  1. Yes, I literally meant the cells have status meetings and use tiny blueprints.

  2. I think it would be useful, helpful, and meaningful to have separate counts for positive and negative reactions on a post, rather than their sum. Also, to see lists of users who gave these positive and negative marks.

  3. While I'm pretty free with the rep points I don't think they really mean much. It may give you a warm fuzzy that someone upvoted your post but you rarely know why. Was I witty? Insightful? Accurate? Complete? Rude? Wrong? Didn't directly answer the question? Too technical? Not technical enough? You like me? Don't like me? You agree with me? Don't like my liberal leanings? You caught my reference to Seinfeld? You misunderstood me? I misunderstood you? Unless someone tells you, the meaning of the rep gives you no more than the most general of hints. Even if you know it came from me, you don't really know why.

  4. I looked but didn't see this woman's great channel. Sabine Hossenfelder and I failed to add the links to the two I have already mentioned. Isaac Arthur and Trey the Explainer, another great channel is E.D.G.E There are so many that get little mention for some really good work. Ohh Ohh, one more Cool Worlds

  5. When I was a kid I remember this really cool trashcan at the zoo. It had a lion's head with an open mouth and was pulling a vacuum. When you got near the mouth with your trash it was sucked in with gusto. I remember running around, along with lots of other kids, searching for trash so we could put it in the lion's mouth. Like with most things when trying to solve a problem, I think designing the carrot deserves considerable effort before resorting to the stick.

  6. You can usually tell ... If Notifications informs you that 3 people reacted to a specific post, and the counter below your post is showing +1, then you know that, of the three votes, one was negative. Its almost like non-local entanglement 😄 .

  7. It would probably make Genady feel better informed, and with less condescension. I'm not sure the software can display both votes, but I think it would be interesting to know how the + and - breaks down (without knowing who voted which way). Seeing a post that has a +2 score doesn't tell you the interesting fact that 16 people voted it down and 18 voted it up.

  8. History of the Earth: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_aOteuWIY8ITg7DQQspG1g History of the universe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtRFmSyL4fSLQkn-wMqlmdA Excellent channels as far as I can tell, and I've been watching them for quite a while. High quality by my standards. Excellent narrative and prose in English, beautiful and precise imagery with text info that you can look up and doesn't disappear in half a second. Loads of information that you can follow up. On top of it all, excellent choices of accompanying music, so you can use then to sit in front of a screen, unwind your troubled self, and let your imagination go back to the first eons of our world, our solar system, our universe, and the origins of life. I highly recommend them.

  10. Allegedly civilized human societies engage in genocide. It is insane, but we have empirical evidence that it happens.

  11. A situation exists No situation exists. There is a conflict between the two, but you can’t assign the contradiction to one or the other, since the conflict is between the two. If you remove either if them, there is no contradiction. So claiming that only one of them leads to a contradiction is blatantly incorrect. No, one premise is “If B is true, C is true.” Another is “B is true” The conclusion is “C is true” Basic syllogisms have two premises (though you can have more), and a conclusion. https://thedecisionlab.com/reference-guide/philosophy/syllogism All this shows is that D is unnecessary. But there is a contradiction between A and D; if you have D, then B is an unnecessary statement. (i.e. you don’t need both B and D. You don’t need C, either.) All you’ve done is add statements to make the situation more complicated. Red herrings. Sloppy argument.

  12. You have to look out for migrating cells with flip charts. They are almost impossible to get rid of and cause inflammation responses everywhere.

  13. !00% agreed. Public spirited people are already converted, but the people who litter generally don't give a toss about public spirit, and no amount of "education" will change them. On my first trip to Canada and the USA, back in 1970, I couldn't believe how litter free the place was, but then I saw the anti-littering signs, and the huge fines that applied to littering. It was immediately obvious why there was so little litter. And the cops were hot on enforcing it. In the uk, fines are paltry, and the cops don't really care. Hence, lots of litter.

