Im having a little trouble grasping a little maths that Cantor came up with. Its the one where you write every single decimal real number in a list, then you take the first decimal digit of the first number, the second digit of the second number in the list, the third digit of the third number etc. to get a 'new' number. you then change that number in a set way, and you have a completely new decimal. my problem is that although you have a number that has a different first digit to the first number, so its not the first one, and its not the second one, and so on, you will still have written every possible decimal real number, so how is it not in the list?

Hello, I have a somewhat-working familiarity with set theory, and have recently been reading (naively) about category theory and type theory, each proposed as potential autonomous foundations for mathematics. To someone who has a better-than-vague understanding of the three, what is the discrepancy or motivation for one over the other? Why isn't first-order or higher order logic considered the "foundation"? When considering set theory as a foundation, can all discussion generally be deferred to ZFC; for category theory, can it be deferred to the category Set or topoi; for type theory, can it be to homotopy/univalent type theory? I'll probably be taking math class at local college in my senior year. I know that the best way to choose class is to contact with the college's math department but I wonder what you guys think will be a good class to take. I know some NT, combinatorics, algebra, trig, geometry, and hopefully be able to learn some graph theory/invariant sometime in future before my senior year. I personally do not like calculus much so good tip? Also, if I take class at local college, will this go as a part of my regular transcript or count as "AP" type credit? Thanks.

Take a 2D enviroment that contains a straight line where the x and y coordanates of the two ends of the line are known and also the position of a car and the angle it is facing (7 values). The car moves forward in a straight line. Is there a simple, reasonably computationally fast way to work out if the car ever intersects (crashes into) the line? Would it become much more complicated if one of thease additional pieces of information was needed? either where did the intersection occur or given multiple lines which one was intersected first.

Hi everybody. For a long time I kind of perceived myself as a relatively dumb person as I often had pretty big problems learning math in school - and some other subjects too. I eventually dropped the school altogether and started learning computer programming on my own (and I've learned more of it than I would've in any standard school). But, some time ago, I discovered that I'm mostly a visual-spatial learner. and my learning problems seem to (mainly) come from the fact that I have hard time with the standard linear learning style which is used in schools.
