Experiments

Fun science experiments you've done that you'd like to share with the world.

  1. Started by woelen,

This is the place, where you can write about the experiments YOU have done, or are planning to do. This is not the place to write about something, which others have done, and it also is not the place to talk about some school lab, which you have to do. It should be about your own experiences, you have chosen out of interest. What we want to achieve with this forum is that people actually DO science and not only talk about science. Experiments can be described for all sciences. The most obvious thing may be chemistry, physics, electronics. But also mathematical experiments (e.g. computing and investigating properties of certain mathematical objects, recreational math…

did you know that a standard LPG Bunsen burned on a Blue flame gives just over .25g of Downwards thrust, and only .06g of thrust on a yellow flame.

here`s the place to add/list any quick and easy experiments that can be done either at home or with simple equipment. this is NOT a thread for Chat, and all experiments entered here MUST BE according to the SFN safety/legality regulations. please keep all entries as complete and exact as possible. where possible provide links with pictures (not a requirement). All subjects are welcome, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Psychology etc... single post... single experiment

  4. As a sort of experiment, I let my physics textbook slide down two railings. The first railing was a very rough surface, and the physics textbook would only slide about a quarter of the way down and then stop. I then took my physics book and slid it down another railing. This railing was a smooth surface, but about the same height, and it slid all the way down in I would estimate ~2.0 s. Now, I know this has to do with static frictional forces. What I’m curious about is why did this happen, in detail? Does it have to do with the structure of the surfaces at the molecular level?

lets start to build a true rocket armament for the philippines i really enjoy watching and searching in internet and so many kids scientist experimenting their own version of rocket, and ofcourse im one of them wasting of time firing rocket in the backyard. haha but what if i can convert it as a true philippine military armament so that it can be a little help for them, i just want to know who is expertise in explosive and we can build explosive rocket as one. my latest rocket experiment rocket can be fly 500 meters by a succesful mixture of potassium nitrate and sugar.

Hey guys! I'm going to make a potato canon and need a spark generator to ignite the fumes. I was thinking about a 9v battery because of its power and size. What I want it to do is basically be able to make a spark over a gap every 2 or 3 minutes. I have no electrical experience so please be specific. I can solder though.

I`ve just discovered something Very strange. I`de set up my Hoffman Voltameter a while back, and after filling both sides H2 and O2 respectively, I put it to one side and thought no more of it. but Slowly the levels were starting to drop unil it had swung towards Negative pressure!? a Vacuum of sorts. I suspected that it was acting as a type of barometer, but I thought I`de check the carbon electrodes for Voltage anyway (I have no idea what made me think of that), and sure enough there was Voltage present:eek: 2 identical electrodes in dilute Sulfuric acid with O2 in one column and H2 in the other. so I refilled them to Positive pressure again and I`m gettin…

I’m looking for a composite or natural material that’s very light, and can be heated to a high temperature with propane gas, then gas turned off and put unit into a small contained area to act as a heater. Weight is an important factor.

  10. "...the heart is removed from the water and a non-wired up heart is placed in the same tank of water and begins to beat." Sooo I study osteopathy. I'm really enjoying the course, I get to work in a clinic and first-hand see the treatments implemented and how people overcome their pain through their treatment. One of my lecturers isn't a qualified osteopath however, they are more like a form tutor come first year guide into science, complimentary medicine and ethics. They're nice enough, though I really don't think they likes any of the work that I've handed in. They also have a high respect for homeopathy and reiki. Don't get my wrong, I'm not going to start bei…

  11. This was just a little expirement that went on inside my head while I was on one of my walks. It seemed interesting at the time, so I'm going to share it with you. We have an x axis that represents all real numbers, and a y axis that represets all imaginary numbers, i^2=-1. The idea of a whole-nother number line sounds fascinating; and to some, literally unbelievable. However, dispite some people's disbelief, the imaginary number line and the complex plane is perfectly sound from a mathematical standpoint. If we managed to solve something impossible like -1^0.5, then maybe we can do the same with another impossible function like a/0. A person (I can't remember who…

  12. I have done some basic tests with air being sucked through tubes rough and smooth with rough and smooth inner cores and measuring the head of water at the suction end of a 1400 watt vacuum cleaner with all filters removed. I just wanted to see what effect it has on a engine intake manifold there are some interesting side effects too so don't do it. Outer tubes 42 mm ID 590 mm Length. Inner tubes 33 mm OD 340 mm + 60 mm sticking out and caped off at outside end to increase suction head. A 4.5 mm gap concentric between tubes provided by 3 screws at each end. 1 outer tube roughed up by wire wheel and 1 inner tube as well. The clear tubing and measurement is on…

