Eventually, I want to be able to do some computationally-heavy modeling work, which obviously requires programming knowledge. Is there a specific language that would be good for this type of interest. Where can a newb start learning about building the tools to develop skills to develop stochastic-type models? Thanks!

Ran across this while doing some research. It's a Wiki at York University that summarizes research topics in Information Systems/Science. It's a pretty good germ of an idea because it's a bit of a step up from the Wikipedia for people actually pursuing research in these areas, serving as a more useful starting point because of all the citations. http://www.fsc.yorku.ca/york/istheory/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

I noticed that a lot of the programming questions here, while phrased in terms of coding in specific languages, are actually rooted in a broader context of programming itself. People are having problem with the ideas behind programming in general. If we help people with algorithm building, the language-specific syntax falls into place. So, this thread is for tips on programming in general. This isn't about programming in python or programming in java. This is about the fundamental heart of what one needs to do. If anything, it's tips on how to code in PseudocodeTM. I'll start: One of the biggest thing about programming is being able to break a problem down …

I bought a cheap low end HP notebook, second one in 2 years. I'm not liking having to customize and format another computer but looks like I'm going to need to go through and delete a lot of operating code and unwanted Windows 10 garbage. It would be nice if I could delete Cortana but they seemed to have got that one covered. Windows 10 sucks ass and makes it feel like you don't even own your computer. I might get a retro Windows 7 or Windows 8 and wipe and reboot with that to avoid this pesky "everything must be accessible to Microsoft" trash. I hate you Microsoft. This is gonna take forever.

I'm a computer science major and I was wondering how important calculus grades (and GPA in general) are for this major. At the moment I have an A in my programming and Math courses, but this is mostly due to generous curving on my math professors part and while I'm doing okay in Calc I, I am struggling through it and am worried about future math courses. Is it worth stressing too much over? Of course I'll try to do the best I can, but is it really just more important that I understand programming and get good grades in those classes? Or is this a field where you have you show you are good in math and programming? Anyone else a programmer who isn't too great at calcul…

Hey Guys: For my research project, I would need a python code that will enable me to extract specific lines from a textfile. The textfile has the following format: fixedStep chrom=chr3 start=56424 step=1 0.000 0.001 0.001 0.002 0.003 0.004 0.005 0.006 0.007 0.007 fixedStep chrom=chr3 start=56425 step=1 Etc.... In fact, I would like to obtain an other textfile without the numerical lines, in the following format: fixedStep chrom=chr3 start=56424 step=1 fixedStep chrom=chr3 start=56425 step=1 Etc.... Looking forward to hearing from you soon, Best, JEFF O.

I haven't searched thoroughly, so I apologize if I missed an existing thread... Can anyone give me an example of a differential equation used in computer science with a brief explanation? I'm working on a project that needs a specific example, but I don't know any yet, and a Google search failed to yield anything I could understand (I'm working with somewhat patchy first-year knowledge). Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not sure how to work out the answer for these 2 questions: (1) Consider a byte address 0xDEAD on 16-bit machine. What is the corresponding word address? a) 0xDEAD b ) 0xDEAB c) 0xDEAE d) 0xDEAC e) 0xDEAA (2) Consider a byte address 0xDEAD on a 32-bit machine. What is the corresponding word address? a) 0xDEAC b ) 0xDEAB c) 0xDEAE d) 0xDEAD e) 0xDEAA I understand that 16-bit has 2bytes & 32-bit has 4-bytes. For question (1) would i take DE and AD, if so how do i convert is into word addr.? I don't understand the term "word" clearly.... Please explain this and question Thanks for your help:)
