If say I posted one topic, and someone agrees with me but others don`t agree with me, so say they choose to express their choice by +1 or -1. Is it fair to me if the number of members who vote +1(support my arguement) is more than the number of members who vote -1(disagree with me). Maybe there are more members who are prefering +1 than -1 in this forum? I should stress that I won`t mention about reputation before in the last post but this condition might happen although it is very unlikely, so raising this possibility should be fine.

  3. I occasionally make posts on this thread to ask questions, but most of the time I'm on a different forum which uses the same Invision Power Services software as this forum (although the versions may be different). The other forum I'm on has three separate themes that can be changed with a tiny button on the bottom of the main page, and those three themes are normal, mobile, and IP.Board (default). The IP.Board theme, in all honesty, looks almost exactly like the theme of scienceforums.net. What I'm suggesting is that we should get some ideas going in this thread so we can give this forum it's own little unique touch.

I wonder if aforementioned time delay works only for new users. Not many communities use such spam protection.

The mobile version always goes to the last page of a thread. Is there any way to get to the first page without having to repeatedly hit the previous button?

One of the hazards of anonymous voting is people who can't or won't support their positions are still able to express their judgement with a negative vote. Maybe the system could be augmented to invert the votes of drive by naysayers, who have given no reason for their opinions. This could motivate some to try and explain themselves.

I'm not clear on a lot of the rules. Is there a rule 2.5 about posting theories? I came to this site to have peers approach my speculations from different perspectives and knowledge bases. If this isn't the place for that is there some other place i should post? and is there a rule about posting the same thread in different categories because i want philosophers, geneticist, and biologist to offer opinions so i posted in all three forums. Is that ok?

Since it's come up… First of all, from the FAQ: You can go and Google the word and find the definition of plagiarism the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own (See what I did there? I provided a link. Pretty simple.) Students are cautioned because they seem to be prone to it and are often in situations where it might be a problem but there is nothing in the definition that confines the practice to students. Academics, journalists and even politicians have been embroiled in plagiarism scandals. It is, as is plainly stated, passing off someone else's work as your own. It has little or nothing to do with copyri…

  13. When we post topics in SFN, we usually don`t consider the font type used as being too important. We simply type words as the font size given remains the same throughout the forum(SFN). If so, why still retain this function/service? Until now, still unaware of post with different font types.

I just had a thread split for Hijacking and another warning was given to me even though a) I did not hijack the thread b) No moderator sent a note or even a comment about my 2nd warning which must have occurred today. I understand this is a set cliche and I ruffle some feathers, but try to have some semblance of fairness. One day I'll be banned but that will never make this right. If in a religion thread someone cannot plug the idea that Telepathy/Mass Consciousness is a pretty hefty steppingstone towards the belief in god then the mentality of this group (whatever mod bypassed warning and commenting) falls in question (or anyone agreeing with them). …

I've noticed in some threads if you go to the last page number indicated just before the Opening Post it often is not the last page unless you hit "next" first. http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/68723-proof-of-god/ The above link is currently an example, but it might change as more posts are added there. - The last page is listed as 3 (currently). - So you go to page 3 and scroll down and discover there is a page 4 This seems common issue here as I've seen it in other areas. Just a counting glitch in the software that should be reported..?? It occurred to me maybe it was just a numbering style, but that cannot be because it does fit in all pag…

Is this Inbox tool download item that I am getting legitimate? First I see "View New Messages". When I click that, it says I am missing a tool and should click to download. There is no explanation of where this comes from and why I should download it. Oh, there is a name at the top which I've fast forgotten but it isn't "Science Forums". Can someone please explain? I don't buy blind. I don't download blind. Cagey I am. Thanks.

How can I terminate my membership if I want to quit this forum? I mean completely deleting my account and all my information.

  18. One of the rules we've tried to uphold here at SFN is the "No personal attacks" rule. We want people to feel free to discuss ideas here without fear of being judged personally by them. The consensus has always been that it's certainly possible to have a bad idea without being a bad person. Still, it's difficult to ignore the personal angle when certain words are used. If I use the word "moronic" to describe your idea (hopefully with deeper reasoning and supportive evidence), am I just saying that the idea is stupid and lacks good judgement, or am I saying that's an idea only a moron would have? Same thing with idiotic. Are these words inherently personal? The rea…

In a current thread a member made a lighthearted comment. Another member took exception to it, since it did have a political slant, and asked the first member to keep "the political hogwash" out of the forum as it diluted the quality of the discussion. I posted a suggestion that the member lighten up - a little humour is not out of place here. I don't want to discuss that specific example - it's just what triggered this observation. I think occasional humour in the forum is a good thing. Now, am I right? Is it acceptable, occasionally to inject a pun, a quick, relevant joke, a witty observation, or should we stay objective and humourless at all times?

  20. I realize one strange taxonomy of science fields in this forum. You see Astronomy and Cosmology section is included under Physics section. If astrophysics threads are posted, there wouldn`t be a problem. But what about astrobiology and astrochemistry? Aren`t they fields under biology and Chemistry?

  21. You know, since I participated in this forum I found out that reputations shouldn`t be a function for members in this forum. Voting someone`s post down is really hurting someone sometimes. Maybe I don`t take it for granted, but others do. So, I urge the administrator to reconsider whether it is a must to remove this function because this reputation points can`t just tell you how famous or how well a member has done. You can see the words but somehow you can`t see the face.