  14. In human fossils significant bran growth was seen around 2 million years ago. While cooking would be difficult to pinpoint as the relevant factor, a study in 2004 (Stedman, H., Kozyak, B., Nelson, A. et al. Myosin gene mutation correlates with anatomical changes in the human lineage. Nature 428, 415–418 (2004) https://doi.org/10.1038/nature0235) has found a mutation in a gene that leads to weaker jaw muscles, estimated to have occurred about 2.4 million years ago. In related primates, the jaw muscles are connected to large skull crests, which are absent from modern humans. Thus, the author speculate that when our jaw muscles stopped putting stress on the skull, the crests were not important anymore and might have opened the way to further skull growth. However, it has also been argued that some fossils still showed small brain sizes as recent as 1.8 million years ago (early Homo erectus). Now I don't know much about the consensus in terms of first fire use, but using wiki a range of 1.7 - 2 million years ago are mentioned. While the evidence from that time does not seem definite, it would line up with the fossil data for brain growth and myosin gene mutation. It does appear that fire use 1 million years ago is rather certain, so if we used this time point the largest discrepancy between fire use and brain growth would be around 1 million years ago (though certainly not millions). I have also read that folks speculate that beyond cooking meat, the simple act of pre-processing food (e.g. mashing and cutting) could have contributed to the lack of need of large jaw muscles and such tools were around since at least 2.6 million years.

  15. No the big rip requires the negative kinetic energy term to occur. However current evidence support that the big rip as being unlikely to occur as the cosmological constant shows strong supportive evidence of being constant. Provided it remains constant the heat death scenario is more likely

  17. Can't say that I'm in favor of the Hitler Youth model of litter control. Do we really want the government turning citizens against each other for the righteous goal of nailing scofflaws who drop a gum wrapper in the parking lot?

  18. So, an all-knowing scientist/prophet has written the holy text of the big bang theory and we should all believe, because those who do not believe in the exact wording shall be punished. Intepretations of the holy words are not allowed, nor any type of criticism, especially, if you are not familiar with the higher spheres of cosmology and do not hold a certain title granted by exclusive members of this high society. Is this the science we deserve after paying our taxes? Lol (common, this is a little joke, please laugh)

  19. Right , so you are saying a tiny tiny portion of space existed before the big bang that was surrounded by nowhere ? Sorry but it sounds absurd because it is absurd . Nobody can prove that nowhere ever ''existed'' , it is more likely that there was somewhere meaning lots more space than a tiny tiny portion .

  20. The vulva is the female external genitalia collectively. Laymen commonly call that a vagina but that term is not accurate. There seems to be no formal scientific collective term for male external genitalia but slang terms including manhood and package. What might be a good scientific term for male external genitalia as a whole corresponding to vulva for females? VULVA is Latin for "covering, womb, or matrix". What single Latin word might best describe the whole of the male external parts? The Latin word for "rooster is "gallus". Does a bird's head with wattles not closely resemble male parts?

  22. Yes. Power comes in degrees. If I had absolute power, they wouldn't just get a fine. I was following three school kids down the footpath last year, and one of them was a great big fat tub of lard, the other two normal build. The fattie was eating an ice-cream on a stick, and he just threw the wrapper straight down on the pavement. I felt like kicking his fat arse. Even one of the other two called him a name. Of course I didn't say or do anything, because I know it would be me who ended up in the shit if I did. If I was in real power, he would be in the stocks, and anyone who wanted to could kick his fat ass. Share the power.

  23. Genetically-inferior men may still have sex with mutually-consenting women as long as they get a vasectomy beforehand to terminate their inferior genes for good. Geneticallly-inferior means having a family history of known hereditary health issues.

  24. Man should seriously breed Homo sapiens for longevity, strength and overall health both physically and mentallly. The healthiest humans tend to be the most productive in society and the most sexually attractive as well. It's a win-win situation to breed healthy and strong people. People with known hereditary health issues should be taken out of the gene pool. These people who are not genetically fit to breed should unselfishly adopt children in need of homes if they have the means to do so. People without sufficient stable economic means should not parent children at all. The world is well overpopulated as it is. Also, women who are about to become pregnant, are pregnant or are lactating should not drink or smoke and eat junk food. They should not put any perfumes or cosmetics upon their bodies. This risks fetal injury and fetal deformity. Of course, no healthy human should smoke, vape, chew tobacco, eat junk food, drink much or do dope.
