Seen any good sculptures made from almonds lately? Note: no other nut-based sculptures may be discussed under threat of the ban-hammer!

What's your best moment today? I was working hard, reading, modeling, writing... and then I looked up and realised my roommate looks and acts a bit like Wallace (from Wallace & Gromit). It really cheered me up. Other days big events might be the highlight, but today this was it (so far). What was your highlight today? (Don't say "the moment I could finally go home", because that's a cliché even before it's written for the first time).

Debating global warming, their arguments basically boil down to this: - There is no proof for global warming. - Any scientist who believes in global warming is just being bullied into it - Most peer reviewed papers have made up data in them, because scientists just want more funding Every time I post a counterargument I am simply amazed at their skill to totally ignore and twist things. This seems to be the bane of my existence; do you argue with these types of people knowing that their ignorance will never go away, or do you just accept that you can't change their mind even though it grinds your gears to even think about it?

I am working on a new blog about inhabiting Mars sometime in the future. I am aware there are many issues we would have to confront before we could actually pick up and migrate to the red planet, but I would like to hear some suggestions from you guys, issues that might not be included. I would say that the biggest problem is the fact there is no dynamo effect on Mars, thus limiting the ability of the Martian atmosphere to hold in certain gasses essential to life as we know it.

Ok, so I'm just finishing my first semester in college and I was just screwing around on google and decided to see what sorts of jobs a sociology degree could get me. Needless to say, I was unimpressed. Now while I've always enjoyed the thought of doing research like Wade Davis and others, I've always found fields such as astronomy fascinating. The problem with that is I'm terrible/terrified of math, but I'm finding that unlike when I was in high school 15 years ago I'm not doing so bad. I'm almost 34, could I try for a degree in that? Would I be wasting my time? If not that, what interesting things could I use a sociology degree for (beyond social work...I don't…

Could be an oversight, but I don't recall it ever saying "peer-reviewed by _____ and _____" in a study or research printing. It occurred to me as I was reading through papers in the Scholars Research Library. How can one tell what's been peer-reviewed or not? Scholars Research Library journals offering peer-reviewed, scientifically based articles and original research, this contains information that will assist you in understanding intricacies of sciences. Scholars Research Library journals provide you with sound and expert research and advice to help you offer expertise to broaden information on the technology or the application of science The entry pag…

Interesting idea. Google makes a kind of subject-oriented page whenever there's a major story, and you can visit that page for updates. So you go to the "Tiger Woods Infidelity Scandal" (my label) page and then follow updates from there. You don't have to scour the Google News front page for updates, or wait for email updates. They've got some pretty clever ideas going on on these pages, including summaries and timelines showing when each aspect of the story appeared in the media. Unfortunately all of the entries (and in fact all of the stories on the page) come from the same source, which is a sponsor for the page. (So far it's just the New York Times and the W…

I just read Toastywomble's blog http://blogs.scienceforums.net/toastywombel/2009/12/12/confronting-ignorance-kindly/ and read the whole thread that he referenced to about the information overload.. er factual overload. MY GOD THAT WAS THE FUNNIEST THREAD I HAVE EVER SEEN. at first it looked like the guy was legitimately asking for a unified theory of evolution.. in 1 sentence. However, as i read it became more apparent that he would not read any link or reference to such a theory. the thread eventually devolved into name calling. and about the end i realized just how trollish his OP was, and how his OP was designed to falsify every link to evolution, and how his OP …

So, 2007-2008 has been a reasonably fruitful period in the category of awesome PC and console games, so I thought I'd make a thread about it. Played any recent games? Waiting for any? I think the two best games last year were BioShock and Mass Effect, truly great gameplay, graphics and plot in both cases. Crysis wasn't bad either. Mass Effect was recently ported to PC and I finished it a while back and it was better than I expected (and had many of the elements that made Star Control 2 so enjoyable, for example well-written characters, exciting exploration and hot sex with blue aliens), but the optional part of the game was missing a bit of diversity that would've bro…

Which of the major physics theories do you think are the most rock-solid? That have no chance whatsoever of being overturned? I think it is electromagnetism. There's no paradoxes that I'm aware of with electromagnetism. Nothing extremely unintuitive, though a few people have problems with the perpendicular nature of electricity and magnetism. No conflicts that I know of with other theories. It doesn't break down anywhere. At most, people have suggested making the equations symmetrical by adding in magnetic monopoles. The version that includes magnetic monopoles and the effect they would have seems to be unquestionable (the claim that magnetic monopoles don't exist wou…

I searched to see if this question has already been asked, so delete if necessary. Just interested what people aspired to when they were younger, and if possible why i.e did you want to be a vet, policeman, fireman when you grew up (hopelessly stereotypical examples, I know.) Also, is anyone actually fulfilling what they aspired to as a child. Is there anyone who wanted to be a professional scientist when they grew up, whichever field that may be. Up until my early teens, I really wanted to break into the movie special effects world, specifically creating monsters, robotics and gore, that type of thing. I had a hobby of coming up with designs, and modelling cr…

http://www.lockerz.com The thing actually seems legit, but I was wondering if anyone has redeemed anything with them yet? The gist of the website is; you make an account, you answer one question a day (I assume it's for marketing research and they sell your answers, which is how they are able to keep this site going), and you get points from it. You can then redeem the points on their website to get real stuff, but they only restock on items every once in awhile. I currently have only enough points for a video game, but almost enough for a nintendo wii (which is what I must get!). So, yeah I was just wondering if anyone here has got stuff from them yet. …
