Science Education

Colleges, grad programs, MCAT, GRE, courses, and other aspects of scientific education.

  1. Good day, ladies and gents. I am an Indian student of Electronics and Communications engineering currently studying in India. However, I wish to do research in a field of physics. I'm not sure at the moment of which one since the number of how many interest me is too numerous (however, if you would like to know I will add a list at the bottom). Even more than that, though, I wish to live and earn my income solely for the purpose of researching and learning physics, maybe as much as I can of my field and as much as I can of it overall. Unfortunately, prospects here are limited for further education and research. So I wanted to know how would I exactly maximize my chances…

Hi guys first time using the forum. So currently i am in my first year Computer Science at a small university Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops British Columbia. I am wondering if by attending a smaller university ( not that prestigues) if i am limiting my future job potential. For example from my knowledge, bigger companies such as Google (etc..) will hire from more prestigious universities such as University of British Columbia etc... Is this true? Or will i be able to achieve such after graduating from Thompson Rivers, i just don't want to be limiting my future job potentials because of my university. I know that to my knowledge the content taught between th…

Hey guys, this is a bit random, but I have this crazy dream of one day writing a science book for kids. It's always been one of my ambitions, but sadly it is very far from being a concrete thing at this point in time, but I realised that if I ever want this to happen, I need to first learn the first thing about publishing a book. So I was hoping someone might have a bit of experience with this - maybe if you or someone you know already published a book? I am not talking about a proper science text book, just a sweet book for kids to get into science. I mean this sounds silly, but how do you even choose your title? How do you decide on the cover? I just want to hear how ot…

So I dont want to take anything long term but there are many subjects I want to take maybe just a few units for. Is it possible to do that? or does that viod any money you get from loans? For example can I take a class of Psychology Philosophy English Basic Coding(IT) and maybe long term Law and business degree? Or is that not possible? Just it seems kind of a waste to have all these potentiol classes you can take but you cant take them since they dont fit your major. I was considering maybe doing medical, and going for Medical/Psychology, business and law and opening up a clinic. Like for mentally ill children.

I have been given a place at UCL (University College London) for an msc in physics and engineering in medicine. I picked it because I have 5 years accident and emergency experience and it seems like a stable career. However, it has an engineering stream and a physics stream and I have to choose one. Academically I'm interested in anything that I can apply maths to so I would find interest in either field. Therefore the choice boils down to quality of life, earnings, job opportunities and career progression. Which one would you recommend?

Unschooling is form of homeschooling where you set no limits on what your child does, you let them choose what they learn what they want to eat and when they want to go to bed.I am not in favor of unschooling. What do you think of unschooling? is this a bad idea? I am a little worried that one of my family members is going to raise their child unschooled. I dont think this is good for them and I dont think she is considering what is good for her child and the downside of unschooling. I am a strong supporter of learning science, I am really interested in science and I think that if I didn't learn it in depth I would have not gotten interested in it at this point in life. I…

  12. Whenever I finish my school work, I just head to our the library. Lately, I haven't been able to find any book that interests me or rather, having to read books with no supervision/direction from an experienced person is kind of...in-efficient?, confusing, and makes my head hurt a lot whenever I'm given a wide slection of books to pick from. I tried to looking for a mentor/instructor to no avail since everyone's busy. Enter online - I tried looking for mediums similar to youtube "how-to"/"tutorial" videos and stumbled upon Online courses, OERs, OpenCourseWare various other things. So far I've picked the Saylor foundation and Rice's OpenStaxCollege since they seem to f…

Happily, we get quite a few members who avoided a STEM curriculum in school, but have discovered a latent love for science that they want to feed with science discussion. That's the great part. Unfortunately, there's a lot of defensiveness about lack of education. It's a sore spot with many, probably because it's often equated with lack of intelligence, which is trivially false. But it IS a lack of knowledge, and that's something that can be fixed. Ignorant means you don't know, not that you're not capable of knowing. So how do you convince someone who's uneducated that you aren't saying they're stupid? I respect the desire to learn, especially science. I respect those…

I live in Scotland, so a lot of marine stuff going on there, but if I can't find a job there, I'll go wherever I must to follow my passion. Anyways, looking forward to haring from you guys.

