  1. Hello! As the topic name suggests, I've started a project where I'm collecting various data about different people from different parts of the world. My objective is to find whether or not there is the slightest relevance in the correlation between the personality and birth date of the individual. Of course It's definitely vital to take in account the background and environment in which the individual grew up. However, the plan is to find "coincidences" between the personality type and birth date of the individual. If enough matches are found, the study will continue. Otherwise I will, personally, consider the zodiac idea to surely be nothing but a myth. It does seem …

  2. Hi! I’m a researcher at University College London (UCL) and I’m currently running a study looking at work stress and how people recover from work, with the hope to find out what factors and activities (for example, social support) may help with this. I’m really keen to get respondents from a variety of professions, levels of job stress and working hours, so it’d be great if anyone from this forum would be interested in taking part. It only takes 15 minutes and you’ll receive instant feedback on things like whether you have high work strain, whether you’re successfully recovering from work and whether you’re work life is influencing your home life. Plus, you’ll be…

I am starting this as a split from another thread.http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/71115-finally-in-college/ Actually I can think of a worse scenario, write grants that do not hit and then get urged to write further grants for the PI without actually having time to do research of any sorts (and obviously without crediting in the grant). After two years these postdocs may very well leave the position with nothing to show. Also, as a correction to a an earlier post of mine : the NIH grant towards independence is the K99/R00 mechanism. Non US citizens are also eligible for that. I think there was one more for postdocs but can't remember). The…

  8. Over and over again I am disappointed and appalled with how general public perceives the word 'theory' as used in science to mean the exact same thing it does in some casual everyday conversation... that is, speculation, guesswork, opinion... On a personal level, it is annoying to watch scientifically illiterate people dismiss a scientific theory as 'just a theory', but, more importantly, I feel it's detrimental to goals of science to have this general public 'it's just a theory' sentiment floating around allowing loud, ignorant people to dismiss scientific theories backed up by evidence accumulated over hundreds of years as comparable to some outrageous nonsense back…

I've been thinking about creating a blog to identify common arguments against scientific topics such as evolution and ways to answer and educate for people who find themselves arguing with creationists, anti-vaccine people, etc. If I did I like for people to post questions or arguments that commonly (or even not so common) come up that they may have trouble addressing. I was just wondering what the feelings are towards something like that are. Would it be worth the effort and time or would it just be a waste? Input would be much appreciated.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=is-quantum-reality-analog-after-all Last year the Foundational Questions Institute's third essay contest posed the following question to physicists and philosophers: “Is Reality Digital or Analog?” The organizers expected entrants to come down on the side of digital. After all, the word “quantum” in quantum physics connotes “discrete” —hence, “digital”. Many of the best essays held, however, that the world is analog. Among them was the entry by David Tong, who shared the second-place prize. I'd say both. You?

hi, im planning on starting my own personal private blog just for myself, sorta like a diary to keep track of what I have done throughout the day. I plan on spending about 30 mins a day on it starting tomorrow. gonna try it out for 30 days and if I enjoy it, it might become a continuous future hobby of mine for many years to come. Does anyone have any tips/advice on whether I should include spelling mistakes/incorrect grammar in it? Its just that it might make it seem more personal if I read/write it like that but secretly a small person inside of me secretly disapproves of when I do things purposefully incorrectly. thanks guys, your opinions. also, no …

Would anyone like to discuss the TV show Primeval? I just finished watching the entire series again and i liked it quite a bit. The first time i watched it i completely turned off my disbelief and just watched it as if I believed it all. The second time i watched it with a more critical eye. I found it to be fairly internally consistent and the obvious cultural differences between British and American styles of TV shows was also interesting. Anyone up for a episode by episode discussion of the show?

I sat here tonight, after running the battery down on my cell phone arguing with the power company that i hadn't asked for the power to be turned off, and i noticed a glowing streak on the floor. Very very dim, glowing blueish streak on the hardwood floor. it was about 3 centimeters long and maybe 1 centimeter wide. very blurry borders, the brightest area was the center. very hard to see, any light at all kept me from seeing it for several minutes. The house was built in 1936, the floors are from that first construction. Not a damp place or anything like that, i investigated it until the power came back on. No trace of anything once the lights came back on. …

  17. Of course, I would not do it there. I was just indicating it is necessary. Whatever I said in the thread I did it to show what is necessary. I was not going discuss there, why & how it is necessary. I was indicating the necessity where the necessity arose. When the inconsistencies in a Mainstream theory are made obvious by an offbeat thought isn't it appropriate to appraise the inquirer of it. If not done, would it not amount to concealing the Truth in order to protect the Mainstream theory, and eventually be injustice meted out to the inquirer? How I love your honesty, Swansont. You are a sweetest guy I have met in my life. But, Won't the world…

Can you help a high scholler out? Okay, here's the deal: I like this girl. She's a senior, and I'm a freshman. I don't know if she likes me back. I don't really know if she has a boyfriend or not. Her facebook says no, but I figure she does. I don't know wether to tell her how I feel or not. I'm always in perpetual fear of being rejected. I figured I'd ask fellow nerds, because most think the way I do. Please help.

Having, at one time at least, been an audiophile I have done little but play my stereo in so long I can't remember if this will be a problem but in my new house I am having problems getting my turntable close to my control amplifier, feedback due to the speakers vibrating the floor has become a problem. All my other components are happy near my speakers but the turn table is getting feed back pretty bad. Can the RCA type connectors from my turntable be any arbitrary length or is there a maximum length? Anyone know?

  22. Killer Whales vs Witty Otter - Youtube I will be starting my degree is ecosystem restoration soon and needed a break from lurking in the math forums. Most recent animal video I saw today, pretty cool footage of an otter escaping from killer whales by hopping on a boat. Think she lost her pup though . But anyway, seen a lot of the popular nature documentaries, but any interesting and recent videos you would like to share post in here, cheers!

  23. I figured that the Lounge is as good a place as any to post this thread. Having a biopharmaceutical lab career, I recently had interesting talks with a friend who works in a doctor's office, specifically a gynecologist's office. In biopharma labs, we must properly label and store all substances. The label must show the substance's name, its lot number, its concentration, its expiration date and its storage requirements. In my friend's office, liquid substances are decanted into simple jars and cups with simple labels that give only the name of the substance (such as "Ferric sulfate" and "Lugols") — without any lot number, concentration, expiration date or storag…

  24. Started by Ben Banana,

I keep trying to tell myself I'm delusional, but it's not working... To the extent of my experience, I'm under the impression that most of my schooling, formal study and education, as far as my effort has pushed, has only been corrosive to my intellect. Isn't there something wrong with my perception? Am I doing something wrong? I don't want to believe myself ... but I can't help it. I feel like some of my intellectual skills I believe I was once exceptionally good with, such as intuitive (mathematical) problem solving, have dulled. I (delusionally?) see a possible connection with this degradation to my formal education, because as I've relearned how to mechanically ha…
