  1. Emil Du Bois-Reymond reported 150 years ago that electrical currents had the potential to speed up the healing process of wounds on the body, though the idea has been ignored until now. In short, cells and tissues basically function as chemical batteries, with positively charged potassium ions and negatively charged chloride ions flowing through the membranes. When tissue is subjected to a wound it disrupts the electrical field, and repair cells are guided to the damaged area. By applying electrical fields to a wound, research has shown that the healing process can be sped up or stopped completely. The research was conducted by Josef Penninger of the Austrian In…

Does anyone know anything about vitamins? A long time ago I had a deficiency and was given vitamins (don't know what strength). When I got discharged, I bought a bottle (greatest strength) and took them about once a week/every other week so this would not happen again. Then someone mistakenly told me that the reason I was so sensitive was because I needed more vitamins. So I increased the amount per week for about six weeks the way the person advised. When I stopped, my body had an even worse reaction. I became allergic to most food and drink. I have to eat certain organic protein every few hours to keep from having allergic reactions (chest pains, itchy throat, runn…

I just read this article by Robert Matthews, who claims that the AIDS epidemic has peaked, no thanks to science: http://www.thefirstpost.co.uk/index.php?menuID=1&subID=531 I agree! Time we stopped throwing money away on vaccines that don't work and focus on good old-fashioned education.

  8. Ever wonder what its like, to hallucinate? Have you ever been on acid, or shrooms? If you would like to hallucinate and trip out, SAFELY, then i suggest you contribute to this experiment. I do not know if this is legal or illegal to post this, but if any mods out here are disturbed by this please tell me and i will remove this thread right away. Now, when i say "Hallucinogenic Drink", i mean not some fancy chemical reaction and atom bonding w/e. I mean EXPERIMENTING. Like, mixing drinks to other drinks to make a hallucinotory effect. Say you mix Pepsi with Red Bull (this is just an example it does not really work.) So, experimenters, be ready! Find any beverages…

I've googled related topics on steroids and keep on getting 'dangers of using anabolic steroids' et.c So I was wondering if anyone could answer the below. As a child I used to suffer from severe eczema, thankfully it's now under control. However a couple of months ago I had another outbreak and was prescribed a strong steroid cream called Dermovate. I know anabolic steroids (which obviously this cream is not) inhibits the release of adrenaline, the cream I use seems to speed the healing process...though I'm not sure this is exactly what's happening. What is the fundamental process of a steroid on the body ? I can't seem to see the relation between anabolic st…

Ok I am looking for some answers; see the other day we had a scare with something that happened with my grandma who lives next door to me. My grandpa called me up and said there was something wrong with grandma and he had called 911. I ran over and when I arrived I saw my grandma slouched over in a chair sitting very still. Her eyes were closed but as I knelt down and put my hand on her arm she looked at me gave a slight smile and went back to her original state. When we asked her questions she had some ability to attempt to speak but it was very difficult to understand her, and she had some muscle movement but she was very weak. She was drooling slightly also. As t…

Just out of morbid curiosity... I think there are 3 common types of painkiller: paracetamol, aspirin and ibuprofen? What physiologically happens to the body when it's exposed to a (lethal) overdose of these painkillers, and what kinds of differences are there between the three when this happens?

The United States spends more per capita than any other nation on healthcare, yet it doesn't seem to be working. For example, Americans spend twice as much as the British, and yet in every age group, economic bracket, and education level, Americans die sooner and are much more likely to get heart disease, stroke, cancer, and any number of other ailments. So, why? Is it diet? Do we stress ourselves out more? Is our healthcare system just corrupt and ineffective? Is it all three?

So what kind of effect do they actually have? I guess they fall into two categories. The first is stuff like multivitamins, that give your full optimal daily value of pretty much all the vitamins and minerals you need. These seem like they would have to be beneficial, although I'm not sure how much difference they make in a generally non-malnourished person. Do we tend to get most of that stuff anyway? The second category is the "herbal" stuff, like ginseng, ginko baloba, etc. I'm under the impression that it's all just placebo nonsense. Am I correct in that? Or is there actual evidence that that stuff does anything? If so, what does it do, exactly?

This is an idea some friends and I have kicked around a bit. I realalize this is not rational, but I'm wondering if there could be any validity to it. We say: If you could give every one on the planet AIDS (or any disease for that matter) and we continued to reproduce, passing on the disease. Wouldent we as a spices develope some kind of an immunity to it? ^---- the result of college students what do you guys think?

The normal wisdom is that it is not possible to take drugs to lose weight and that exercise is the only way to burn fat. But surely this cant be right. My question is what is the direct cause of fat to be burned up. I dont think it is messages from the nervous system to the fat cells to say burn up. It must be the presence or absense of some chemicals or hormones in the blood stream. Perhaps the presence of ADP. So why not hook up fat people to dialysys machines overnight for a number of weeks and get these to add/remove the offending chemicals from their bloodstream as they sleep and they will get slim

I have this weird problem where I will take a nap during the day after I get home from school and soon after I fall asleep my dad will always wake me up to tell me to do something etc. Everytime he does this I will be about an hour into sleep and all of the sudden he wakes me up and everything he says to me is forgotten within seconds. For example he tells me what to do and I get up and by the time I get to the door I no longer remember what he said. Does this happen to anyone else? It's quite annoying.....

I was wondering about this. Does applied maths really play a big part in a medicine. Or is basic maths knowledge up to high school level sufficient. If not, what level of maths is suitable for a person opting for a medical career. (I understand that chemistry is quite maths heavy -mols calculation etc) Just a query. Thanks for any replies.

I'm not sure if anyone else has the following problem, or if there's some scientific explanation for it but nevertheless it's annoying. Since working full time (roughly 10 years now) I wake up on a weekday to go to work, feeling like I really need more sleep for the first ten minutes to half an hour of getting up. My alarm wakes me during the week, and it's turned off at the weekend. When Saturday morning comes around, I wake up roughly round the same time, bright and alert and ready to embrace the day. I don't understand, I certainly don't dread going to work, (in fact I look forward to it most days) and I'm getting less sleep over the weekend...and when I could…
