I don't know if this has already been posted. http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/infopage/ppa/ Should I be alarmed of this? I've been taking such since I can't remember everytime I get a cold. I haven't noticed any action from our Bureau of Food and Drugs. Most of the drugs for colds contain PPA; what are some drugs for colds that don't have PPA?

I was reading the post on cracking knuckles and if it causes arthritis or not. I got to thinking about arthritis and remembered that I once knew a fellow that used WD-40 on his arthritic joints. I have also read about doing this also. I got to wondering if anyone has ever tried this and what the results were.

Okay so this might seem like a stupid question, but I'm curious nevertheless, and have been unable to find the answer anywhere else. Often when I go out for the night and drink probably a bit more than I should I find that my knees feel weak the next morning. They don't hurt, they just feel weak and stiff the next day and sometimes it carries on for another day. Now I'm curious as to the exact cause of this. Is it directly caused my drinking or indirectly? Like is the alcohol doing it or is it more likely that I'm just overexerting myself running around, stumbling, falling over, dancing, going on long walks at 2am in search of pizza. Ummm yeah.

With staph being in the news recently I was wondering about the pathology of S. aureus other than that of the formation of suppuration and absecess. I was also curious, the super staphs as they are called are resistant to oxacillin, penicillin and amoxicillin as well as other first line antibiotics, so what medication is used to fight of the infection? Also this is kinda random but I have a severe problem when it comes to medication, it dosen't work. I have tried almost every OTC medication for colds, flu, nausea, headache, and everything else, but none of the medication has any effect. It is at such a point that not even caffine pills, coffe, or energy drinks will work f…

Hi, Are caffein pills more dangerous for you than a cup of coffee? I'm wondering because, on occasion, I take caffein pills. I know caffein in general can do damage to your kidneys over the longhaul (by increasing your blood pressure), but can the same amount of caffein in pill form do worse or other damaging things? The only thing I can think of is that caffein pills hit your system faster than a cup of coffee (more caffein consumed at higher concentration) and your body may not be prepared for the impact. In fact, I used to take a couple caffein pills first thing in the morning before I even got out of bed (I'd take them, and half an hour more of snoozing, I'd be w…

Several years ago, I had some minor surgery, which required a couple of stitches. I did some of my own doctoring, during the healing process, and would pour hydrogen peroxide on the wound, to keep it sterile. What I noticed was that the peroxide would foam in places that where the wound was in the process of healing. As time went on, the amount of foaming decreased, with only the holes caused by the stictches, causing some residual foaming. Hydrogen peroxide is unstable in acid solutions and will decompose to give off O2. From this, one might conclude the healing wound, was more acidic than the surrounding healthy tissue, As the wound healed, the pH increased back to…

I have read a news article that claims that listening to music while exercising boosts intelligence. I would like to know whether this boost in intelligence is permanent or just temporary. I would like to know if only classical music works or whether rock, rap, or other music or even non-music like audio interviews would have the same effect. Do you have to use earphones while listening to music or can you use speakers located far away from you? Does it matter?

I'm confused. The bottle says "safe as coffee" and "The recommended dose of this product contains about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee" yet it also says "take 1/2 to 1 caplet not more often than every 3 to 4 hours." I've coffee at a rate far greater than one cup every three to four hours before with no ill effects, so I'm confused. Is the bottle exaggerating, or do I have a tolerance from years of caffeine use? Each pill is 200mg. Either way, they keep me awake during class.

I heard about this on the TV and thought it was a good example of good statistical studies leading to irrational results that will be overturned with the next set of studies. The reason I say that, statistical studies are based on a blackbox, where we measure input and output and then create a correlation. But not knowing what is in the blackbox typically leads to short term hype followed by another study that will say the opposite. When I thought about this, I came up with the perfect analogy to describe how something mathematically valid can still lead to the wrong conclusions. For the blackbox in this study, we are going to use a soda machine. Our inputs are coin…

I was wondering if you could help me to help my friend. She is extremely obese. She doesn't care of herself nor does she want to go to a doctor. I think that she thinks that she is happy but in her inner, she wants to improve her life but she doesn't know where to start. I am ready to help her but I don't about diet. While surfing on the net, I came through a medication to treat obesity which is called Acomplia. Can anyone help me on this matter? I know she needs to help herself to get better but she needs help before she dies. Any advice would be immensely appreciated.

I came across this site (http://www.grouppekurosawa.com) whilst researching coconut milk. They offer 'natural' OTC/herbal/food-based treatments for disease such as HIV and cancers. Here is a page on cancer that they have. It seems a bit funny to me that there are no refs to peer reviewed journals and on other parts of the site they even advise specific dosages of e.g. curcumin (what they term a 'natural medicine') Some quotes from the page "..we will show that direct contact of a metastatic tumor mass and a Kurosawa kocktail can induce massive and virtually immediate necrosis in the cancer cells. Although this seems like an ideal treatment protocol, it has it…

So far this one has everybody stumped, but somehow, we will get to the bottom of it. About a month ago, I started developing numbness in the left side of my body below my chestline. So my chiropractor took x-rays of my lumbar/thoracic region to see if anything was out of place pinching a nerve. Nothing showed up, but that's about what I expect from a chiropractor playing around with an x-ray. Right around the same time, I had started sliding on my diet more and more ... more simple starches and saturated fats, and less fresh vegetables. At the time, I was recovering from a strained and slightly torn levator scapulae muscle in my right neck/shoulder, the one t…

I've just had a fascinating experience! First, some background. I have recently installed what is widely known as a whirlpool bath. Such baths have a variety of features more commonly found in saunas. This particular bath has water jets fed by a pump. The bath is filled and when activated, the water is drawn through an inlet and circulated to a number of water jets distributed around the circumference of the bath. The bath is a standard sized 1700mm by 700mm glass-fibre-reinforced acrylic bath. There is nothing special or unusual about it, it's installation or any of the materials used in or around it. Perhaps I should really characterise thi…

At the Wikipedia entry on Drug Rehabilitation it says the following: "With regular use of many drugs, legal or otherwise, the brain gradually adapts to the presence of the drug so that the desired effect is minimal. Apparently normal functioning of the user may be observed, despite being under the influence of the drug. This is how physical tolerance develops to drugs such as heroin, amphetamines, cocaine, nicotine or alcohol. It also explains why more of the drug is needed to get the same effect with regular use." This suggests that as you smoke, say, 10 cigarettes a day, your brain develops tolerance to it and to get the same amount of satisfaction as you did when y…

After reading about and being told some information about a weightloss drug called "alli," a question was posed to me. I'm not too sure how to answer it, so I'm thinking some of you might be able to tackle it: The amount of fat calories a person can consume is different for people. How many grams of fat can one Alli pill stop from being absorbed? One person can eat 4 grams of fat at one meal and have 1 gram (25%) of fat blocked from digestion. Can another person can eat 12 grams of fat at one meal and have 25% (3 grams) not absorbed? If so, how does one Alli pill know how much fat to block? To block 1 gram of fat, or 3 grams of fat?

I just stumbled about this interesting paper. It has been reported earlier that EM fields of mobiles effect cells, including expression changes. Here a direct mechanism has been elucidated in which the EM field induces NADH oxidases to release reactive oxygen species, which in turn activate a regulatory cascade. Abstract: The exposure to non-thermal microwave electromagnetic fields generated by mobile phones affects the expression of many proteins. This effect on transcription and protein stability can be mediated by the MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) cascades, which serve as central signalling pathways and govern essentially all stimulated cellular process…
