Hello folks, I was hoping I could get some advice on the best degree selection for working with micro and macro algae cultivation and utilization. I am interested in all of their uses, but especially bioenergy and biofuels, as well as bioplastics and fertilizers. Here is the supply chain that I am imagining: open ocean seaweed production > biorefinery > energy, fuel, fertilizer > co2 emissions used in algae production > back to biorefinery > bioplastics This is not the most ideal medium to elaborate these ideas, but I hope you can get the picture. Basically, my overall goal is to create systems of manufacturing that can sequester carbon and provide lo…

Hi, I'm a highschool student who is going to complete his IGCSE this year. I'm interested in studying wildlife and I aspire to be a park ranger or a naturalist. I enjoy ecology, conservation and the outdoors and I want to specialise in them. However, I am unsure on what to study for my tetiary education. The universities and colleges I have surveyed do not have a course on ecology or wildlife science (most of the time it's medical) At most that they have is general biology, environmental management/science, zoology and aquatic science. Is it the case that I have to go through one of these courses to study ecology and conservation? Or do I have to search for …

Hi! I'm new the aspect of university and my future in almost every possible sense, as I'm going into my First year in Electrical Engineering. Throughout my life I have always held a love and fascination for space and the universe and only recently discovered astrophysics as a possible career choice; however, as I previously stated, I am already going into Electrical Engineering. Since both subjects (Astrophysics and Engineering) carry an immense reliance on physics i wasn't sure if I should rethink my schooling and opt for a degree in Physics then proceed Astrophysics, or keep my degree in Electrical Engineering as a sort of safety net and area for experience and use…

How well do you know the contributions of these famous female scientist: Marie Curie (1867-1934) Lisa Mietner (1878-1968) Barbara McClintock (1902-1992) Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958) Jane Goodall (1934-Present) Well, if you don't, here's a Life Noggin YouTube video I recently discovered recounting some of their contributions. I knew a great deal about Madame Curie and Jane Goodall, but not so much about the other three extraordinary women. Enjoy!

  6. I'll be graduating next year with my AS in computer science. I consider this an indictment rather than an achievement. I don't really want the degree itself. What should I do with it? Can I throw it away. I'd like to just tell the college I don't want it and not to give it to me. I won't need it will I? Can I just throw it away?

If anyone has good teaching experience and is willing to spare the time, do you think you could provide me some basic informal tutoring? Though, seeing as that's possibly very unlikely, do you think you could at least point me towards the right questions to practice from the 50-70 questions a college textbook provides. It takes forever to get through all those and many are too easy, but not discernible to the untrained eye from a difficult question. I am currently using Principles of Physics which is an international version of Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday Resnick and Walker. I would be grateful even for minimum guidance.

G’day Science forums Could anyone give me some advice on structuring a hypothesis? I’ve designed an algorithm to extract a 3D representation of the branching structure of each tree in a plot of trees from remotely sensed data. The idea I’m testing is that there is a correlation between a measure of volume based on this derived structure for each tree (imaginatively called ‘derived tree volume’) and the volume measured by destructive field sampling (actual tree volume). So far I’ve got “It is the contention of this study that these regression analyses yield a relationship between the variables derived from this representative framework and the standing timb…

Hi, Currently I am a second year studying to get my BSc in Chemistry. I have a huge interest in chemistry but in terms of my career I've discovered that I am really interested in psychology or neuroscience. I have a massive interest in not only the brain and how it functions but also the mind and how it works. Things like mental health and addiction interest me a lot and I would love to be able to help people. Im not entirely sure what I would like to do but I'm hoping there is something out there that could perhaps wrap my interests into one. What kind of careers do you think are available? and also is it possible to do anything like that with a chemistry degree? W…

  11. So as the tittle says i am a 16 year old student from Greece,i love physics as much as i love maths ..Most of my relatives are doctors, surgeons, dentists etc and they urge me in a way of becoming a doctor aswell but i really like physics and here comes the question , should i follow what i love and create my own path or follow their advice and do something that isnt my first option but will bring me a good income instead? In this point i want to say that here in Greece physics is dead since we lack of industry or research section and i ll have to move abroad to find a job. I would also like to mention that i am doing good in all science subjects .

