A basic question . . . do light and water interact because they 'use' the same part of the electromagnetic spectrum?

Hi everyone, can you help me to solve my concern? The PH level of my account is 11.2 with a total volume of 5.5m3. In this regards, how many liters /ml of HCL do I need to reduce its level between 6-9. your help is highly appreciated. regrads, vonzkie

Hello again guys Guess what am i going to talk about. safety in the lab :p. My question is about dicloromethane this time. I have a very specific question about this stuff. I was performing an experiment in the hood and i wanted to do TLC with dichroromethane and methanol (98/2 % ) I used 49ml of DCM and 1 ml of Meoh and i put my tlc plate inside the chamber for TLC. The absorber was at high level inside the hood but the glass of the hood was not closed all the way down cause i could not work. My head of course was outside. I had an acidic odor for a long (like an acidic sensation on my nostrils) and a bit cough when i came back home. Is DCM so hazardous in such am…

  4. Hello again guys. I have on more question about "work safe" cause for me and i think for everyone is a very important issue in a chem lab and sometimes there is no the right education on this. My question is very specific and its about handling acetonitrile (a volatile organic solvent). I perform preparative Hplc cause i want to isolate a some fractions and my mobile phases are water and acetonitrile. The prep hplc is not in an absorber. Its placed in a big lab room. I collect my fractions in conical flasks. I wear glasses, apron and gloves as they have consulted me. I dont wear a mask and i am thinking. Is ACN very toxic to human? Sometimes i feel a strange acidic o…

I am trying to prepare a 5% NaCl Solution in Glycerol without success. Theoretically it would be possible to dissolve up to 6,7% NaCl in Glycerol, but obviously something stupid I'm should be doing that I can't make it. Does anyone have an explanation (and may be a solution) to my problem? Thanks

Hello guys. I want to ask something relative to HCL. I perfomed a liquid liquid extraction and i used 0,1 M hydrocloric acid for my experiment and then i performed neutralisation with NaOH but the final extract was a bit acidic (that what i was expected cause i used a lot of HCL). After this i collected my acidic extract (in solvent ether ) and i evaporated in rota evaporator to take my sample in "dust". Then i put my vial in vaccuum to get rid of any moistyre. My question is: Is it possible for HCL to "survive in a vial without moisture at room temperature? It will lost as a gas or it will remain inside (a small quantity). I felt like there was an acidic odor from this v…

  7. Hello everyone. I want to ask something. Maybe i am too scared with no reason. I inhaled a bit of acetic acid in the lab cause someone used a rota evaporator with acetic acid as organic solvent and at a point i was too close for about 20 minutes and i had a weird smell of acetic acid but because i am not so familiar yet with this stuff i was not sure it was acetic acid. It was not so annoying but after i left the lab i felt i cannot breath properly (maybe it is because i am too anxious). I also have a feeling like i want to cough all day. Maybe i am thinking too much i dont know but i want to know if its very dangerous cause i am try to learn every possible danger in the …

  9. Hi all, Please bare in mind I am not a chemist or know much about chemicals and I am hoping that this place is the best place to ask in regards to this topic. So about a week ago I decided to refresh my silicon sealant around my shower tray (easy job I thought) For the removal of the old sealant I decided to use this product - http://mymsds.henkel.com/mymsds/0001.2253573.0195.en.MSDS_UT_GB.30542341.0.GB.pdf https://www.screwfix.com/p/unibond-silicone-sealant-remover-300ml/75756?tc=BT2&ds_kid=92700023141674204&ds_rl=1249484&ds_rl=1245250&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI9sGBoYSk2wIVLbXtCh3lggUbEAQYASABEgJXW_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CI-r4K…

Hi guys, thank you for the warm welcome. I was wondring what would happen and what problems might occur if you used salt water in a nuclear reactor aside from salt building up in the reactor core, any problematic reactions that might occur? Thanks Oli

regarding the postulates of the kinetic theory, in each book or page that are different, that is, in more and less sites... even in some cases with contradictory redactions, and hence my doubt... in one place I read a postulate: - There are no intermolecular forces except during the collision between molecules and yet in another place this appears as a postulate: Collisions between two molecules do not exert unattractive or repulsive forces... this is not contradictory...? are there or are there not intramolecular forces during the collision, according to the postulates of kinetic theory.????

I was wondering what gas I should use on one of my projects. It needs to be denser than air, somewhat flammable, non toxic to humans in small amounts and preferably easy to see, like chlorine or bromine (But neither of these work, as they are less dense than air). I got this idea from a game character Scorch from Titanfall 2. He is able to shoot/launch out a gas canister and the ignite them, and I would like to do something like that. The gas can't be too expensive or hard to find.

Hi forum, I saw something mysterious today. The person spread some cardamons on a white paper. The cardamoms were seal packed from the shop. Then transferred them into an empty jar. I took a mouthful of fresh tap water and kept in the mouth for a minute or 2. Then spit all of it in the jar, immediately closed the lid of the jar and shaked it. This caused a combustion in the jar. I am perplexed. The only thing from the person was the white paper on which the cardamons were spread. Rest of the items were mine. I am really perplexed. Could there be something on the paper that stuck to the cardamoms, then due to the water being warm in my mouth, it combusted? Really loo…

  19. I'd appreciate help on how to prepare chemical solutions (with distilled water) at specific ppm In this case, I need to make two different solutions, each with a different chemical, but I need them to be the same ppm 1. Sodium hypochlorite ("Bleach") I am starting with an existing solution with 7.86% available NaOCl 2. Sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) - I don’t have any yet and am not sure the best source. I need both to be a 5000 ppm solution in distilled water. The 5000 ppm should be "available chlorine" Questions: Can 7.86% bleach solution be used in the calculations to figure out how to get 5000 ppm, or do I need some other data about th…

Hi, I was cleaning some of my rusty tools by bathing them in vinager. It was a pretty slow clean as I'm used to leaving it for 2 - 3 days but when I returned I had an unusual reaction which I'm hoping you can tell me what happened? It's got a very unique aroma of copper grease but this wouldn't had corroded the sockets. I think the black cake is copper oxide but what about the red and orange? Any help greatly appreciated.

  23. I work in a volatile organic compound lab (environmental analysis). Today while preparing a solution I accidentally wound up flicking a small drop of a chemical mix into my eye. I was flicking a 100 ul syringe containing 25 ul of a "super mix" of 70+ common volatile organic compounds (toluene, benzene, chloromethane, chloroform...etc) at a concentration of 20 ug/ml, or 20 ppm, or .002%. Somehow after flicking the syringe a drop of no more than .01-0.05 ml found it's way under my safety glasses and into my eye. Within a minute I flushed my eye for a few minutes and noticed only slight irritation; which might have just been from the water flush. What I'm worried about is…
