Taking care of people
Human nature. If you consider the situation in our own particular countries, the situation applies to 'a small number who fail to manage themselves regardless', as we live in fairly affluent societies. Our ancestors, if they wanted to live apart from their tribe, and do whatever they wanted, ran the risk of being killed by a pack of wolves, or freezing outside of the cave. It is a modern notion that we should be able to do whatever we want, while still being afforded society's protection; sometimes actually demanding it. If shelters and food are available, should you be forced to accept it, or sleep outside in freezing weather ? There is also the situation, mostly do to wealth inequality, where a percentage of the population, in our countries, does not see the benefit of our economies, as most of the profits go to obscenely rich individuals or large corporations. This is not as much a moral issue like the previous, but has some systemic element. If we tax rich people and corporations much higher and they go 'off-shore', are we prepared to have more social services, but less jobs ? This same issue is also evident on a global scale, where our desire for cheap goods, causes corporations to move production to countries where they can take advantage of cheap labor, and steal their resources. So while we provide to their economies in the form of employment, a lot of the profits are funneled back to the large corporations' shareholders. Are we providing employment opportunities, or simply taking advantage of cheap, sometimes child, labor ? There are also the cases of impoverished countries where we used to send 'aid' ( yes, I'm looking at you America ), but their rulers use that 'aid' to fund weapon purchases, to control their population, and keep them ignorant. If we cut off aid maybe the people rise up and overthrow their dictators, but millions die; is it worth it ? These, and others I haven't mentioned, are all different issues, and are getting worse, not better. they require differing mitigation approaches, but because of human nature, these issues will never be eradicated; they don't even seem to be improving.

25 % !!!
Apparently Europe has hit a milestone in the month of June. It is reported that Europe got 25 % of its energy from solar in the month; an increase from 10 % five years ago. Mind you, the situation is not as rosy in the winter, because A/C is not a big energy load in European summers. Mean while the US is attacking Iran ... again, in an effort to re-open the Strait of Hormuz, and get oil flowing again to save its reserves. How is that for clear-headed planning. I like this girl. Born in the Vatican, spoke Latin as a little girl, and PhD in Computer Science. Her analysis provides my daily vent against all things Trump/MAGA/Republican.

FIFA, World Cup, Trump and corruption (split from MAGA - Make Algae Green Again)
The game is fine if played by the rules, refs aren't biased, FIFA doesn't play favorites, Presidents/Governments don't get involved, and people don't try to change it. It has become the most popular game in the World for a reason.

‘The Odyssey’ - Which Translation ?
First time I ever ran across a copy of it, I was maybe 5-6 years old, and it was in a foreign language that I assumed was Latin, but it may have been Greek. I was already familiar with the Iliad, the Odyssey and Aeneid, courtesy of a classical Italian education system ( those were our 'fairy' tales ). I later watched a serialized black/white version on Italian TV ( about 1967 ), and to this day, I vividly recall the Cyclops ( Polyphemus ) eating Ulysses' men, blinding him after he was drunk, sneaking out under the bellies of the sheep, and the trickery with the 'nessuno' name ( Italian for 'nobody' ). Being 7-8 years old, I couldn't sleep for weeks.

Thermodynamics of the Gravity from Entropy Theory
I wouldn't go that far. It just happens that the best model we have for gravity is geometric. If you look up Kaluza-Klein Theory you will find that it utilizes a hidden/curled up 5th dimension to merge Einstein's GR with Electromagnetism into a consistent, but classical, geometric theory. ( electric charge is the 5-velocity component along the 5th dimension ) First proposed by T Kaluza in1919, then refined, with Einstein's approval, by O Klein in 1926. See here for a clearer explanation Kaluza–Klein theory - Wikipedia This was, of course, before the advent of QM ( which introduced difficulties with the predicted mass of the electron ) and before the weak and strong/color forces were known about ( a geometric treatment of those forces would have proved unwieldly, if at all possible ).

FIFA, World Cup, Trump and corruption (split from MAGA - Make Algae Green Again)
Yeah, England did play some of the most exciting games, against France , Mexico and even the Congo game. Argentina turned out to be real sore losers ( other than L Messi ) even though they were thoroughly outplayed by Spain. 90 min without a single attempt/shot on goal ) I do think FIFA and the officiating were making 'excuses' for them throughout the tournament, and after their boorish display after the final, there was a 23M signature petition to ban them from FIFA, as of yesterday. ( they can always play with Russia )

The difference between Truth and Fact.
JD is always getting blamed for something or other ... ( so I switched to double oaked Woodford Reserve ) And now I can't get either since our Government is boycotting American booze.

Thanks again Markus. You certainly have a way explaining at an understandable level. ( you should have gone into teaching )

Thermodynamics of the Gravity from Entropy Theory
The question was If our statistical model was not valid for all conditions, would they be N-S compliant.

The Asteroid That Killed the Dinosaurs May Not Have Done It Exactly How We Thought
I would think the impact crater itself would have a massive amount of sulfur, but there would be a thin film deposited all over the world at strata corresponding to 65M years. Then again Sulfur 'melts at 115o and burns at 200o, while its dust is explosive, so what would atmospheric entry have done to this 'sulfur' asteroid if it wasn't mostly rock/metal ?

