So I'm sitting here as rain is pouring down, collecting in puddles, raising the water table, and filling aquifers to the point of almost flooding and I'm just thinking about all the areas in the U.S. that are facing drought. My first thought is, do I really have this excess of water here that I think we do? Is the ground supersaturated with water or has it just not filtered through yet? My second thought is, if there really is all this excess water and flooding, why can't we send it to the drought stricken areas? We have oil and gas pipelines that crisscross our nation, why can't we do the same with water and fill up Californian reservoirs? Just some thoughts. I would lov…

  2. I know that some flies or mosquitoes some parts of Africa could spread serious or even fatal disease to human if bitten. I am wondering why it looks like they will not travel to other continents and reproduce there? Is it because they are not able to travel a long distance or because they are already satisfied with their current environment so they don't need to travel so they are mostly localized?

  3. Covering a garden table when the cover is in contact with the table leaves moisture. Apart from wondering why people buy these these destructive things (I hope I've got it right) and not being a scientist, could you tell me please? How does moisture get there. If you are a handyman (Do it-your-selfer as well, Do you have any ideas? Keep well everyone.

  5. https://www.cnn.com/2022/05/11/business/salton-sea-lithium-extraction/index.html Superheated brine provides easily extractable lithium to help the production of batteries for the many electric cars we need to meet future goals of carbon neutrality. The sea is a geologically interesting location, where two crustal plates grind past each other. So you get both geothermal energy (one of the world's largest geothermal fields) and future electric cars....from one puddle of hot brine. Beautiful.

  6. Anyone have a clue as to how many minerals have colorful salts? The only one that I can find is iridium and if I google colorful salts, all I get is photos or articles about salt that has been dyed different colors.

  7. I've researched pyrite and it says that the faces may be striated. I can't find anything that talks about the patterns I'm seeing here, anyone have any ideal as to what these are and are they common?

  8. The oceans it would seem have a lot of weight that bare down on the Earth's crust, what effect if any do this have on the crust? Also, did the oceans play a role in the creation of the Earth's tectonic plates?

  9. Have a piece of pyrite that is littered with a host of strange microscopic structures, the ones shown here in these photos have been found in a several different configurations. What's really strange about some of these structures is that if you dissolve some of this pyrite in acid, some of these structures will precipitate out of the solution. I have shown these to a number of scientists, but no one can say for sure what they are or why they form in the acid solution.

  10. I have a very odd piece of pyrite that appears to be littered with microscopic spheres. I have read a host of articles about pyrite but can't seem to find anything that can even began to explain how or why this happened. Some of the crystals have spheres embedded halfway in them and I've crushed a few crystals and found spheres inside them. Has anyone every come across anything like this?

  12. I stumbled across an article about my home county of Saginaw,Michigan. Apparently Canadian scientists created a theory that the Saginaw Bay was created by an impact crater 500 Mil years ago. If that was correct, then it was the biggest impact crater in the US. Looking at the terrain, it looks plausible. However, I don't see much info out there about it and I would love to know how factual it is. Any thoughts? Thanks ~ Jennifer

Though this is a science forum, I wonder if there are any HCGW deniers around here. They always amuse me. That aside, there is nothing amusing about HCGW. And what I find most troubling about it is that not even science programs seem willing to speak the truth about it. Maybe it is yet another case of scientists basically having to kowtow to those who pay their salaries. Universities who get much funding from big business or to big business directly. Such as our political leaders do. I recently watched a couple different programs about HCGW. One spoke of a feedback loop and another spoke about the exponential increase in HCGW. But neither stated plainly exa…

If the biblical account of Noah’s flood happened and it rained for long enough would the weight of water on the land surfaces cause the land to “sink” thereby pushing out hot magma into the oceans creating more rain as the oceans heat up eventually reaching a tipping point and covering all the land?

  15. Hello, Something I’ve wondered about is those amazing air bubbles that are sometimes found in underwater caves. In particular, I was wondering how the depth of the water does or does not affects them. In my Figure 1 example, the water is 50 feet deep and air bubble in the cave has 3 feet of air from the top of the cave to the water, and the air pressure in the bubble is the same as sea level. Well, what would happen if the same cave was 1000 feet deep? (see Figure 2.) Would the bubble still have 3 feet of air from the top of cave to the water? Or would the tremendous weight of the water make the bubble much smaller like just 3 inches tall or something? And …

Hi. Magma is supposed to be in underground chambers and branches that may or may not be some day expelled by eruptions. Petroleum is supposed to be in underground chambers and branches too. I have never known of a reported volcanic eruption that the magma flowed/passed trough into a petroleum deposit and both ended on earth surface as a fiery explosive combustion from hydrocarbons fuel + heat + fire + oxygen. Is there a reason why such coincidental path event does not happen ? 😱

I have be wondering a long time about the idea of having 1 super continent (Pangea) and 1 huge ocean about 300 million years in the past. It always sounded a bit unreal to me. Let me explain why. Let me first make clear: i am not putting the tectonic plate movement up to discussion! The theory about that is sound: i assume the geologic science is correct and that the tectonic plates forming the continents as we know now, originate from 1 tectonic plate about 300 million years ago (as detailed in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pangaea). The part of the theory i doubt is the distribution of water around the planet being the same as in the present, giving rise to 1 …

Around 400 miles [650kms] north of the Fijian group of Islands, is a small group called Rotuma, a Polynesian group of Islands, and a dependency of Fiji. While I am fairly familiar with most of the Fijian group, I was less knowledgable of Rotuma. So I did some research and came upon this strange Island named Hafliua sometimes called Split Island. The following photos will reveal the reason.... As is clearly visible, caught between the two walls is a large boulder that has been there throughout recorded history. Some more info on this weird formation..... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hạfliua The Island is obviously part of a sunken ato…

What is the long term effect of wind energy on the planet? Is it really as sustainable as it is made out to be? We see videos about dams in china that supposedly slowed down the rotation of the earth. If wind power was to be scaled out what would the effect be? How sustainable are the parts used in wind farms. There are various articles about them winding up in landfills after a few years what are the challenges around recycling them and how many years do they need to operate to recoup the energy costs associated with building and recycling them?
