" The core of our technologies use the Lorentz force imbalances generated by our thrusters to generate thrust without requiring on-board propellant. There has been a lot of erroneous information in media articles regarding Cannae’s upcoming launch of a cubesat mission into LEO. To clarify our previous post and press release: Cannae is not using an EmDrive thruster in our upcoming launch. Cannae is using it’s own proprietary thruster technology which requires no on-board propellant to generate thrust. " http://cannae.com/the-technology/

The formula for kinetic energy is E=[1/2]mv^2 and the formula for momentum is P=mv. I ran into these in physics class long ago and was really bothered by the first formula. How can energy go up as the square of the velocity?

Purely theoretical question here after watching the depressurization scene in The Martian: If you had a habitat in the shape of a straight line on Mars featuring room after room with automatic doors, and there was a major breach in the exterior of one end of the habitat, how quickly would depressurization occur? Would a centralized habitat computer be able to close any doors in time to avoid complete depressurization and save any humans in those rooms?

Hello, I'm sorry if I didn't word the title better. Summary: I'm trying to detect sunlight while the LED luminaires are present and turned on. I know it may sound kind of strange but this is the idea: say you have a lounge. The LED ceiling light is on, and at the same time, natural light is coming from outside through the window. And the natural sunlight is sufficient, thus the LED lighting clearly is a waste of energy and one more reason to increase carbon emission. But often times people are too busy with themselves to care about this. You just finished an important meeting and are thinking about something really stressful, no one would notice the light is o…

I am not tech savvy. But I like to solve quiz relates math and physics. I was solving such questions and come across this question. "On a cloudy day, a sealed packet of potato chips is taken to the top of a mountain. The packet is found to be blown up like a balloon." What is the reason behind it? I found two reasons as per my knowledge, 1. The air outside the packet is hotter than the air inside the packet or 2. The air outside is now at a lower pressure than the air inside the packet. Which one is the right reason? Please guide me in detail.

Space is important in our daily lives and to the whole universe. It provides the way for various physical as well as chemical processes etc. to take place. Space is so common to us that we still don't know it's deepest nature. What is space and it's composition? We obviously know that one of the function of space is to provide an arena for all physical processes to take place. And general relativity make use of space for gravity to work. Now my another question is, what are other functions of space? Why space is the way it is? Feedbacks are very much appeciated to cultivate ideas for the advancement of our scientific reasoning...

(i) Life's meaning probably occurs on the horizon of optimization: (source: mit physicist, Jeremy England proposes new meaning of life) (ii) Today, artificial intelligence exceeds mankind in many human, cognitive tasks: (source: can we build ai without losing control over it?) (source: the wonderful and terrifying implications of computers that can learn) (iii) The creation of general artificial intelligence is so far, mankind's largely pertinent task, and this involves (i), i.e. optimization. The human brain computes roughly 10^16 to 10^18 synaptic operations per second. (iv) Mankind has already created br…

Here's a little wiki article if you don't know what gematria is. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gematria Even though this is a topic usually associated with the bible in modern times, in reality it predates the bible and I have absolutely no religious intention behind this thread. I was going to make this thread in the mathematics section, but this is something a bit deeper than simple equations. Gematria is a system that gives the letters of an alphabet numerical value. It originates in Babylon and Greece, (who of course used mathematics and algebra.) Anyways, there are certain strange synchronicities between words and their numerical values. For examp…

So, the definition of a vacuum is ''space devoid of matter'', which is straightforward. However, to make a claim of a space without matter, you would have to say ''from point A to point B, there is no matter'' (or ''in between these end points there is no matter'' if you consider 3 dimensions). Scientific papers say that there exists no vacuum in the universe because even in the most desolate parts of the universe there are about 3 atoms in a cubic meter. To me, this makes no sense and I drew this shitty illustration to help explain why: EDIT: I am at work now and can't access the image. Imagine a cubic meter of space with 3 atoms in it. What I referred to below as the g…