  12. Greetings, I'm really interested in pursuing graduate work in astrobiology. The area I'm most interested in is the search for life in the subsurface oceans of Europa and similar bodies. I still need to complete my bachelor's, and I'm wondering what subfield of biology would be most beneficial to major in. The school I'm interested in, University of Washington, offers general biology, ecology/evolution/conservation, molecular/cellular/developmental, physiology and plant biology as majors, with marine biology and paleobiology offered as minors. I'm thinking that whichever field would expose me the most to extremophiles would be logical. Thanks for responses

  13. Hello, everyone. I'm new to the forum, but browsing through the subforums and threads, this seems like an excellent community in which to discuss and learn a broad range of scientific subjects. I am a writer who is developing a fictional novel, and while the science must of necessity serve the story, rather than the other way around, I would nevertheless like to ground the story in at least plausible modern science. What I am wondering is if it is ok to ask a few specific questions here for help in developing this aspect of the novel? Or would the community prefer to keep the discussion on the track of academic discussion and education? Thanks! Jason Zyla

This question will essentially be more of a how-to plea or general help request. I'm currently studying math and I'm at the point where I've transitioned into upper-division classes, most if not all of which are proof based. To be blunt, I currently feel discouraged at the prospect of being able to succeed in "upper-level" classes. Last quarter I was able to get decent grades in my classes, but nothing like the success I enjoyed in lower-level math. My discouragement stems from the fact that in the past if I studied I did well. Now I feel as if I'm studying and not doing well at all. Obviously this is a reflection of either my study methods or frequency …

  16. I see this forum is pretty dead with only about 1 post every thread it appears. But I'm going to try. Just so you understand up front, I'm not a youngster just coming out of high school. I'm 25 years old and a college flunk-out. I used to care two damns less about education. I was a terrible student in high school and barely graduated with my 1.7 GPA. I never looked into college while in high school because I didn't think any of them would accept me so I just never planned on going to college. The summer after high school my parents demanded that i apply for college, so I did at the last minute. Some crappy local four year university conditionally admitted me. I spent…

  17. In this video I make an approach to what is entropy and the second law of thermodynamics. You might think that entropy is just an abstract concept born from math and without any physical meaning, but in reality is something quite simple to grasp that has a big role in our mundane lifes. Entropy is the reason we can't make perpetual machines, entropy is the origin of all inefficiencies and mother to all wastes. link removed per rule 2.7

  18. Hey everyone. As the title suggests, I have recently received a unique opportunity to participate in summer research at any reputable institution within the United States and it's territories. While I initially believed this to be an easy choice to make, I am beginning to find it difficult to decide on where to go. While I would like to keep the exact specifics of the program unknown, I can share that the research would be within the field of biomedical research. I realize that this is an incredibly broad field and that one person's experience somewhere could be radically different from another's who went to the same school. The reason I am posting this is to attempt …

So, as some of you may know I recently started as junior faculty and am building a lab. I have had great experience integrating undergraduates into my research group in the past, however at my new institution, I have been informed that I can either offer my undergrads money as compensation OR credits graded at my discretion (previously I would give both) I need to decide which form of compensation I will offer before advertising (which I also have to do as a procedural requirement). Although I can switch between the two at the change of semester. I generally like to get in people at the freshman or sophomore level, so I can have them around for as long as possible. I…

  20. In regards to writing the introduction of science research papers, what exactly is written in the space after one finishes defining the gap in research and before the specific aims and methodologies of the current paper is stated? I'm guessing it would be some sort of overarching thesis statement. Would this thesis statement summarize the research gap, or propose new research/novel solution or address the overall objectives/purpose of the paper? The problem is that from all the papers I've read I can't abstract out any reliable or rational way of setting up the thesis statement and understanding what it is.

Since this topic comes up from time to time, here's a link to a good blog post How to publish your first scientific paper Lots of good advice, starting with avoiding predatory publishers by checking Beall's list. Also the getting feedback part, which is sort of where we might come in for a neophyte. If we object, then you can be pretty sure a thorough peer-review is going to be problematic. There are links to other helpful tidbits, like how to structure the paper

  23. So I'll try my best to unpack my story as concisely as possible so I can get on to my question..... Previously I was a vastly ignorant person with largely no regard for education. I'm speaking here of the no-so-distant past. From childhood well into young adulthood I was very lost intellectually and academically. Therefore, I'm sure you can imagine that my academic history is very botched and atrocious. You would be imagining correctly. All throughout grade school, high school, and in my first college attempt, I hated school work, and had absolutely no regard for the importance of education. I never invested myself in my school work and I barely squeaked by high schoo…

  25. Hi, I am a junior in high school, and I'm super indecisive about what specific degree I want to pursue in college. I believe I'm a decent student, I got a 29 on my ACT, but I expect a higher score as I am going to retake it a couple of more times in the future, and to this day, I have an unweighted 3.7 GPA. I also will be graduating with around 8 AP credits. (Only sharing this to get a very personalized answer! ) I want to know what colleges with environmental programs will be best for me, but I have little knowledge of what route to take. I've been looking at Humbolt State in CA for this type of degree, but it is far from home- I am wondering if that would be a good pla…
