The composition of space and relation to matter and energy

Space is important in our daily lives and to the whole universe. It provides the way for various physical as well as chemical processes etc. to take place. Space is so common to us that we still don't know it's deepest nature.

What is space and it's composition?

We obviously know that one of the function of space is to provide an arena for all physical processes to take place. And general relativity make use of space for gravity to work.

Now my another question is, what are other functions of space? Why space is the way it is?

Feedbacks are very much appeciated to cultivate ideas for the advancement of our scientific reasoning... :)

This is more philosophy than science.

There is already a very long thread called "What is space made of"

This subject comes up very frequently. For example, this might be of interest: http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/97105-is-space-time-a-physical-entity-or-a-mathematical-model/
