exceedingly small separations, then there should be no limits to the minimum size of a BH, other than extreme amounts of Hawking Radiation due to extreme temperature, and as a result, extremely short life of the BH. But we know that isn't the case. IIRC, intrinsic angular momentum ( spin ) conservation laws require that curved space-time has 'torsion' ( see Einstein- Cartan theory ), and this 'torsion' gives a minimum size to particles ( see Dirac's equation in a gravitational field ). IE, quantum effects modify GR to give a limiting size to BHs. A workable Quantum Gravity Theory will go a long way to clear up matters. The 'no limit' scenario would have made tiny BHs in the LHC ( as was feared by some ), but the 'minimum size' scenario means we need orders of magnitude greater energies than the LHC can provide in order to create tiny BHs.

IOW there is such a thing as debt... But there is no negative currency. Negative energy/mass only arises because of 'accounting' tricks.

That's right about the time large numbers of men started wearing briefs, DrmDoc. I just don't like 'things' flopping around, down there. And I don't need a high sperm count anymore, anyway.

Cats trained as spies, DrmDoc ? interesting but unworkable, I'm afraid. I don't see a problem with the black tux, Omega Seamaster or even the Walther PPK. But shifting gears in the Aston Martin would be a problem.

Philosophy, Science & Reality
I liked your simple explanation that, while science teaches us how to analyze the problem at hand, philosophy teaches us how to think about the problem at hand. Which sometimes guides the scientific analysis. I.E. it is not a useless discipline, but can be quite useful, if applied in the right situations.
-
Philosophy, Science & Reality
You haven't yet, Eise. As to philosophy... I used to think it was a useless discipline, and so, by extension, people who practiced it, did nothing useful. Does that clarify things ?

Sharia in the US
Ahh, but what if a state develops a mostly Muslim population through immigration. ( I know it still wouldn't happen because the immigrants are mostly trying to get away from that way of life ) And then somebody runs for election in that state to bring in some forms of Sharia law. I know its a lot of 'what ifs', but that is our system and is equivalent to an 'invitation to control our way of life'. Even Sean Connery had to agree to 'Never Say Never Again'. Swansont.

Sharia in the US
I usually bow out when Tar 'takes over' a discussion, but... That is exactly how Christianity developed, and I might add, the figure who sets the example of HOW we should lead our lives, is Jesus, in the New testament. You know, the 'turn the other cheek' guy, the guy who asked his Father to forgive his executioners. In all of the writings about him, whether real or fictional ( who cares, he is simply a symbol of what we should strive for ) he gets upset one time only, and upends the money-lender's tables in the temple. Now compare with the example set for Islam, by Mohammed. ( and remember that these are now actual historical records ) Mohammad starts preaching in Mecca ( a trading center for nomadic traders ), where he quickly runs foul of the law, leaves for Medina, and organizes raids on caravans travelling through Mecca to steal their goods. When he has amassed enough wealth and power he returns to re-take Mecca. And subsequently, also by the sword, all of the Arabian peninsula. in his name, and by the sword, eventually, to the west all of North Africa and the Iberian peninsula is conquered as far as the Pyrenees, and to the east, as far as the Punjab. Which 'example' should we be following ????? As for sharia law, in the Trump/Hitler thread I mentioned how a dictatorship could "never happen here" and was quickly corrected by Phi, Delta and iKnow, that I was making foolish assumptions, because it couldn't happen in Germany either, until it did ! So I'm going to suggest that Sharia law can't currently happen here. Until it just might !
-
Sharia in the US
Yes, one can ! The fact that it doesn't happen in the US does not mean it doesn't happen in parts of the World where it is ( even partially ) practiced. And I can post contemporary stories of whipping from those parts of the World also, while you had to reference History books for North American/European examples. No law should be based on religious beliefs, whether here or there. I think THAT we can agree on.
