  1. My first international conference, all paid for, and it's in dour Glasgow...

  2. If anyone, or anyone's kid(s), is planning on watching the second season of 13 Reasons Why, please note this warning for the last episode. There is a specific scene that concerns an important social problem in community, but is so graphical that lots of viewers were left shocked and aghast. Truth be told, I'm confident that we (members of this forum) ought to be intelligent and educated enough so that we need not be confronted with this scene for making us attent of this social problem in society. However, it was a really good series after all, and I enjoyed watching it. Except for that scene. It left me shocked, staring at a paused screen for about 15 minutes and I personally did not have any added value from that scene (38:24 until 39:49).

  3. I have been husbanding a small endangered fish for the last few months. I started out with about 12 of them and now I have  more than 12 dozen of them.

  4. Tried to rescue a Bee today...  I am way too soppy...  I fished it out of a pool of water that was probably alkaline due to the cement. I hope the little fella/girl is OK.  I put it on a leaf over the fence but it fell into the bushes.  It seemed to have some strength left in it so it might survive.  Just gotta leave it and hope it survives - it probably has more chance in the bushes than it did in the cement water.

I do this a lot with bees - I never know if they survive or not... some are just too weak. I have tried sugar solution in the past with varying successes and fail rates - Sometimes they tuck in and sometimes they are too far gone..

I guess every little helps.  :-(

They keep the living and dead insects cleaned up, catch flies and the only inconvenience is a bit cobweb clearing once a year when they get dusty and can be seen. They are unseen housekeepers. What they do when they crawl on you in the night is tasting you to see if you'll be worth coming back to when you pop your clogs. :D  Like I said, if they aren't in my way I don't care. I've had to kick two bats out in one place and kill 20 field mice in a week at one time... two of them were taking the mickey playing with each other like i wasn't there! I was a bit sad when my trap killed a dormouse though. The joys of living in the sticks.

They are harmless. Apparently, we mostly see them when they are looking for a mate.

House spiders can go up to 14cm, so, yeah, about a playing card.

You can make salt barriers where you don't want them to go. i've handled fish for any years, so other slimy, wet things don''t bother me. As long as critters are not getting in my way I leave them alone and that includes spiders in the house.

I must rush to the defence of the worm. Worms pull detritus into the soil and they aerate it and  keep lots of creatures alive as food. Moles would be pretty destitute without them. There aren't as many butterflies either. Or house sparrows.

I've picked worms up before off the pavement and put them on the grass and collected toads that are mass migrating on the roads on the estate where I live and taken them to a nearby lake.

Sorry, didn't realise the ambiguity of my post. I should have said "temporarily 'banned' " as in voluntarily so.

I do think the context was clear in your post that I referred to.

Why? Are we that bad. :) It's not possible because it would wreck the continuity of the threads.

Could it be a reflection on the popularity of the subject itself? I would imagine people like liddle puddy-tats more than science.  :)
