If you have any interesting facts on science post them here! Here are some of my facts: You burn more calories eating celery than celery has in it. People that smoke a pack of cigarettes every day puts a halfcup of tar in his or her's lungs each year. I'll post more later.

This thread has been started after a comment SkepticLance rightly made in the Limit to Growth thread. Basically he felt that he was being asked for sources disproportionately more frequently than other members, and that other people do not cite references as often as he is asked to provide them. While I personally think that's a monster Lance creates for himself, you can't ignore the fact that we don't use references anywhere near as one would expect on a forum like this. Certainly we ask for them much more than we provide them without being asked ourselves. Do we do it often enough? Do we rely too much on poor sources? Do we invoke higher standards for oth…

I recently read a very good book called "The Web of Belief" by W.V. Quine and J.S. Ullian. Its basically a compact introduction to rational belief and an entry point to areas of philosophy, methodology of science, and philosophy of language. Here are some excerpts from the section on the virtues of a hypothesis. I thought it would be beneficial to any aspiring scientist. There are five in all, but I don't have time to type them all up atm, so here are the first three. I will finish them up tomorrow. Virtue I: conservatism: In order to explain the happenings that we are inventing it [hypothesis] to explain, the hypothesis may have to conflict with some of our pr…

(A collection of some thoughts brought on by recent posts and posters. Some of these are touched upon in the FAQ and Pseudoscience section, and these sentiments can be found on other science fora) If you think you've toppled relativity, quantum mechanics, evolution or some other theory with your post, think again. Theories that have been around for a while have lots of evidence to back them up. It is far more likely that you have missed something. Here are some things to consider: 1. You have to back your statements up with evidence. 2. Anecdotes are not evidence. 3. Being challenged to present evidence is not a personal attack. 4. Calling the people…

SamCogar mentioned above... ... to which Phi for All responded... I'll probably not win any friends by saying this, but I'd say Sam is, on this point at least, largely right, and Phi largely wrong -- with no disrespect intended to any of our members. Phi's sentiments reflect a vaguely Popperian view of science, one that is often repeated by scientists who, in many cases, quite understandably due to other commitments, are unable (or even unwilling) to keep abreast of developments in the history and philosophy of science. Popper's view goes something like this: Science can be described as a process of "critical rationalism" or "conjectures a…

Hi. Many surveillance and phone and other cameras can be made to see infrared by removing their IR blocking filter in the lens. Is sensitivity to thermal included when the filter is removed; or the sensor works only to a near-IR and thermal sensing is not 'near' ? What is a thermal camera spectrum ? ~12um ? Is any common canibalizable camera sensor that can be used for 'toy grade' thermal imaging ? If you want, jump to time stamp 1:10 at --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YEvkOVCaNI

I have a linear power supply build that is a variable voltage supply. The circuit I need is for the ripple left over after the filter capacitors. The supply uses power transistors as the output which are controlled through the base voltage with a variable resistor. I want to hook up another transistor to invert the ripple. If I sample the ripple as a control on the base and get the inverted voltage output on it's collector resistor and use an isolation capacitor to the base of the power transistor it will work. The down side is that the ripple will show up varying through the range of voltages and it will be about 43 degrees advance out of phase. So my question is how can…

Subject: Effective Performance Indicators for Digital Transformation in Production? Post Type: Question (1) I was wondering how to best measure the success of new digital tools in a consumer goods production process. (2) I don't mean just traditional metrics like output speed, but truly effective indicators for employee adaptation and process flexibility. (3) In other words, what are the most relevant performance indicators for a successful digital transformation? Any help here would be appreciated.

The research topic is "Models for evaluating the effectiveness of the organization of production of small and medium-sized enterprises in the industrial sector." I would be very grateful for any help, for example, in choosing the optimal model, using the methodology for forming integrated performance indicators (safety, ecology, quality), etc. Does anyone know what "efficiency" is, not from an economic point of view? I would be interested in how lean manufacturing methods (tools) are implemented and applied in a real industrial enterprise, in particular: rapid changeover (SMEO), universal equipment maintenance (TPM). Thank you in advance.

