Hello all I recently downloaded and tried to install a newer version of Ubuntu. It appears to have installed but now the computer wont boot. Looking in the bios, it says "Primary IDE not detected" i can boot from the Ubuntu CD and access files etc on the hard drive, so that rules out a physical connection problem. All I can put it down to is the upgrade from Ubuntu 8 to Ubuntu 11. previous set-up was: Hard drive partitioned into two - 25% Windows XP, and 75% ubuntu 8. On boot up, it would ask me which operating system I wanted to use. I'd select which one and all was fine. On installing the new ubuntu 11, It asked me if i wanted to simply upgrade from 8.0 to 1…

  2. Hey guys! My computer's print spooler service is not running. Anybody got any ideas on how I can fix this? My computer also had a recent virus but now it's gone. What can I do? I can't print! I'm not sure what's wrong with my computer and why my print spooler service won't run. When I now go to: start--> run (services.msc) The service window shows the print spooler service as "started" and on "automatic". The PRC (Procedure remote call) also appears as "started" and on "automatic" so I'm not sure what's the problem.

Never mind, figured it out, however what does it mean (on a mac) when a it says - your files name - could not be handled because numbers cannot open files in the "numbers document" format.. I have numbers on my computer (the one which gave the above message) and i expected it open like the other files i had which were in the same database type format.

  4. How to Completely clean your Computer and Install/Reinstall windows This tutorial is intended to help people who need to restore their computers. Malware and spyware can infect your registry, so using a backup partition isn't always the best thing. Actually this way is a bit more technical and in my opinion more efficient. Other than that reason this tutorial is for people with a broken OS back up partion or another issue that denies them access to it. Steps: Step 1:Booting your CD: -When you turn on your computer Putt your OS(2000,xp,vista,7) disk inside and then wait for the computer to boot…

I'm going to put together a new rig in a month or two (when I get my tax returns!). I've pasted the specs I had in mind below, so feel free to comment on anything other than what I'm asking. My biggest concern right now is the motherboard. The reason I picked that one is due to it having EFI, 6 GB/s SATA, 2xPCI-E and supporting 1600 MHz memory. However, knowing approximately nothing about motherboards, I don't know if it's the best choice in that price range, or even if it's at all decent. I'm going to use the computer for gaming, thus the graphics card. Future plans involve getting another GTX 560 to run SLI, as well as maybe overclocking the processor. However t…

So I am thinking of buying a NAS server to back up my computers, and serve as an easy way to share files. I would be using this for home use, with probably 5-6 computers running both Mac OS and Windows. I have been looking at both products made Buffalo Technology and Synology, but it seems like everything has mixed reviews. Does anyone have any suggestions on good NAS servers, or comments on bad ones to avoid?

I downloaded the trial version of IDM. I downloaded a patch from somewhere. I patched it and it worked okay till it detected the patch and stopped itself. Now, whenever I install any version of this, I get the same message. Message goes like,"IDM has been registered with a fake serial number. IDM is now exiting." Can I undo the patch from registry or whatever and use the trial version. There is no undo option in the patch file. Thanks

Hello I have a very strong background in Mathematics. The problem at this point is I have very little knowledge of Computer Science. I'm beginning to believe the future requires a stronger understanding of Computer Science. I'm starting this thread with the hopes some members will be able to point me in the right direction in terms of textbooks to use to begin learning about Computer Science. I know Computer Science is a pretty broad term. So, specifically what I would like to learn is how to manage privacy and security on my own. I have read too many articles regarding Apple, Google and the like using information from searches to even personal e-mails to …

I just got a brand new Seagate 500GB external drive. It came bundled with stuff I didn't want, so I formatted the drive. And that's something I'm not used to as it's my first time attempting it. So I probably screwed up. The first thing I did is to right-click on the drive letter and select "Format". I guessed XP would determine the best option, and since "NTFS" was highlighted I clicked that. So after forever, the drive's clear of everything and so I start moving files over. No problem. Then when I go to delete or move some of those files later on, I get an error. Seems all folders were given a "read-only" attribute. I try unchecking those, but I'm denied …

