This is one of the oddest thigns I've ever seen: http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2014/08/bros-and-my-little-pony/375793/ If you don't want to read the whole article, there is apparently a lot of young men (average age 21) who are fans of the cartoon My Little Pony, and they have conventions where they dress up and do all the other typical stuff that happens at conventions. What is not explained at all in the article is what the appeal is. Has anyone read about this before and can anyone explain what the appeal is?

Today, August 13th, is Left Handers Day. On this day, we celebrate the lefties, and we appreciate their effort to adapt to the right-handed world. Obviously, the left-handed people must adapt to the simple things, such as scissors designed for right-handed people and fish knives which are only useful when held in the right hand, but there are many more examples. Did you know that left handed people must make a huge effort to read the text on a pen or pencil, as it is always upside down when they write with it? So, look up some left handed people today, and thank them for their efforts!

The other night I was playing around with a couple of magnets I have, they are very powerful and were sold as toys for a short time but injuries to kids caused them to be pulled off the market. The magnets are oblong, thinker in the middle than the ends, about 2" long and maybe 3/4 of an inch think at the middle. The poles are centered in the middle instead of the ends. The idea of them being a toy was that you could throw them in the air and they would find each other and orbit each other for a fraction of a second. They make a rattling noise as they come together and orbit each other. I was eating boiled eggs, yes I like boiled eggs, and I put an egg that had …

Could not find an open thread on movies so if you've seen something good put it here maybe. Try not to give spoilers.. I just came from an advance screening of "GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY" and we found it to be a hilarious space romp. We enjoyed it a lot. There are some 80's references so if you're younger you may want to look up the movie Flashdance or you'll miss a funny reference. Earlier this week we saw "Lucy". It was also well done, and somewhat unique. Both are science fiction so might appeal to a science crowd more than most.

There's no antonym for suicide/suicidal, so I'm going to make one. The opposite of suicidal is conservavite, from Latin conservo and aevum meaning to preserve age.

  12. Through globalisation, a growing global population and the increasing use of the internet people are viewing pornography more regularly and starting to at younger ages. http://au.askmen.com/dating/news/side-effects-of-porn.html My question is, do the side effects outweigh the benefits? It is evident that easy accessibility to pornography has decreased marriage rates but it has also decreased the value of free sex as a commodity it may have once been. What are the benefits of being desentized to sexual images? In your opinion, is it a good thing and is this the direction society should be headed?

  13. The universe along with everything that exists in it is alive. For us to view this world in any manner that promotes the thought of anything being less significantly important, is inhumane. Biotic components other than complex life like humans also share ranges of emotions, senses, and stimuli to their environment. Even the inorganic inanimate materials in this world share the energy that is within us and in a constant cycle. The energy, the atoms, the molecules, the elements, the RNA, the DNA, everything that exists is in a constant cycle. From startdust to dust in the wind. We walk around like we know everything there is to know, confidently blind. Even the scientists,…

Leaving today for a siteseeing trip to Maine. When I was a boy, a friend of mine's dad was lost forever hunting in Maine. I was reminded of a time I was lost in the woods, near the lake where my friend and his lost dad had stayed in the summer. I was traveling a trail back to the old iron mines that I had traveled often, but had left the trail, lost the trail, and my bearings and had no idea which direction would take me home or back to the trail. The sky was cloudy so the Sun was not apparent. Moss on the trees did not seem to give me a good North indication. I did not know if I was traveling in circles or in the right direction or the wrong. Then the "tip" o…

In this video; he was first appeared in the elections of Popstar: He thought him as a world hyperstar! He was actually a mechanical engineer: But he was changed his career to popstar. So Stephen Wolfram, creator of Mathematica, is about to release a search engine for formal knowledge based on Mathematica: http://www.twine.com/item/122mz8lz9-4c/wolfram-alpha-is-coming-and-it-could-be-as-important-as-google The idea is they'll hand curate a formal knowledge database about science, technology, geography, weather, cooking, business, travel, people, music, etc. and from this Mathematica will be able to apply rich calculations to answer natural language questions. It will be interesting to see how well this works.

This mostly goes out to the parents here on SF and anyone else who has an opinion on the subject. Circumcisions, did you choose to or not with your child? Personally I don't think circumcisions are necessary and are only a cosmetic cultural practice that has transcended from outdated religious practices to make sex less frequent and pleasurable. We chose not to circumcise our son, my significant other was going to at first but I was against it. I'm circumcised and never really thought a whole deal about it until recently. My standpoint on it is mainly this - The foreskin is meant to be there, it provides slack while being 1/3 of the penis skin. It has 20,000 …

I posted this in other sciences months ago with 99 views and no replies. I'm guessing it was in the wrong area, posting this again hoping to get some info. Please mods, don't take this down. I'm really curious about this, I know it's dumb but the question has just been aching at me. If I don't get any responses this time I promise I'll leave the topic alone. How long have humans wore diapers or cloths over our infants? Is this something all cultures have done or only a select few? I can't seem to find any information on google, as all that comes up is information on disposable diapers.
