Silicone remover / solvent suggestions ?

Featured Replies

Hi all.

As titled; a fiberglass shower walls need removal of silicone leftovers that held a sliding door. The thick of it has been scraped without marring the surface. Need some magic that is not $49.99999 plus $19.9999 shipping plus handling plus tax plus not guaranteed to work plus... 🤔

I'd razor blade the flat surface carefully, then try some mineral spirits. I like the sponges with a scouring side (not metal) to lift the remainder off, then sponge side with soap and water for the rest.

Small bottle of acetone based nail varnish remover.

Here are some effective and non damaging methods for addressing silicone residue on fiberglass shower walls:

Use a hot air gun or hair dryer to heat up

Heating is an effective method for softening silicone gel. Use a hot air gun or hair dryer to heat the remaining silicone evenly, soften it, and then gently scrape it off with a plastic scraper. Pay attention to temperature control to avoid overheating and damaging the surface of the fiberglass.

Applied chemical solvents

For stubborn silicone residue, specialized silicone removers or chemical solvents can be used. There are specialized silicone removers on the market. After spraying according to the instructions, wait for a few minutes for the solvent to dissolve the silicone, and then clean it with a scraper. In addition, alcohol or acetone also have a certain dissolving effect and are suitable for non plastic surfaces.

Using alcohol or white vinegar

If the residual silicone is thin, you can try using alcohol or white vinegar. Pour alcohol or white vinegar onto a cotton ball or cloth, apply it onto silicone gel, let it sit for a few minutes to soften, and then wipe it clean with a scraper or scouring pad. This method is gentle and easy to operate.

Precautions

Ventilation: When using chemical solvents, ensure good ventilation and wear gloves and masks to avoid skin contact or inhalation of irritating gases.

Test: Try the solvent in a concealed location to ensure that it does not damage the surface.

Tool selection: Use a plastic or stainless steel scraper to avoid scratching the surface with metal tools.

The only thing I know of that reliably removes silicones is a saturated solution of potassium permanganates and sodium hydroxide in water.
It attacks glass slowly and almost everything else quickly.

You are likely to end up using a pot scourer.

Is it hazardous on bare hands?

Potassium permanganate is not extremely hazardous but it can cause dermatitis and in high concentration will eat away the skin if not washed off after contact. One of the medical uses is for cleansing wounds.

But the the NaOH does.

It should be noted that a mixture of solid potassium permanganate and glycerol will burst into flames, so potassium permanganate can be considered a fire hazard with regards to contact with organic substances and other readily oxidisable materials.

I've used acetone, no problems. Scrape first, then let acetone soak in for a few minutes.
