Does anyone know if methanol's a suitable cleaning solvent for cleaning lab glassware? Or would I be better off going for something more expensive like propanone or propan-2-ol? I know methanol's more toxic, but that shouldn't be a problem as long as the area's well-ventilated, right?

Hello. I am doing a mock research proposal to study the advance and retreat of ice on Greenland and Antarctica. For this proposal, I have to create a budget. Hypothetically, I would need to purchase some ice-penetrating radar equipment. Does anyone have ANY idea how much these things cost? Thanks a lot.

I can't seem to find the right information for a home built double slit experiment (using a laser.) Which, as you've probably guessed, I want to build...on the cheap. So here's a few questions, if anyone can help... What's the most suitable casing, plus material for projecting the light on ? What's the most affordable laser that would suit this experiment ? Where can I get cheap slides and gratings ? I'm pretty sure I saw some on ebay, but I'll have another look. Thanks awfully

Hi everybody! I will be doing a practical report tomorrow but I don't know what one of the equipments used in the experiment is called. I tried to research it but I couldn't find out more. It sort of looks like a comboplate...but I really don't know. Any ideas on how I can find out more quicker? Any reliable sources? It's sort of hard to describe how it looks like...basically it is like a white tile with circular indentations all the same length in diameter. In the experiment we poured a solution into the "circular indentations" and recorded our observations within a restricted period of time. Any help will be appreciated!

I wanted to be able to separate some organic mixtures at home inexpensively and relatively efficiently so I thought I could make a column chromatography apparatus. Now, I figured that for my purpose I could use either glass or plastic tube (glass preferably) of about 2cm diameter or less, I could also mix up the mobile phase for transfer depending on the separation type and I could use a syringe top to produce some positive pressure, but one thing that I would like to know is this: Assuming that I could use some very fine sand for the stationary phase, I'd like to know what would be the largest particle size that could produce a useful separation and how long would the tu…

I obtained a 3.5 feet long flint glass tube and an erlenmeyer flask to use as a distillation apparatus. The Teflon tape wraps the rubber stopper since that distilling acid's can dissolve the rubber. I used my LPG (Liquid Propane Torch) to bend the flint glass tube while blowing into it sightly to avoid closure of the tube and not too hard as to pop open the tube. I have yet to set up a proper condenser unit on my apparatus but will be working on it soon.

Hi, I'm not quite sure if this is the right place to ask project questions, but here goes.. =) In the future, I would like to make a fuel sensor/metering system for my car that would monitor the flow along the fuel line and give me a reading in real-time of how many mL of fluid are being consumed. I've decided to put off setting myself and my property ablaze for the time being, and would like to attempt this on a simple fountain first. I've searched the web, and haven't found any small digital flow sensors that can be attached to a tube and output the data in any usable manner. Where can I look? Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? Any help…

Hi folks, With the ubiquity and cheapness of web and other video cameras these days, and their usefulness for recording rapidly evolving events in the lab, I was wondering if there's any utilities to help use them in a lab setting. I'm thinking of software that makes it easy to obtain measurements from the recorded video, or from stills of that video. Examples might be measurements of time elapsed, measurements of angles, easy calibration of an image to a scale. Other things that might be useful would be direct control of gain on a webcam during the capture phase such that one could make estimates of relative intensity for flames, glows, or incandescence. Even if it …

here`s a very simple Water electrolysis piece of apparatus I made a few days ago, the design is Very Simple, and the materials are easily obtained from most any glassware supplier. and: I use NaOH soln in it as the electrodes are plain Stainless steel wire, If you can afford Pt electrodes then H2SO4 soln it usually preferred.

Probably not the right forum; perhaps 'experiments' or 'projects' would be better, but.. I'm noodling up a variable-voltage power supply (~0-35VDC), and I'm using a Radio Shack 1mA FSV 15V panel meter to display the output. (15Kohms feed resistor to get the appropriate voltage drop.) Since the voltage range of the supply goes to about double that, I thought I'd put in a switch to make the appropriate changes to the circuit to allow the meter to display 0-30VDC, and add the notations to the meter face. I want to put a shunt across the meter to keep from damaging it in an over-voltage situation, and also give an indication of the fact with an LED. Currently I'm s…

I am trying to make a small hand held torch with the light being emitted from the end of a thin, slightly bent, tube. To keep the weight down I am using ordinary rechargable batteries. There are several small bulbs available but they all seem to have "screw in" fittings. I would like some that just push in (like the ones in a car dashboards). Can anyone suggest any sources please? I've been wanting for a while to try out extracting different scents from different plants but I'm lacking one crucial piece of apparatus, namely distillation set (or more precisely, the condenser part). They are available for purchase at very expensive prices so I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to make one that would work for my purpose... Considering other equipment, I have beakers, flasks, round bottom flasks, funnels, tubes, I have water and heat source etc... I was thinking of using polystyrene test tubes and then cutting and melting them such to make something that resembles a condenser, but before I go on with that I just wanted to see if anyone …

Hello, I'm doing a bit of research for my company and figured I'd try going straight to the end-user on this one. We're getting into the glassware business as an extention of plastic bottles/containers and we're attempting to provide glass bottles and jars that are able to be used in a wide variety of applications. While I know that's a bit vague, essentially we want a container that most people will be able to use for most applications. We've narrowed things down to thermoset caps with a PTFE liner. I do have a few questions that I was hoping some of you could provide information on: 1.) Are there any industry standards in regards to the caps concerning …