Thermodynamics of the Gravity from Entropy Theory
Interesting. At what point do you need to ask yourself whether gravity, the process, is a truly emergent process ( arising from some more fundamental processes ), or whether the model and its equations are what is emergent, as they are 'linked' and we know we don't yet have a complete model valid at all scales. IOW, if we only had a theory that was incomplete for general particle assemblies that accounted for compressibility, but not incompressibility, would the resultant fluid statistics still point to N-S emergence, since our initial assumptions did not consider all possibilities ?

Thermodynamics of the Gravity from Entropy Theory
Thanks Markus. Interesting(?) that, since Bekenstein-Hawking Entropy is assumed, we had to expect the obtained result. Somewhat circular, but I, and Exchemist, are puzzled as to why this indicates gravity may be emergent. Or am I misunderstanding you ?

You don't post much, lately, @iNow , but when you do, you still manage to communicate relevant and important points.

Thermodynamics of the Gravity from Entropy Theory
I find it hard to believe that classical Einstein equations could be derived from 'quantum relative entropy and its proportionality to an area variation'. I haven't read the paper ( if I could make heads or tails out of it ), but how do they manage the quantum-classical mix ?

The difference between Truth and Fact.
( sorry, looking up what a plover is ) Ahh! Smallish wading bird, that returns to signal Spring's arrival. Today I learned. You could also say "I have never seen a plover heavier than 60 gms. And it could very well be true. But it is a fact that "the weight of an adult ringed plover lies somewhere between 55 and 75 grammes"

T Tuchel is the worst manager. England had the momentum shortly after the half, during the Argentina game, and he elected to put in all defenders ( as he correctly had to in the Mexico game since they were down a man ). Argentina took the opportunity handed them, and kept shooting on net. They hit the post twice before eventually equalizing; it was only a matter of time. Then they put in the winner. In today's France game, M Rashford was playing brilliantly, and was involved in the build up to every goal except B Saka's penalty. Yet instead of leaving him on with Saka, Tuchel took Rashford out for the second half. Without any pressure from the wings, France was dree to attack, and made the most of it. It was only later that Tuchel decided to beef up the midfield by bringing J Bellingham on. Rashford, Saka and Bellingham should have been on the whole game ( H Kane who ? ), even though this was for 3rd place. The score would have been 6 - 0 . I'll leave it to you to decide which is true, and which is fact.

Hegseth wants gender affirming care for troops
Only under this administration. Armed forces are intended to provide defense of citizens and country. In civilized democratic countries they are not meant to wage war, but to defend against those that do.

The difference between Truth and Fact.
Lots. You don't give me enough credit. Agree. Other than establishing a standard for terminology, semantics are a reflection of the different uses of language, not differences in the science/philosophy they attempt to describe.

The difference between Truth and Fact.
OK. How does that differ from my opinion that 'true' and 'fact' are not equivalent ?

The difference between Truth and Fact.
Ah ! The 'hind sight' argument. The fact that it was a 'truth' at one time, tells of the variable definition of 'true'. Let me put it this way ... If we're ever in a discussion where I say something is 'true', you can question me, and the thinking that allowed me to arrive to such a conclusion. Even if I say "I don't know the value of Pi to 10 decimal places" that is a truth, as it may change once more knowledge is gained. If, in that discussion, I say something is a 'fact', you can look it up, or independently verify it. So, if I say "We can never know the exact value of Pi", or "We can't know the position and momentum of a quantum particle exactly", those are facts. They may also be true right now, but they were not hundred(s) of years ago. Facts are information, truths are feelings, like love/hate/etc, that defy definition due to theirsubjectivity. Edit: The above opinion is truthful, because, as I've stated, that is how I use the terms; it is certainly not a fact that every one does the same.
-
The difference between Truth and Fact.
I have stated that before; that is how I use the terms 'true' and 'fact'. All facts are true; not all truths are factual. You can provide as many facts that are true as you wish, but I only need to provide one 'truth' that is not factual, to make my point.
-
The difference between Truth and Fact.
I would think it is a fact that no one knows the exact value of Pi. But the true value of Pi, for me or @sethoflagos , might be 3.14159 or 22/7, while for Suresh Kumar Sharma ( Indian ) who can recite the value of Pi to 70030 digits, from memory, in 17 hours and 14 minutes, my value is very far from true. Different people have different truths; facts are the same for everyone.

Hegseth wants gender affirming care for troops
I think the only time he ever amounted to anything was in high-school. He has become a disrespected SoD, and a laughing stock; any capable Pentagon Commanders who haven't quit, he has fired. Maybe he's trying to re-live his glory days by acting like a high-schooler. He and his boss are in adirectionless war they started, and don't seem to be able to get out of, yet he worries about soldiers' appearance and 'machismo' ? So, vaccinations are to be discontinued, and steroid use mandated ? What could go wrong ? And will Testosterone be administered to female soldiers also ? I thought they had implemented rules against sex-change and DEI in the Armed Forces 😄 😄 . ( what a joke )
