Hi All, Apologies if this breaks forum protocol, as I'm about to post a link to a blog post (Mods feel free to remove if inappropriate). The blog is Richard Lenski's blog, where he responds to Michael Behe's book, "Darwin Devolves" and it's treatment of Lenski's own long term evolution experiment (LTEE). He really does a great job of explaining the limitations and context of the LTEE, and why the arguments Behe makes are simply not supported by the experiment. Basically, the LTEE houses bacteria in a nutrient rich environment with selective conditions deliberately minimized. It's not reasonable to assume that the bacteria would evolve novel functions given the envir…

http://crl.i8.com/Evolution/Dna.html DNA Molecules and the Odds Against Evolution Within each cell there is an area called the nucleus which contains the all-important chromosomes. Chromosomes are microscopically small, rod-shaped structures which carry the genes. Within the chromosomes is an even smaller structure called DNA. This is one of the most important chemical substances in the human body -- or in any other living thing. Increasing scientific understanding of DNA molecules has revealed enormous problems for materialism. DNA is a super-molecule which stores coded hereditary information. It consists of two long "chains" of chemical "building b…

How is it defined? Is it possible to have subspecies within subspecies? Can we reasonably divide continuous or clinal variation, such as that we see in ring species?

are there any species on earth that would survive in an ammonia, chlorine or SO2 atmosphere that could be a “template” for biology on other planets?

If life off Earth is discovered, what evidence would science require to prove that the life does not share a common ancestor with life on Earth? In other words, how could science prove that this newly discovered life resulted from a different "genesis" than life on Earth? A different genetic code? A non-carbon molecular base? A different DNA structure? Thanks for your thoughts!

I had this question under Quantum Theory; if all matter/anti matter was living, the reason for the question, is kind of based on this theory. Maybe all living, is to consume(or try) untill there is nothing left. Maybe it is a battle, like imagine, life / (non life)matter being the Yin / Yang, actually fighting and consuming eachother for control/dominance Or life is an entity made to transfer matter into spiritual energy, or anti-matter.. reason for evolution is that (non life) matter is actually alive(in another sense), and fighting back, like antibiotics fight bacteria and vise versa, I imagine it abit like Yin / Yang, where One is to consume the other…

Does anyone select any animals or know a lot about the subject? I'd be very interested to discuss any knowledge on the topic. What effects do you think selective breeding will have in the future on animals raised by humans? Can insects ever be truly domesticated? The link below is a fb group where I hoped to also have discussions on the topic. Url deleted

Can't really find out, if plants descended directly from fungi or, they are a form of competing/symbiotic relationship, or that the fungi simply controls the plant kingdom- First half hour ish, is amazing.... Um, just implying that udont have to watch a 2hour video.

I want to find ways to combat the problems seen in Pedigree dog breeding, and the Pedigree culture that perpetuates those problems. I immersed myself into that culture via forums to study and understand it. I have found it worse than I expected, not so much for the attitudes that prevail, as for the effects that culture has on its environment and the species as a whole. I see a very real danger that our rights to keep dogs, our abilities to respond to the species, and to breed for purpose is being increasingly eroded. Hoping for discussion that will help change that. The Pedigree Registries mostly include in their constitutions, or mission sta…

How do you think menopause evolved? What evolutionary succes did it give? There are many theories, but no proven of course. They found it in many other animal species. "Menopause has been observed in several species of nonhuman primates, including rhesus monkeys andchimpanzees.Menopause also has been reported in a variety of other vertebrate species including elephants, short-finned pilot whales, iller whales, narwhals, beluga whales, the guppy, the platyfish the budgerigar the laboratory rat and mouse, and the opossum However, with the exception of the short-finned pilot whale, killer whale, narwhals, and beluga whales, such examples tend to be from captive…

I have a question abou evolution that I have thought about for years, maybe someone can help me out with an answer... How is evolution possible with out some kind of creator or prior knowledge?? I get the natural selection proccess, but lets go back to after the big bang, but before animals and such... If we came from nothing and there was nothing before the big bang, where did the knowledge come from for evolution to start. It doesnt make sense to me that we all came from nothing. From the very first organisms that came to life, there had to have been some kind of knowledge that is the backbone of evolution for that organism to come to…

I can count the probabilities of all events that happened a within a week before our conception that if were otherwise we would not be here. It would be probably higher than chances of life not to emerge from chemistry. For someone with IQ>100, this points not towards magical interference, but towards a perspective issue. Like for instance life being a huge system of evolving chemical reactions judged under the perspective of a tiny fraction of results (us) embedded inside the system.