('A') It took billions of years of evolution on planet earth, for a phenomenon called 'non beliefism' to emerge, and I am its inventor. ('B') 'Non beliefism' is a framework that may enhance thought, while underlining that belief is non necessary, for belief opposes science. ('C') Here is one of non beliefism's premise sequences: Belief may constitute non-science. Science in contrast, shan’t encode non-science. Thereafter, it is non-scientific to believe.…ie scientific evidence shan’t contain non-scientific-evidence. ★★★★★★★★★★ In simpler words: It is non-scientific to believe, as the concept of bel…

Hi everyone, I was solving some real time physics question and come across this question. I have tried to find out the perfect answer but couldn't satisfied with my analysis. Can anyone guide me? On a cold, dry winter day your glasses fog up when you go indoors after being outside for a while. Why is that? And if you go back outside with your glasses still fogged up, they quickly clear up. Why is that?

OK, I'm new here, and not a college educated guy or one with any professional connection to science or teaching, and don't have the math background to grasp the equations of physics and astrophysics. Just someone interested in astronomy and astrophysics, as well as some others like evolution. But I have a few questions I would like to run past posters. I've seen some things said in books like Brian Greene's The Elegant Universe that seem more guesswork than solid proof, and the following comes from this sort of "it just has to be" mentality that I see in some of Greene's explanations. The following has to do with the relay of information faster than the SoL, o…

I was wondering what the temperature beyond the event horizon of a black hole might be, would the compression of matter towards the singularity heat material up to a level comparable to the Planck temperature, or would the gravitational forces restrict all vibration, even down to the quantum level? Which lead me to thinking, if that was the case, would a singularity have any zero-point energy, or would the singulariy violate Heisenberg's uncertainty principle?

"My name is John Titor. I m back again from 2045. You people must be wondering what happened to me in 2001? The answer is, I was able to go to 2036 but time machine struck me over in 2056 .....so I tried my best to get back to 2036 the day I came( march 15 ) ..And I was able to do my mission successfully...now I m here in 2017 again...to a another task ....this Science forum is the best way I choose to introduce me again.....all have chanced...now..here I got a nice community...if anyone needs help from me about quantum physics in 2045...I m here again..and as in 2001 this time I m not alone..i got my friends here..soo anyone?" Yesterday I posted a forum..no one ga…

Hello, I haven't had much of an education and am not a scientist, my driving license is my only paper qualification, so I don't expect an easy ride on here. What I would like is good manners which I haven't found on the two previous forums I've posted on being called twat, liar and moron lol. I have invented a motor that runs on electricity but does not use electromagnets. I don't have measuring instruments apart from an AVO, so my comparisons and claims can be easily challenged. I started posting on forums that I could use others objections and arguments to refine my invention. In one week of battling non believers, I simplified the motor from 47 mo…

You often hear how Tesla is underrated and uncredited for his work. You hear how other inventors stole all of his work and presented it as his own. You hear how he had the key to unlimited and free energy It is somewhat of a mainstream opinion among non-scientists to think of Tesla as the greatest genius who ever lived. I noticed that no one mentions him here and that people are more objective. It can't be a coincidence that scientists have less regard for him than regular people. It can't be because they are ''jealous of his achievements and support the system''. That makes no sense. So my question is how much of this is true? Is he possibly overrated? Don't…

They have let me out of the bin for a while. I am wondering how for progressed science is on the separation on electrons, with respect of spooky action at a distance, has any one separated them (at a distance) and what were the results. Difficult to find the answer on the net.

I don't get how they derive (2.18). I get how they derive (2.12) but I don't get what they can do different in (2.8)-(2.12) in order to end up with (2.18)? That is I don't get how they get the term [math]- \gamma F \frac{dp}{dx} [/math] The text is taken from: http://pages.physics.cornell.edu/~sethna/StatMech/EntropyOrderParametersComplexity.pdf

Imagine a children's roundabout, with vertical wheels around the circumference, pointing towards the centre. Each wheel has a weight on it's outside edge making each wheel unbalanced. If we spin all these wheels together in synchronisation, and the weights go up on the outside and the down nearer the centre, would there be a slight upward lift when the weights are moving up on the outside, and a slight downward pressure when they are going down towards the centre. If the answer is yes, then my thought is that if we could keep the unbalanced weight on the outside, always going up then we would have a slight lift. So, if remove the weights so the wheels are balanced…
