What's going on in the world and how it relates to science.

  1. Started by AlphaZNV,

Do you think the country is, evil (limit your bashing)? Not your average citizen of course, but the overall country itself. Many countries (especially in the middle-east) have been severely destabilised by strings of invasions, I recently read where Afghanistan refugees were "abused" in Iran (no specific information), which is targeted by a lot of human rights group, the refugees, is the product of the string of military invasions by the US, the real evil here, embedded in the masses of lies to justify the invasion and massacre of another country. The business of the US, I find interesting how their tricks have backfired on them (now deep in the debt cycle to China etc…

My question is what percentage of the population of Iran supports this? It seems than when the US is involved in nuclear negotiations with Iran, the US diplomats would ask their Iranian counterparts about this. In theory, extremists would gladly destroy entire "infidel" cities to make their point. True believers in Islam would rationalize that holy war should continue nonstop until the entire world is converted to Islam. Even Iran's supreme leader would believe this IF he is a TRUE believer in Islam. According to Islam it is ok to lie to infidels, which includes nuclear inspectors.

  3. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jun/06/nsa-phone-records-verizon-court-order This has been suspected for a long time, but never proved. The Supreme Court had previously ruled against plaintiffs who argued they had been subject to warrantless wiretapping on the grounds that they could not prove any such wiretapping exists; hopefully, this will change that. What also disturbs me is that the request was made by the FBI but the data is to be delivered to the NSA. Does the FBI believe there is some legitimate law enforcement purpose in collecting this much data? What else do they think they can collect?

Quoting this for easier access rather than linking to the thread it was in, where it was OT Good news! The ACA hasn't raped this person's future. In fact, because Ashley makes so little, she will be eligible for the expanded medicaid. http://www.theatlanticwire.com/politics/2013/10/good-news-obamacare-raped-future-26-year-old/70397/ Even if she chose to go with the insurance, it would not actually cost her $319 a month, because this little story ignores the tax credits you get. And, of course, all that assumes her job won't be providing her with health care. How to spot a fake Obamacare horror story http://thinkprogress.org/health/2013/10/31/2868631/ess…

When congressman Cruz was filibustering in congress to try to stop Obamacare, why didn't he get into the economic impacts of it? He had plenty of time to go into great detail WHY Obamacare will bankrupt the US. Here is my new congressional proposal. Whenever congress reaches a stalemate about the budget or similar issues, both sides should bring in their best economists and have the economists debate the issue. The debate will be moderated by a panel of economic EXPERTS. Then the winner of the debate gets the green light.

We're in a predicament. We are broke, we are unemployed or at risk of losing our jobs, and we are incapable of investing a large amount of money to get even richer. Most of us... all the people I know at least, are in debt. The people collecting our debt don't get the "denied" feature of taking out the money if it's not there. Our debt literally requires to be paid and will be paid even if the money is not there. Not only that, but the bank (my bank) charges a thirty five dollar overdraft fee for every overdraft. I saw a recent video about the wealth distribution. They said that they showed the actual distribution of wealth (which made me tear up), but I don't…

It can be said that in 2010 the Tea Party took the mid-elections. The question one asks is what role will they play in our next mid elect. To the dismay of our progressive and liberal friends at this site. I see a surge coming this next year. In fact I see a very big increase in tea party politicians. While it may not be prevalent within the Washington/Beltway view. Local and state politicians will increase significantly. This will happen even in states which you would not think it would occur. States like California, New York, Illinois. With a country that has many undecided points for our future. It is not a coincidence that we have fear of both the right and the le…

  11. The US government has shut down, because the only two political parties both could not back down enough to reach a compromise. As a result, nearly a million people are not going to work today. The 'shut down' may last a while. The previous one in 1995-1996 lasted 28 days. The Republicans (and Democrats?) publicly included the healthcare reform in the discussion about the budget, whereas to me it seems these are two separate discussions. I know that politicians try to reach all kinds of compromises, and that negotiations mean that one party gets its way on one issue, and the other party gets its way on another issue. Or, sometimes, a compromise can be reached. But to a…