Good day. Under what term can I find studies/suggestions of which percentages of a daily (or monthly) income is supposed to be enough for expenses of food, fuel, electricity, car payment, insurance, entertainment, housing, medicines, savings, clothing... all the costs of daily living for a 'normal' ideal life (no luxury, no hardship) ? Example: A 'normal' income budget should keep up with housing cost under 30% , car payment under 10%, electric bill under 8%, food under 6% , savings ideally over 10%, insurance under 4%, and so on. Any suggestions how to/where to look ?

Hello. What determines how a plant recognizes the altitude in which it is supposed to grow better or not ? Is it the oxygen content, the temperature, the barometric pressure ? Escapes to mind how/why a plant can grow better (or only at) the Andes and not at a location with similar environment.

Sometimes, we forget that science is not only in labs and textbooks it’s all around us. From the way soap cleans our hands to how plants turn sunlight into energy, tiny scientific principles are shaping our daily lives. What’s one simple science fact that recently amazed you in your everyday routine?

Why infants and children died at a horrific rate in the Middle Ages? Quote For starters, infants and children died at a horrific rate (some say up to 1/3 of all died before the age of 5) Quote https://www.sarahwoodbury.com/life-expectancy-in-the-middle-ages/ Why did infants and children died at a horrific rate in the Middle Ages? Most people only lived to mid 40s. What happen in the Middle Ages people died so early? Was there just more bacterial and virus back in that time?

Recently I debated Buddhists and Hindus about certain metaphysical beliefs of theirs. I have great respect for both religions and their self-cultivation methods, I just disagree with the supernatural stuff. Their key argument was that my skepticism is meaningless because science was wrong before and when the germ theory was created, scientists initially rejected it (which is largely true). How would you guys counter it? Those two discussiosn were the first time I've debated religionists for over a decade.

Hello Ken. An interesting research paper came out several days ago. I've been really soaking my brain in it today. Much to think about. I did post it here because it touches a multiple of different disciplines. Please move it if it is in the wrong place. I try to flash out an idea I had recently to combat climate change. I did put it into a presentation you can access under url deleted I am going to break down every relevant page in this post with the science behind. I would like you to point out my errors, chip in your thoughts and maybe give me a nudge in how to promote my idea the best, if it is an idea worth promoting. The 1 million will be explained later. The villages should house around 100 paid workers (they are planned more spacious to accommodate their families as well). Most of them are mean…

I have been searching for the past few days about whether mathematics is called the mother of science. I often end up debating with people, especially those from a physics background, who argue that physics is the real mother of science. This has left me quite confused and I would really like to know which one is more accurate. I would appreciate your opinions on this from a scientific perspective. It would be even more helpful if each of you could explain with an example. Thank you in advance.

When an entity under consideration possesses multiple, perhaps many, characteristics we need to consider the situation that arises for entities that only possess some of those characteristics. Just to be clear, I am using the word characteristic in its common or garden meaning of quality or property or similar, not in the specialised mathematical meaning to to with the wave equation. Equally I am using duality in a broader sense than just in the wave/particle apparent dichotomy, as it applies to all sciences, not just light. I am of the opinion that the so called wave/particle duality issue has been 'blown up (inflated) out of all proportion', being seized upon by the me…

IMG_2890.mov Object appeared just after 2230 eastern, slowly moving to the north Photo is a 2 or 3 sec exposure so the object is blurred. Video shows the object better but you don’t get the background. (edit: some the stars visible in the picture are: big dipper to the right, Arcturus is on the left, peeking out behind a tree) From social media, the likely explanation is that it’s stage 2 of an Ariane rocket that launched last night, venting, and would soon burn up on re-entry (which would have been neat to see) So now it’s a probably-identified object/aerial phenomenon

Progesterone receptor membrane component 1promotes survival of human breast cancer cells and the growth of xenograft tumors- Scytek Laboratories. Triple negative breast cancers (TNBCs) are highly aggressive and grow in response to sex steroid hormones despite lacking expression of the classical estrogen (E2) and progesterone (P4) receptors. Since P4 receptor membrane component 1 (PGRMC1) is expressed in breast cancer tumors and is known to mediate P4-induced cell survival, Breast cancer is diagnosed in over 230,000 women annually in the United States
