Ok, I'm no meteorologist but I know that the weather on the west coast is influenced by the temperature of the pacific ocean. I'm curious, could the Tsunami have displaced enough warm water into or drawn enough water out of the Pacific to temporarily change the weather pattern? I know that we're talking about a butt load of water in the pacific, but hey thought I'd ask.

Please see the above thread. By many accounts, science misinformation is firmly entrenched on twitter, which is where I, personally, get much of my science news. The odd part is that some of these lies seem more lazy than malicious. Why pretend that kinesin is endorphin... this will not gain you any social or political advantage. It's not clear that it will even result in more retweets.

Hi. The first; what size of a mylar mirror "umbrella" held by a reasonably far positionable satellite could produce a ~500 Km Ø shadow on earth? And the other; would such shade cool the sea surface a few degrees if projected several days on a path, enough to somewhat decrease the intensity of a hurricane ? Miguel

According to many sources, the ultimate compression strength of human femurs along its long axis (vertically) is 205 mpa or 29700 psi. I tried to convert 205 mpa to kg/cm² and the result is 205 mpa is equal to 2090.41824 kg/cm². So, I think the maximum weight that a human femur can support vertically before breaking is 2 tonnes. Isn't it? But with different method of calculation, I got a drastically different answer. The maximum diameter of human femurs is 3 cm and some exceeded 3 cm by 5 mm or more especially in weightlifters. So I followed this calculation from https://openoregon.pressbooks.pub/bodyphysics/chapter/stress-and-strain-on-the-body/. First we divide the…

Just recently my dog has been acting strangely and i discovered that it was the smoke alarm that was upsetting her. Sometimes i hear the smoke alarm making all sorts of strange tones. I think that the smokealarm is making a tone that is above humans hearing range but not that of a dogs. I have tested my hearing and i can hear up to 18khz only just. I tried replacing the battery of the alarm but it still upsets my dog. So clearly the smokealarm is stuffed but i want to figure out whats making my dog all mental. Does anyone know how i can make a microphone that will be able to pick up 18khz and above tones? Is it possible to use this microphone with my computer sou…

Unbelievably Strong Glass - New Revolution in making thin Glass This is a new type of glass which will be manufactured in the future. It will replace ordinary glass in the near future. It will also be used by mobile phone manufacturers. This type of glass is the strongest glass in the world. It is ten times stronger than ordinary glass. It is resistant to scratching and hard impacts, which is presented in the test. In the test, we will use two steel balls and two glasses for shattering. The first glass is made of the new type of glass, while the second one is made of ordinary glass that is currently used.

(Reuters) - Switzerland hopes to restart talks with the U.S. over a long-simmering tax dispute following the re-election of president Obama, its economy minister was quoted as saying on Sunday. Switzerland is trying to reach a deal to end investigations by U.S. tax authorities into 11 banks, including Credit Suisse (CSGN.VX) and Julius Baer (BAER.VX), suspected of helping clients dodge U.S. taxes with the help of offshore bank accounts. It needs the tax deal so that it can normalise its banking relations with the United States and wants the investigations dropped in return for the payment of hefty fines by the Swiss banks and the transfer of names of thousands of U.S. cli…

Been thinking recently ( a few years now ) and now want to bounce a few ideas, so please be as ruthless as possible. Current thinking that im aware of is that the universe is going to continue to expand and is in fact speeding up. This raises the question as to how exactly how they are measuring the rate of expansion and is it possible that they are missreading the information, could it be infact that the point nearer to the centre of the universe is slowing at a greater rate then the object at the outer edge of the universe giving the illusion that the expansion is speeding up? or that there is a continuing expansion at all? Another way of looking at what might be …

Hey, I'm sure most of everyone here has heard of the Big Bang theory, and that the universe is expanding, etc. etc. But has anyone heard of the opposed theory, that the universe started out big and is imploding? I heard this for the first time a couple days ago and it took me by surprise. I didn't think any of it made a lot of logical sense at first. Then I kept looking around and found little snippets of info about how the red shift makes it seem like the universe is expanding when all it really indicates is that galaxies are moving away from us. Thus, it could be inferred in this theory that objects closer to the 'center' of the universe are falling into it faster than…

Hey... Well tonight I distilled some water by boiling it for a few minutes. I had 4 D sized batteries hooked together to form a battery pack. I then had 2 stainless steel screws, hooked to wires, which were hooked to the battery terminals. I was trying to separate the water into hydrogen and oxygen, not sure why though. Well, I read online somewhere that salt makes water conduct electricity better, some I threw in about 5 tablespoons of salt. (yes that is A LOT) Then, I plopped the screws in the water. The positive side bubbled fast (oxygen) and the negative slow (hydrogen). I had a glue stick cap at the top of the hydrogen screw because that is what I wanted to collect.…

Unlocking Infinite Possibilities: The Quantum Simulation Initiative (QSI) Overview The Quantum Simulation Initiative (QSI) aims to bridge the gap between theoretical physics, quantum computing, and real-world problem-solving through simulation. By leveraging quantum computers and cutting-edge AI, we will tackle humanity’s most pressing questions—from climate change to the structure of matter, and far beyond. Why is this project crucial? Because suffering and misfortune should not be the norm, and money should not be the only way to access resources and power. QSI is a step toward a society where technology empowers rather than divides. Key Object…

How much do the basic assumptions and beliefs of the modellers effect the models? Firstly may I make it clear that while this thought occurred while considering General Climate Models and AGW this is not meant as an attack on any or all GCMs. Secondly it is not about AGW or GW at all, but about the methods used to construct models in general. I know bugger all about how they're made so I thought I'd ask the question. Background. (Please note that this refers to natural forcings only) While reading various articles and papers on GW it became obvious that there has been a gradual shift in the perspective of Climatologists from the Gradualist to the (Semi) Catacl…

I have performed a binding experiment using a biotynilated molecule ranging from high to low concentration. The molecule exhibits 100% binding at low concentration (as expected) then gradually drops off. The drop -off is more extreme at higher concentrations. If the beads become saturated past a certain concentration shouldnt the curve drop off quicker and at a steady rate? (it should be noted that the % captured is measured by fluorescence) Binding curve is below. The beads are GE's Sepharose Mag beads cat # 28-9857-38 Thanks!

by a strange train of events i have aquired two biological duck units. The small one we believe is female, they aren't that old yet though. The female is malfunctioning and somehow losing wing feathers. We are not sure if it is natural, or if one or the other of the ducks is doing it. The feathers are being stripped down to their shafts--- any idea what is going on and what to do about it?

Hello all! ? If urine were passed through a medium...a filter of some sort....would it produce filtered urine? would the urine still be conciderd urine? I want to find out if urine can be voided through a filter and cleaned of toxins or markers that could be used as information for a case of genetic discrimination against the person making pee pee in the cup.

Hello, Some time ago I saw a program about the composition of the universe (dark energy, dark matter etc.). The program showed an interview with a scientist who represented a group of scientists who studied the composition of the universe and the expansion of matter from a central point(big bang theory). They made a computer simulation that showed the expansion of matter as small points of light. They did this to show that the unknown force known as dark energy was needed for the existence of a stable universe. The simulation simply showed matter as tiny points, but what if we wanted to make a simulation that showed all the complex interactions of atoms and m…