For example: in 2018 Christian Pastors have been using this article Massive Genetic Study Reveals 90 Percent Of Earth’s Animals Appeared At The Same Time Link: https://www.techtimes.com/articles/228798/20180530/massive-genetic-study-reveals-90-percent-of-earth-s-animals-appeared-at-the-same-time.htm Link: So my question is, what tests or questions that will help me find out the truth about Evolution or Creationism? People say follow the evidence, but how do I determine which evidence supports which theory. If Christian Pastors are going around and saying real science confirms the Bible and evolution is a fraud, how do i discover the trut…

Hi guys, I am studying a schematic diagram given here: https://biology.stackexchange.com/questions/34067/are-there-fishes-with-a-double-circulatory-system/34071 I don't know what book is this picture taken from, but I hope it accurately describes the african lungfish circulatory system. If I understand that correctly, the main differences between a fish circulatory system and this, are following: lungs output directly into a separate atrium, instead of mixing output together with other organs that do not contribute to oxygenation into a single atrium lungs have separate input from gills through pulmonary artery, instead of through dorsal aorta that br…

Several studies show religious thought strengthens social cohesion.http://www.overcomingbias.com/2008/03/religious-cohes.htmlhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4958132/http://science.sciencemag.org/content/322/5898/58 This imo means religion is an evolutionary trait. Strengthening of social cohesion is important for many animals like african wild dogs, lions, wolves, whales, dolphins, chickens, penguins, crows, monkeys, apes...It leads to evolutionary succes. Our complex language enabled the origin of real religion, many other animals have religious thought/behavior but lack our complex communicationsystem which prevents the origin of real religion. …

In terms of endosymbiotic theory, is it still possible for organisms to "merge" if their environmental conditions are too hazardous for both organisms? Even if previosly the relationship between the two organisms was that of predator and prey? If so, are there any examples of said organisms throughout history?

Can we reason the fact that during the start of life on earth there was first the development of physical traits but then it started to get diminished and the mental traits grew... i.e. organisms evolved to become more intelligent rather than growing in size?

What part of Africa did Black Americans originate from? Also did some of the Black Americans come from Madagascar? Also why are Black Americans or black people in general muscular and physically superior to other races? The dominate fighting sports like boxing and are amazing at other sports like NFL as well. Why do black people dominate physically demanding tasks? Does it go back to hunter gathering days in wild where it was necessary or is it cause of the slave trade that bringing them to a colder climate made them require less skinny and more muscular and thicker black people? Just questions I am wondering. Thank you in advance.

I'm no expert, but seems to me that there exist no practical uses for Darwin's tree of common descent in applied biology (or in any form of applied science, for that matter). I find this rather curious.

A normal guy feels happy to see a woman's curve, whereas gay won't feel the same happiness when he looks at her. Similarly, someone may find riverside beautiful, another one may not. My question is, can we modify human DNA and make an offspring who will have a different set of responses?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turritopsis_dohrnii Turritopsis dohrnii, the immortal jellyfish, is a species of small, biologically immortal jellyfish[2][3] found in the Mediterranean Sea and in the waters of Japan. It is one of the few known cases of animals capable of reverting completely to a sexually immature, colonial stage after having reached sexual maturity as a solitary individual. Others include the jellyfish Laodicea undulata[4]and Aurelia sp.1.[5] Like most other hydrozoans, T. dohrnii begin their life as free-swimming tiny larvae known as planula. As a planula settles down, it gives rise to a colony of polyps that are attached to the sea-floor. All t…
