We only ever use our pool in summer, so its sort of a waste (of time and money) to put in chlorine during other times, but then algae will start growing along the edges and that's difficult to get rid of with just chlorine. So I've had this idea, is there some sort of fish that will eat the algae growing on the side of my pool, and better yet some of the free-floating algae? I'd like to restrict it to fish since insects will multiply (although I have plenty of them anyway) and die and amphibians could run away. Ideally they should be self-sufficient and not require much feeding (anything over once a month is fine by me). Oh and bonus points if you can think o…

Just confirmation: Mitosis consists of four steps Prophase - Where DNA's getting packed Metaphase - Where DNA's beginning to cluster in the center Anaphase - Where cells start the separation. Telephase - Where cell is completely divided into two cells, each with one complete set of DNA. And there is this Interphase, where it is between Telephase and Prophase, where normal cell function occurs and DNA is replicated. Also, X-shaped (even Y-shaped) are made up of two identical parts called chromatids. Each chromatid is a complete set of DNA. In the center is that circly thing called Centromere that joins two. On that Centromere is those spikes cal…

Can anyone correct me if im wrong? This is basic basic basic basic basic basic biology, and i am just trying to refresh my memory and make sure that i am stating the correct facts 1) General concepts about tonicity ---- Lets say for example, we have a red blood cell exposed to solutions of different tonicity (hypo, iso, hyper) If the red blood cell was hypotonic to the solution, then the red's blood cell volume will increase, and ultimatey lysing the cell. If the red blood cell was iso to the solution, it will make no differenfce If the red blood cell was hyper to the solution, the cell would shrivel as water will leave the cell and thus losing volume i…

I didn't know exactly where to put this thread but thought Biology may be most appropriate. Here is the is the article I read on it. This is really a sad day for science, I was stunned when I read the news (although he definitely lived a full life) Evolutionary Biologist Ernst Mayr Dies http://news.yahoo.com/newstmpl=story&u=/ap/20050204/ap_on_re_us/obit_mayr_1 CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Ernst Mayr, one of the world's leading evolutionary biologists, has died at 100. The longtime Harvard University faculty member died Thursday at a retirement community in Bedford. His work in the 1930s and '40s, while a curator at the American Museum …

Does anyone have experience with a GC/MS system? I am looking to measure soil respiration activity within enclosed chambers and measure oxygen consumption within the headspace. Has anyone used this system to measure CO2 and O2 using the selective ion technique? (M/Z 32 and 44 i think) any help would be greatly appreciated!

which of the following will most likely be disrupted by a change in pH? 1) hydrogen bonding 2) ionic bonding 3) hydrophobic interactions 4) disulfide bonds 5) neither -I'm pretty sure its not 1) and 2) since changing the pH won't affect the electronegativity of an atom...Pretty sure that its not disulfide bonds either, so from that im guessing that its hydrophobic interactions..am i right? or is my concept wrong? A nucleotide containing a purine, ribose, and a phosphate group could be a building block for? a) dna b) mRna c) tRna d) rRna e) b,c,d -Ok it is NOT A for sure, so im assuming that a nucleotide contaning a purine, ribose, and phosphate…

Hi, Im new here, and I just started to learn about atoms structure. Just wanted to expand my knowledged and understand more about biology and others.. hope this is not a dumb question, if it is, im new....hee So how did scientists or chemists were able to find out the exact number of electrons/protons/neutrons in an atom? since we can't see what an atom look like, how and what type of tools did they use to figure out these stuff? And I don't understand why is the electron are lighter than both proton/neutrons? Since both neutron and proton are the same size, right, should the electron be the same size?

Every the stickkler for efficiency I was wondering; Would it not be more efficient to have a cooler body temp, slowing things down, but evelotunarily speaking it would mean that there would be less energy wasted creating heat.

Say a patient in a hospital was getting some blood put in her and her chart said she was type B. A donor was taken which was labeled type B, but just for safety they took a sample of both blood and mixed them, Agglutination occured. Now how could you find out which label is wrong considering you have type A, type O and type AB blood at your disposal but no Type B. Would type B be a control variable in this sort of expirement or...is there even a control. Thx alot

Hi, I wasn't sure where this goes. Someone sneezes around christmas trees. It's is worse as the tree gets older. (I am assuming that this is a tree that is cut and set up at home.) Is there something about the tree that changes as time passes that woud cause the sneezing to be worse? Mold? Dost? Fragrance put out? I really don't know. Please help me. Thank you.