Hey hey guys, The other day I posted a science experiment where I show how water rise inside a glass with fire in it. I explained the process wrong, though, and Shane Killian, along with some other fellas, corrected me. That was actually quite cool - I think it's one of the best things about science and learning, to have people think about things and criticize them. That's how we learn. First off, the videos are here (both): http://www.smarterthanthat.com/experiments/a-physics-party-trick-that-sucks-liquid/ Anyhoo, I was thinking about this quite a lot, and I am not sure if what causes the effect is the heat.. What I was thinking, is that the fire …

Hi, I'm trying to do an experiment for air which I can do at home. What I need is an air pump which can suck in air then expel it into something. I've been looking on amazon for air pumps but obviously just because it says it's an air pump doesn't mean it's going to do what I want. So do you guys know any air pumps that fit my specifications? I'm hoping to buy something really cheap, pretty small and easy to carry. Cheers

  16. Seeing as it's Victoria Day weekend, I decided to carry out a little experiment with a firework. I've always been fond of amateur pyrotechnics, so I decided to see what would happen if I put the core of a simple 'Air Bomb' firework wrapped in electrical tape, just to make sure it didn't somehow fall apart, into a can with some sparkler powder, and then light it. For any of you who don't know what an 'Air Bomb' is, it's basically a really simple firework where you light the fuse, something shoots out of the end, which a few seconds later makes a loud bang, and that's it. So I figured that more or less the same would happen here. What actually happened, however, I can't…

Hi everyone, new to this forum =) I have a science assignment where i have to conduct an experiment. It has to be one of the ones where there's a control group and a group you test on. Something like the typical "lets grow some beans in water and some beans in soil and see which one grows faster". I want to do something fun and interesting though, nothing that cliche =D Has anyone got any suggestions? i don't want to spend too much money and i've for a reasonably amount of time. Ive had a look around the posts and thought about memory test type stuff like whether doing memory exercises makes people remember better and whether you remember things better ea…

Hello, I am new here and several of us have a few questions. We have seen several video's like this. 1. Are these actually powering a bulb? 2. How long would last if never stopped? 3. Any fire danger? 4. I have a retrieving that says it will lift 800 lbs. 5. Any danger of doing the same thing with the retrieving magnet? 6. How big a light will it power? Thanks for looking. I am retired and have some kids asking me. I wonder also.

  21. hey, im probably one of the first ones to say that im totally against mumbo jumbo crap, and i have a very scientific based mind. so i was wondering if anyone knows about any experements actually trying to varify the existence of god, or the explanation of how karma could work? im actually thinking about doing some myself right now if no one has. i mean, im not spiritual or anything like that, but i do notice many things that suggest the existence of karma, or god in some way, wich could be coincidenses, but the odds are high. so, id like to have an already done opinion free test. like, back in middle school, i remember running away, well, prior to that it was sto…

If you place a laser pointer on its side on a table and point it at the wall across the room, there will be a straight beam of light, of course. Then, if you twist the laser pointer on the table only 2-5 millimeters, the location where the laser was hitting the wall will move much greater than 2-5 millimeters; it will move maybe an inch or more. So, a very small movement of only a few millimeters on the table produces a much larger effect/offset on the wall across the room-maybe an inch or more. If you increased the distance from instead of across the room to a mile, then twisting the laser pointer the same 2-5 millimeters on the table would offset the laser at the other …

Hello, Thanks for reading this, I created a automatic airgun design with my friend and i want to check the design to see if it works. I tried keeping it as simple as it gets but without loosing any performance. I attached a photo demonstrating the design. If there's a part that you don't understand please reply and i'll explain it. The point of this post is to see if my design works. Thanks for your attention

I mixed some baby powder (2 tsp) and some water (1 oz) together and microwaved it just to see what would happen and it came out chunky and gelatinous. Did I make some crude form of gelatin or was it something else? The baby powder says it is made up of corn starch, tricalcium phosphate, and some added lavender/chamomile fragrance stuff. I think I just made some really nasty gelatin, but I'm not sure. (sorry about the units, but I'm working with kitchen utensils and am too lazy to convert them. )