  17. Lets say you dont have enough money to transfer out of state or country for your Major of choice. So you figure you will try a community school. Will community schools have stuff like Meteorology Microbiology Parisitology Engineering It seems that some majors are just very difficult to find and only at very specific locations(Colleges). Despite there being several colleges particular subjects can only often be found at the most high end colleges. So if you wanted to transfer from a community school would it actually be possible to do so which these type of majors? If you cant find the classes you need how do you know what to take in the mean time? For Meteorol…

  18. I will be starting at UC Riverside soon as a Microbiology major and I am very interested in Plant Pathology. Luckily, the university has a great plant pathology department and the professors seem very open to letting undergrads in to their labs. The dean of the college I am in told us that some of the plant biology and entomology faculty have a very low student to faculty ratio, so those are probably my best shot for mentoring or research experience (although you usually need a year of chemistry before getting a position in a lab). Although upperclassmen have assured me that it is very easy to get into a lab as a sophomore or above, I am having trouble figuring out exactl…

Hi, I am planning on majoring in biochemistry at UT Austin. I've read that the job prospects for science majors aren't too wonderful. As someone who is not planning on going pre-med, how can I make my degree more valuable in the eyes of employers? In addition to engaging myself in research projects and volunteering in labs, I am also considering taking some additional computer science courses or to possibly double major in another subject. Would that be sufficient?

Hey all, I've been facing a dilemma for quite awhile. I decided to pursue science the week before college started, but have had trouble "specializing." I know that many different fields excite me - genetics, neuroscience, molecular biology, biomedical studies, etc., but now as I approach my junior year, I still have not found what I would be passionate about studying for the rest of my life. I have already begun dabbling in research but there is just not enough time to gain exposure to all of these different fields. This unfortunately leaves me in the position to do a lot of guesswork in terms of my major, the classes I take, and what programs I end up pursuing for a …

Hello Everyone, I am an undergraduate studying - Environmental Science. My question is whose formula do I use? I used mnemonics to learn the Fundamental Constants from a Chemistry book only to find the numbers are different in the other Chemistry textbooks, and Physics textbooks that I have. I found a website 'physics.nist.gov' and they have even different numbers for the constants? I am confused. Should I go ahead and re-learn the numbers the physics website gives? (I don't want to bump head with a professor who governs from the textbook.) I have yet to take Calculus, so I don't understand the numbers in parenthesis for formulas? For example, Electron mass - m…

Hi, Im undecided about which degree is better. Im currently studying Electronics Engineering and I was wondering If switching to physics is also a good choice? I like physics no doubt but It seems , here in my country, the career is not as valuable as an Engineering degree (good pay, perfect job market). So I have chosen engineering instead, but I dont think physics on it are deep enough. So I had two ideas: 1) Finish my undergraduate engineering degree and aim for a phd on physics while I study physics subjects that are were not in my degree (quantum mechanics, relativity, etc) and do a mastery. 2)Switch to physics undergrad, finish it and go for a phd and a mast…

  23. I'm majoring in environmental science and I have to choose a focus. I can choose from environmental biology, geology, planning, technology, or chemistry. I wanted to do biology originally, but it has twice as many required courses as the others. Which option would be best for a wider range of job options after I graduate? Would any of them open up options of jobs with higher pay? I was also thinking of minoring in journalism, but my university has a science writing minor. Which one would be best if I want to publish articles for magazines/newspapers/online? Or would a minor not even be necessary? I've read on some other college forums that it's not really necessary to mi…

Hi, I need help with where to start again with learning since... I'll just be truthful with my introduction. I'm a Hikimori-NEET (Not in Education Employment or Training) ever since I graduated from highschool 5 years ago. The reason for this was intense bullying (both cyber and non-cyber). I suppose I just have a weak character. Well I'm about to turn 18 in a few months and I truly want to change. When I saw my brother go to law school, I felt both happiness and sadness. I'm proud of him and disappointed with myself. Hopefully I may quickly get back on track and face every issue that I have head on. Well, that's the primary reason for joining this foru…

  25. Determining the origin of fires involves a variety of sciences from psychology to chemistry and physics. Virtually everyone has the means to commit such a crime, so opportunity and most importantly, motive are among the chief considerations. Among the most common indicators of arson is residue of petrochemical accelerants, such as gasoline, kerosene or diesel fuel. It is also possible to detect electrically induced fires of an intentional or negligent nature.