Hardware: Dell T7400 workstation, dual processor @ 300 G SAS hard drives, Raid 2 configuration, Windows XP 32 bit HP 7400c flatbed scanner, USB connection Background: Things were running fine, including scanner operation, until a software problem, perhaps introduced in a Windows update caused the machine to fail to recognize the existence of the hard drives -- would not boot up. This was corrected by wiping the hard drives and re-installing Windows XP. Of course all data was lost and all software needed to reinstalled. (Makes one wonder about the usefulness of Raid 2) . The Problem: The scanner comes with a software package, HP Pro Scan. The software appears to in…

Does anyone have any experience with this? Recently, I switched to BT Broadband as they were offering a great deal PLUS a free Home hub router. This is fantastic piece of kit using Vista wirelessly - I have dual boot - likewise using Ubuntu when wired. But I cannot get it working wirelessly using Ubuntu. Sadly the BT helpline (in Bangalore, or wherever) merely shrugs and says "we do not support Linux". Meantime I have gone back to my trusty Netgear router, but would like to use the Home hub if possible. And I categorically refuse to be a regular Microsoft user. Any tips?

  14. Spreadsheet question: How do I get all the information from a column copied into a column of a different worksheet? Sheet one has Column A with information in it. I want to be able to make changes to information throughout various rows in column A (including deleting and adding new rows with information) and have Column A of Sheet 1 mirrored in Column A of Sheet 2. How do I do this? I'm using Google Docs, but I think it's similar to Openoffice and/or Excel.

So, I was talking to someone recently, and they said that rdiff-backup is basically the same thing as BackupPC. However, I didn't believe that, as I was with the understanding that BackupPC differently does one major thing: 1) Makes a pool so that no file ever, despite ever being moved in the folder tree, needs to be copied over again. This is correct, yes? And rdiff-backup does not do this, right? I'm using rdiff-backup at the moment. I backed things up. Afterward, I renamed a directory with files in it. From there, I backed things up again. It would appear that rdiff-backup had decided to backup all of the files again along with the folder they are in. …

I had issues a few months back with trying to get my PC to run Ubuntu. I had it to where it was installed and running but every now and again it crashed. It was particularly a problem when switching between Windows and Ubuntu and it got so bad a couple of times that my file system corrupted and data became maliciously viral in an undirected sort of way. I narrowed it down to my video card a Diamond HD5770 which is a pretty sweet card IMHO. In the end I upgraded my bios (which had disabled smart fan permanently until today,) upgraded my power supply (twice) and reinstalled everything a dozen times over. I found that if I used SpeedFan and kept my fan at 50% of jet eng…

During my search of a normal website, I clicked to check out some of their podcasts. Within seconds, my AVG antivirus came up with a list of folders that had become infected with a Trojan virus. The first was a Trojan Ramnit-E. What was worse, the AVG antivirus became infected and I had to replace it with Avast antivirus. The second virus seemed to be a rootkit virus and, after loading itself over my Sygate firewall with ease, the computer shut down and restarted. I could not restore the system back to a pre-infection date. I understand that rootkit viruses can 'hide' inside the OS leaving a 'back door' for the hacker to remove. I cannot remove it even after usi…

My computer was recently infected by the virus, Security Tool 2011, a few days ago. Now the virus is gone (as far as I know at least) however I cannot use the printer for some reason. I think it has something to do with the virus. Anyway, how can I fix this problem and print? Whenever I try to print a message displays saying that a printer has not been installed. It then gives me an option of installing one however another message then pops up and says that the "printer spooler service is not running". What does this mean? How can I fix this problem? It is very annoying. I also tried going to the site, http://www.technipages.com/fix-for-the-p… and following the instru…
