id like to talk about illegal drugs, from "party drugs and relaxences" like weed, to psycodelics like shrooms and acid. first: how strong are the effects of these drugs, from phisical to mental, on the body. 2nd: why have they been banned from alot of countrys when other drugs have not, such as alchohal, which if not worse, is atleast equily "bad" as most drugs. now im not realy endorsing drugs or anything, more defending peoples rights to have and use them, but why not have monitered "bars" for drugs, where you can rent a room to use drugs that you buy there, and use there only, cant take the drugs out, get searched on the way out all that stuff, but a…

...grammar, wild ideas, etc. i.e. those online people who claim to be a younger age, usually in order to excuse their post's grammar or a wild idea. But on a psychological level, do you think it completely natural for a kid to even highlight their age in such a circumstance? I wouldn't think so. Actually seems like a cover either for asking (what they perceive to be) a "stupid" question, or their partly illegible grammar. But let's hear what the experts say

So, I'm late in high school and have somewhat known this girl for about four years (we'll call her Mona). She is excellent at art, but has a sort of fixation with fictional character she has created. She will often refer to them in conversation as if they were real people and talks about them obsessively. She seems to have had been a social misfit all her life. Last year in a Geometry course, I sat two seats behind her... between us sat three girls who have always been regarded as popular and pretty. One day I caught them having a conversation amongst themselves, and were suprisingly accepting towards her involvement in the talking. During the conversation Mona expre…

When we are dreaming, why do we think it is real? It is so different to daydreaming, where we think about imaginary scenarios, but are aware that it is hypothetical. When we are asleep and dreaming, is our assumption of reality because of the suppression of our ability to differentiate between the real and the imaginary? How do we differentiate?

I noticed some discussion on the loss of short term memory but I'm interested in the long-term. I've always had a poor memory when it comes to remembering events from my childhood to my teens. Big family vacations (Hawaii, Bermuda, Disney World) - I've forgotten most if not all of the events of these vacations. I can remember having gone there, but I can't remember anything about them. For instance, in Hawaii, I believe it was 6th grade, I know my sister and I jumped off the top of a waterfall because of a picture my parents took and because they've told me we've done it, but I can't do a "walk through" in my head of us doing it. I know we can't remember everything ab…

Hi all, Have you ever been diagnosed with a psychotic, anxiety and/or depressive disorder(s)? Or have you never been diagnosed with any mental health condition? If so, then I was wondering whether you would be willing to be a research participant for a study on cognitive beliefs? This is for my Postgraduate dissertation and will take about 20 to 30 mins of your time. It involves completing out some questionnaires anonymously. Participation is completely voluntary and you don't have to do it if you dont want too. However I will appreciate it greatly if you do. To be a participant for my study, you should be: * Aged 18+ * Fluent in the English language You…

Came up with a definition of love about 8 years ago. Based on some philosopical thoughts about consciousness, and general musings, and I just looked at it again, from a scientific brain mechanism point of view and think it might be right. "Love is when you include another entity in your feeling of self." What do you think? Regards, TAR

Hi All, I'm taking a brief break from the paper I'm writing to ask for advice. I'm a graduate student in a Human Factors Psychology program, and I wanted to ask for tips/tricks on finding articles/past research, because I'm simply terrible at it! For example: I wanted to find some articles on feedback interventions that lead to a quicker aquisition of exepertise, but searches in both google scholar and my university library bring up NOTHING I'd consider relevant. I'll take any suggestions or overall tips on using search engines to find relevant articles, no matter how rudimentary you may think it is. I'll welcome any suggestion. If there's a good on…

Hi: I've heard that extremely-negative emotional experiences can cause the individual to lose memory of the event -- dissociative amnesia. I have two questions: 1. Can extremely positive emotional events also cause dissociative amnesia? 2. What are the neurological mechanisms by which memories of intensely negative psychological events are lost? Thanks, Green Xenon

ok, there was something that was bugging me ever since i read "hijacks" in the OP title, i was misunderstood in the first time so i'll try to be clearer this time.. i DO understand that this thread isn't about whether or not god exists, but more of an explanation and discussion of how the belief in a deity exists between humans, and why it's very common.. first i'll state what i take as facts, pieces of information which i'll base my conclusion upon, if there's any disagreement on any of them, then we should clear that first: 1-the belief in god is a product of evolutionary processes humans undergo. 2-the whole idea of evolution is to, well, evolve, to bec…

Heys guys im doing a couple of psychology units this semster and was hoping for some help. I'm going to be surveeying people in my class by showing them clips from films, sticoms, etc and then asking them to rate the the personality of each characters they saw. I'm using the 1 to 10 scale for each personality trait. Ex: Extroversion-Introversion whereby 1 is very introverted and 10 is very extroverted. What do you think would be the most accurate and descriptive 10 or less dimensions of the human personality?

Derren Brown appeared on English TV today on Freeview channel 4 (and I think it's the same on Virgin and Sky). The program covered much but the item of most awe to me was when he supposedly showed an audiance and the viewers a video that made half of them stick to there chair so they couldn't get up for a while. He said he thought due to not ideal viewing conditions at home the number would be much less. He revealed methods he used and ones he didn't although this didn't reveal much. Before the video and once eairler in the show when he was descussing the idea were flashes, verry quick such that I couldn't really tell what they were but apeared to be inkings o…

So I was looking through the pseudoscience and speculations sections, and I found myself newly amazed by the number and depth of crackpot theories. They wildly twist mathematics, science, and the english language into incomprensibility and absurdity, yet I'm convinced they're not jokes, just because there was clearly so much time spent on them. They often show familiarity (if not correct understanding) with highly esoteric subjects, and are often accompanied by "calculations" which must have taken hours if not days. So I guess my question is, is there a name for this kind of behavior? What causes someone to do all this?

Just out of interest (a kind of unofficial survey), can anyone give me a definition of pain? I don't mean emotional distress, I mean 'physical' pain. I'm interested in your opinions, not what the books say. What is pain? How would you define it?

The Concept Of IQ Is Based On Academic Charlatanism And Scientific/Mathematical Falsehood The use of IQ as a measure of human intelligence is neither scientific nor properly grounded in the appropriate multivariate statistical analysis Our current apprehension of what constitutes the proper scope of psychometric analysis is grounded upon a series of pseudo-scientific formulations without any legitimate basis in multivariate statistical analysis. Consequently, the field of intelligence testing is nothing more but a neo-eugenic programme which has been deliberately obscured from public view; it is a front for modern scientific racism concealed behind the impe…

I was just wondering today, why is it so interesting to say play a multiplayer game on my ps3 or to ride my bike or to interact with friends... I've done it millions of times already... its because of curiosity. What new situation will happen this time that has never happened before? Its the fact that every possible situation that happens next is completely unimaginable is why it's so interesting. Of course in some situations you are more curious as to what happens next than others. Like right now I am not too curious as to what people will respond to this. But when I'm interacting with someone in real life I can't even imagine what they will do. And I can't imagine w…

I know the idea that a high systemic/low empathic mind is a male one while the high empathic/low systemic end of the continuum is female domain, is a huge oversimplification, I just called it that so people would get the idea... Is there such a disorder? Could there be such a thing as 'system blindness', where though someone would be extremely empathic and do very well at sensing people's emotions, they would have low to no ability to use reductive or systemic thinking? Is this even a legitimate concept? Are "systemic" and "empathic" really opposites? One theory is that the condition exists, but it isn't a problem because it's not maladaptive: Taken from …