  13. And oddly enough, Fox News is one of the few US "news organizations" carrying anything about it at all: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/04/05/video-appears-forces-firing-unarmed-suspects-baghdad/ Wikileaks site on the incident here Wikileaks is an organization reminiscient of the "data havens" seen in William Gibson and Bruce Sterling novels (or the CryptNet in Neil Stephenson) They provide a proxy organization between whistleblowers and other sources of information and the outside world, allowing people to release classified information without threat of litigation. Recently Wikileaks released a video apparently showing US soldiers gunning do…

  14. Long ago American colonialists protested British control of the American colonies: no taxation without representation! Last year on April 15th, a bunch of disenfranchised conservatives decided they felt the same way, except they're unrepresented because their candidates lost in a legitimate election. However, why not evoke imagery of colonial America? TEABAG THE WHITE HOUSE! Of course, given certain sexual connotations of "teabagging", the movement would eventually shed this label. I still enjoy it While this movement originally began as a populist uprising fundamentally rooted in libertarian principles of government, Fox News personalities, particularly Glen…

I have a dream. That one day Mankind will grow out of its infancy and peacefully expand into the galaxy. In order to ease that transition from type 1 to a type 2 Kardashev civilization I believe we need a society and form of government more up to task. As Carl Sagan once wrote "Our species needs, and deserves, a citizenry with minds wide awake and a basic understanding of how the world works." My goal is to design a better educated, more free, more involved, and more fair and just democratic society using the tools of sociology, psychology, political science, behavioral biology, philosophy, economics, and the knowledge of the past ten thousand years of human civilization…

  16. Republicans have shown contempt for federal programs they think cuts into private sector earnings or makes the government bigger, like FEMA, OSHA, the EPA and others. Typically, they'll put a political appointee in charge who has no credentials for the job, or remove the program's ability to regulate, and then later point to how bloated and worthless the program is. They don't believe in them so they don't try to make them work (which they magically do when the Democrats take them back). Since Reagan, Republicans have been responsible for the biggest deficits as well, cutting taxes to make the deficits even bigger. They push spending where it means large private secto…

  18. I think that the voting system is flawed, and that a lot of us will agree. So, I want to propose the idea of replacing it with a quiz system instead. My goal is to get this idea nationalized. Instead of voting (especially for the same redundant right or left who a lot of us know nothing about) why not replace it with a quiz system? It would be a much more efficient method of elections imo for getting what we, as a public whole, desire most. An example of the quiz would be a simple "Do you want to legalize x? Yes, No. Do you want the money to go towards y? Yes, No." I hope that we can change our system as soon as possible to this new proposed system for the greater good. …

  19. Dear all, I am curious about the consequences of the US government shut down. So, can you all please add some very concrete things that were shut down? The NY Times listed a number already. 1. At NASA, 97% of the employees must go home. Only the essential employees for the current ongoing missions are working. 2. National parks and museums are closed. (That must suck if you want to do some tourism)... 3. Here's one from the Netherlands: The Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial is closed (source in Dutch), and it graves are no longer maintained. It is the final resting place of over 8000 American soldiers who died in World War II. If the grass grows too …

She does a great job pointing out our Presidents incompetent foreign policy. http://www.philly.com/philly/columnists/trudy_rubin/20130901_Worldview__Parsing_a_U_S__response_to_Syria.html What is worse is that now he is claiming that he didn't set a red line on chemical weapons. Yet, we all heard him lay down that line. http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2013/09/04/201163/obama-i-didnt-draw-the-red-line.html#.Uidxoz-BV8E I don't think Obama will be able to pass the buck on this one. Without going in to conspiracies about "our government planning it"... This time of year keeps rehashing the story of 4 planes accomplishing what planes simply can not accomplish. But, aviation technology is kind of my thing. I have my degree on the subject, I'm federally certified, and I've been a professional mechanic for nearly a decade now.... And out of all that time, working for a couple "large companies".... I've never met a single member of the aviation community that believes that a Boeing 757 could have been at any of those crash sites.... Especially the pentagon one. Just wondering if there were people out there with basic training that still thought…
